The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, has eulogised the fallen Dokolo District Woman, MP Cecilia Ogwal describing her as a spiritual legislator.
The legislator, who has been a member of Uganda’s legislature continuously since 1996, died of a cancer-related illness at an unrevealed hospital in India, where she had been evacuated for specialised medical care.
Bishop Onesimus, who ministered at the funeral service of the late Cecilia Ogwal at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero, said the deceased was a spiritual legislator who prepared for eternal rest even when she was still alive.
“She was a very strong voice for the voiceless and marginalized girl child. Cecilia was a great legislator; she was eloquent, and whenever she took to the floor of Parliament, she ably articulated the needs of her constituency,” Rev. Asiimwe said.
Rev. Asiimwe said the late Ogwal had rare boldness and yet remained a humble and submissive wife and mother. Having all this in one person is a gift from God. In short, Cecilia has gone too soon.
Lameck Ogwal, the husband of the late Cecilia Ogwal, described his wife as a great woman and mother who never entertained any spirit of disobedience.
“At one time, while she (Cecilia) was at Parliament, she asked the Speaker to close debate because it was past 7pm and she needed to go and feed her husband. She was not only a good wife but a great mother,” he said.
She represented Lira Municipality from 1996 to 2006 and later represented Dokolo District from August 2006 until her death. The deceased also represented Uganda at the Pan-African Parliament in the 9th Parliament (2011–2016).
She will be laid to rest on Saturday in Kole District.
