Bobi Wine: MPs’ greed has pushed me to join politics

Whereas Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has recently been very critical against the government, few expected him to join mainstream politics; the ‘Ghetto president’ is eyeing the Kyadondo East seat which was declared vacant last week.

Speaking to the press, Bobi Wine says the zeal to help other people has influenced him to join politics “because the previous MPs have been a huge disappointment.”

“When I had just come to Magere, Sitenda Ssebalu convinced us to send him to Parliament, promising to bring about a change in the livelihoods of the people of Kyadondo East. We believed him and sent him to parliament but on getting there, he appear to have worked for only his family and not the electorates that sent him,” he said  Wednesday while appearing on Delta TV.

Bobi Wine added: “When the term ended, we threw him out and replaced him with another person (Apollo Kantinti) who had successfully convinced us that he was different from the previous MP. Shockingly, after swearing in as MPs, we heard that our MPs had asked for salary increment. Before we could get over this, our MPs were asking for Shs200 million to buy themselves cars. Then came the demand for more allowances. Against all this, I can’t trust anyone else. I’ve come to realise we have eaters and not leaders. Their mouths are for eating only and not speaking for people they represent.”

Asked as whether it’s not the hefty benefits of MPs that has attracted him to join the race for parliament, Bobi Wine said: “I am not a politician. I am a leader. I want to see a change in my area and country otherwise I can make an MP’s earning in just one music show”.

According to the self-styled ‘Omubanda Wa Kabaka’ he has been a resident of Magere, Wakiso District for 15 years, and has done a lot to change the place.

“In this period, I personally took electricity to Magere as I connected power to my home. I feel saddened whenever I look at the livelihood of the people in my neighbourhood,” Bobi Wine said, adding that he and his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi have a big passion of bringing change to other people’s lives.

CHARITABLE COUPLE: Bobi Wine and wife Barbie give out matresses and blankets to residents of Sowe islands

Barbie Kyagulanyi runs a charity organization, Caring Hearts, an NGO that has been giving free medicare to women and kids especially the disabled.
Early this year, the couple gave out free Medicare and over 500 mattresses and blankets to people on the Island of Sowe Island among other areas.

The couple was awarded in the previous years by Rotary International for their big hearts for the needy.

Many an MP, especially those formerly from the entertainment industry, are on verge of exiting Parliament over lack of the required academic documents. MPs like Peter Ssematimba, formerly a break dancer and radio presenter together with comedian Kato Lubwama, have been in and out of court over their academic documents.

But speaking about his education, Bobi Wine said he completed his secondary studies at Kitante Hill School for Ordinary Level and Advanced Level in 1998 at Kololo Secondary School after which he joined Makerere University.

“Glad all the schools I attended are still in existence. At least none was razed down by an investor…..you can go to these schools and confirm for yourself. Surprising to many, I always came first in my class through my life at School.”

He also used the opportunity to speak out on his political background, revealing that on joining Makerere, the first course he undertook had something to do with politics.
“I first undertook Social Sciences and Political Science but I later changed to Music, Dance and Drama because I couldn’t afford the first course,” Bobi Wine said.
In Kenya, singer Jaguar is among the candidates contesting for seats in Parliament while in Tanzania, rapper Prof Jay is already an MP.

Lawyers move to block Kayihura’s re-appointment as police boss

Cit Lawyer Andrew Karamagi kisses Makerere Researcher and Activist Dr. Stella Nyanzi at court following a hearing.

Two city lawyers have written to the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga asking her to halt the re-appointment of the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura before approving his new contract.

In a letter to Kadaga issued yesterday, lawyers Brian Atuhaire and Andrew Karamagi also asked Kadaga to cause an investigation against General Kayihura, accusing him of among other things violation of human rights and participating in partisan politics.

REAPPOINTED: IGP General Kale Kayihura

“As citizens in both our private and official capacities, we (undersigned)are concerned about the record of Gen Kale Kayihura particularly as it relates to human rights observance, partisan politics and the substitution of institutions with parallel/informal mechanism such as Crime Preventers, the Kiboko Squad and the insurgent Kifeesi,” reads the letter in part.

