The Orthodox Church in Uganda is mourning the passing on of their bishop, Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga this evening.
He was 76 years
Bishop Lwanga has been the head of the Orthodox Church in Uganda and has been a very active member of the Christian faith as the Joint Christian Council.
The Orthodox Church has over 60,00 believers in Uganda and it dates back to 1930s, It is situated on Namungona hill South of Kampala.
Bishop Lwanga was born on July 18 July 1945 at Ddegeya village and his grandfather Obadiah Basajjakitalo was one of the two initial leaders of the Orthodox Church in Uganda along with Ruben Spartas Mukasa.
He completed his education in Bulemezi and Kyadondo between 1952-1964. In 1964-1968 he studied at the Ecclesiastical School of Crete. In 1968-1978 he holds a degree in Theology and Philosophy from the University of Athens
In 1979−1981 he served Secretary of the Orthodox Mission in Uganda.
1 May 1981 he was ordained a Deacon, in 1982 he was ordained a priest.
On January 27, 1992 he was ordained vicar Bishop of Bukoba
On May 12, 1997 he was elected by the Holy Synod as Metropolitan of Kampala and All Uganda.