Further, Atuhaire and Karamagi said the country is still reeling from the shock of Kayihura’s admission that the Uganda Police Force, both at rank-and-file and officer levels, has been infiltrated by criminals who have become abettors of violent crime.

“It did not help matters when at a Press Conference convened by Gen Kayihura himself at which he paraded alleged suspects accused of being part of the panga-wielding gangs that were wrecking terror and havoc in the countryside, one of the suspects confessed that they are protected and transported by police officers to and from their criminal activities. This is catastrophic, to say the least! One would have expected Gen Kayihura’s immediate resignation and prosecution,” their letter states.

It’s against such a background that the two asked the appointments committee not to confirm Kayihura as IGP.

“We hereby submit this careful compilation of human rights violations, partisan conduct of the police force leadership and the use of excessive force with a view to persuading the honourable Appointments Committee, in its wisdom, to halt the confirmation process of Gen Kayihura as Inspector General of Police.”

Kayihura’s name was seconded to Kadaga for reappointment as IGP in a March this year, and awaits vetting by Parliament at a yet to be communicated date.

Gen. Kayihura has been at the helm of police since 2005 when he succeeded current works minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala.

Balaam sets eyes on international events organisation

Artistes perform at the Easter show organised by events promoter Balaam Barugahare.

One cannot talk about Uganda’s entertainment industry without mentioning renowned events organiser, Balaam Barugahare.

Initially an organiser of music shows for local artistes, Balaam recently ‘upgraded’ and started offering services to people like President Yoweri Museveni, whom he provided artistes that performed at his last two campaigns. He also recently started organising shows for international artistes with one such show being Konshens and Busy signal’s last performance in Uganda.

Following all that success in the industry, we are now reliably informed that Balaam is now planning to go international, and has started touring different countries on the continent to explore business ventures. Among the countries he has visited so far include Tanzania and Burundi, while Balaam already has a presence in Southern Sudan.

Meanwhile, Balaam of Balaam Events is also planning on importing new events equipment into the country.

New Nokia 3310 to be released in June

JAPAN - FEBRUARY 15: Launched on the 1st September 2000, the Nokia 3310 featured advanced messaging, personalisation with Xpress-on covers and screensavers, vibra feature, time management functions, voice dialling, picture messaging, predictive text input and games. It also introduced ?mobile chat? using the Nokia Friends-Talk service, which allows users to have conversations using SMS (Short Message Service). This is a globally accepted wireless service that enables the transmission of messages between mobile users and external systems such as e-mail, paging, and voice-mail. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)

The new Nokia 3310’s UK price and release date have been revealed by a retailer.

The legendary handset was relaunched by Nokia at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, though the company was cagey when it came to key release details.

It would only say that the phone was due out during the second quarter of the year, retailing at an “average global” price of €49.

Dorset-based technology retailer Clove has listed the new 3310 for pre-order, and says it’s due to reach customers in mid-June.

That’s in keeping with Nokia’s announcement, and just ahead of Glastonbury Festival, which kicks off on 21 June.

Nokia is marketing it as a second phone for festival-goers and holidaymakers, and will want to use summer events to boost sales.

However, Clove’s pricing is higher than expected. When the new 3310 was first revealed, many assumed it would cost around £40.

Clove, meanwhile, is offering it for £59.99. While still cheap, it’s significantly more than many of us anticipated.

It will be available on the Vodafone and EE mobile networks in the UK, with O2 and Three having no plans to stock the device.

The relaunched 3310 looks similar but more modern than the original, and now comes with a camera, a colour screen and even better battery life.

NO LG 4 INTERNET! DJ Diplo entertaining revellers in Uganda

Celebrated global DJ, Diplo of the Major Lazer group performed in Uganda a week ago before touring other countries on the continent which included Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa.

The crowd that turned up for DJ Diplo’s show in Uganda

His show in Uganda sold out but what Diplo remembers about the country is surprising: Diplo remembers Uganda for its slow internet other than the huge crowd that turned up for his show!

And at the end of his African tour, he took to Twitter to speak out on one thing he had noticed in all the African countries he had been to: their internet was slow save for just one place, Soweto.

Ignore the ads you watch on TV, apparently there is no 4G internet in Uganda!

“How come Soweto has the only LTE in Africa?” he asked.

Fans across the continent couldn’t stop making fun out of the question.
TheConstantine‏ @ConstatoAsirvex:  Must have been rocking so hard in Kenya, you didn’t look at your phone. We have LTE but the problem is our ISP steals your data. #Truestory.

Kathmandupac  🇳🇵‏ @ryantrevors: I mean the technical answer is that it runs on different frequencies but Pretoria had 4G poppin when I was there.

Spin Master!  🏾‏ @DjFreeskie: That is South Africa not the whole of Africa! Nigeria is in Africa and we have LTE bro.

Prince Philip to stand down from all official engagements

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. The Prince has stepped down from all official engagements

The Duke of Edinburgh will no longer carry out royal duties from the autumn of this year, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

According to the Palace, it was the Duke’s decision taken with the support of the Queen.

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, the Duke has the full support of the Queen. Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying the Queen,” the statement read.

It is not thought he will disappear from public life altogether though.

The announcement puts an end to fevered speculation about the welfare of Queen Elizabeth or Philip following reports that an ‘unusual’ meeting had been called at the Palace.

Senior staff from royal residences around the country had been summoned to London today for a meeting at 10am.

The earlier reports, somewhat inevitably, sparked a gathering of the world’s media outside Buckingham Palace.

Philip has generally been in good health in recent years and on Wednesday he opened a new stand at Lord’s cricket ground in central London looking relaxed and lively.

But it appears the Duke has decided that, now in his advanced years, the time has come to step back from royal duties that can involve extensive travel.

His grandson, the Duke of Cambridge, has already announced he will be leaving his job as an air ambulance helicopter pilot to concentrate on his public role, and it is likely he will be further supporting the Queen in her position as head of state now that the Duke has retired from official engagements.

But a royal aide stressed Philip is likely to attend events in the future and will not completely disappear from public life.

The meeting was taken by the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer of the Royal Household, and Sir Christopher Geidt, the Queen’s Private Secretary.

The Queen is expected to continue her appointments as normal.

The frenzied speculation on social media was given added impetus as many pointed out that the apparent meeting was not initially being covered by the BBC or Sky, leading many to suggest a media blackout was in force among the major broadcasters.

The Queen, who celebrated her 91st birthday last month, and Philip, who turns 96 next month, still regularly carry out official duties although they have cut back on their workload in recent years.

Elizabeth met Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday to formally agree to the dissolution of parliament ahead of June’s election while Philip opened a new stand at Lord’s Cricket Ground in central London.

Uganda to host continental insurers’ conference

Delegates who attended the first AIO meeting in Uganda in 1998. Uganda will host this year's AIO conference at Speke Resort, Munyonyo.

Uganda will host the four-day African Insurance Organisation (AIO) conference at the Commonwealth Speke Resort at Munyonyo from May 21-24.

To be held under the theme: ‘Furthering the financial inclusion agenda of African nations through insurance, the conference will bring together over 800 insurance practitioners from all over the continent.

Speaking ahead of the conference, the Chairman AIO Local Organizing Committee Alhaj Ibrahim Kaddunabbi Lubega said the issues to be discussed will drive the uptake of insurance services for both the ordinary Ugandans and the continent.

“Sustainable financial inclusion is only possible with an effective risk management mechanism in place. In the absence of such a mechanism, those included are bound to fall back to the excluded. This conference will therefore provide a platform for the entire continent to discuss insurance, our challenges as well as opportunities for growth. The core of the discussion will be strategizing on and agreeing on plans to ensure the improvement of lives through the products and services that we provide at affordable prices, through appropriate channels that are relevant to our markets,” Kaddunabi said.

The conference is therefore aimed at facilitating the sharing of knowledge and best practice among insurance business leaders and professionals; provide a forum for insures to contribute to the policy debates and issues driving the sector’s growth within the region.

“We expect that His Excellency the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will officially open the conference in the spirit of Pan Africanism and in a show of support that the government has for the industry. We will therefore use the opportunity to show case our developments as well as to dialogue on how governments can partner with our industries to ensure that the general public can continue benefiting from insurance, “added Mr. Deepak Pandey, Chairman of Uganda Insurers Association.

In addition to the above, the conference will also tackle issues to do with achieving sustainable agriculture insurance, developing effective consumer education approaches, accelerating financial inclusion through regulation and driving insurance penetration by developing affordable, need-based products and building appropriate delivery systems.

This will be the second time that Uganda is hosting this continental conference, the first time being in 1998.

Somali works minister killed

KILLED: Abbas Abdullahi, the public works and reconstruction minister

Bodyguards for Somalia’s auditor general shot dead a government minister near the presidential palace, police said.

Capt. Mohamed Hussein said bodyguards escorting Nur Farah opened fire on a car carrying Abbas Abdullahi, the public works and reconstruction minister, near a checkpoint close to the palace.

It is not immediately clear what prompted the shooting. Security concerns are high in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, as the Al Shabaab extremist group continues to target the palace, military facilities and hotels with suicide car bombings and other attacks.

The car carrying the minister approached and trailed the car carrying the auditor general, promoting his bodyguards to open fire, Hussein said. The minister’s bodyguards fired back.

Another minister who was in the car with the deceased minister survived, Hussein said.

Somalia’s new cabinet was sworn in in late March after President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed was elected in February.

The minister who was killed, a former refugee who spent large parts of his life at a camp in Kenay, had been the youngest member of Somalia’s new cabinet.

Somalia’s information minister, Abdirahman Omar Osman, sent condolences over the death, calling Abdullahi a ‘brilliant and rising young star who showed commitment in serving his country’.

The new president has vowed to improve security in this Horn of Africa country, which has seen a quarter-century of chaos.

Meanwhile, al-Shabab has said it will step up its attacks after the president announced a new military offensive against the group, which has used Somalia as a base for attacks in East Africa, in particular neighboring Kenya.

Kiir, Machar forces clash in Upper Nile province

FOUGHT: Members of the South Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA)

South Sudanese rival forces have renewed fighting in and around Guelguk and Mangok in Upper Nile, two senior rebel military officers who asked for anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media said at the rebel headquarters, Pagak.

The fighting, rebels said, began on Tuesday evening and escalated on Wednesday morning. The armed opposition said they had delivered a humiliating defeat to government troops and vowed ‘to spare no life’.

One officer said South Sudan’s government sent a combined force of militiamen and soldiers who he described as ‘people with no clue’.

“The genocidal regime sent its forces to liberate the unliberated land, he asserted.

When pressed to explain what he meant, he simply smiled and added, “People with no clue about what it means when fighting against sons and daughters of Gaatjaak Nuer in Gaatjaak land were brought from Juba to fight against us. So, I think they have been taught a serious lesson.”

A current government official with full knowledge of the fighting said in Juba that South Sudanese government sent troops to the newly-created Maiwut State a few days ago and that the real intention of the deployment is to liberate Guelguk from rebels because of the vast oil reserve there.

“The economic situation is not good now in the country. The government is looking for ways to control Guelguk and other areas around it so that we start oil operation there,” the official revealed.

Sources said government troops first attacked rebel positions on Tuesday evening and that the SPLA-IO Division 5th responded Wednesday morning, resulting in the complete defeat of Juba-backed forces. The second officer asserted, “Our well-trained division annihilated them. Those of them who survived run back to Juadit forest where their base is located…the SPLA-IO is pursuing them.”

Major General Khor Chuol Giet, the 5th Division Commander, urged civilians to be calm and warned that the SPLA-IO will spare no life of anyone who accepts Juba’s order to come to fight the SPLA-IO. He urges government troops to think twice before landing a foot in areas under his control.

“I want them [government soldiers] to think twice before coming to our areas. Don’t come or you will see with your own eyes,” he warned.

Maj. Gen. Giet blasted government forces, saying “they came here to kill their own mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters so they can keep collecting their ration from Kiir.”

For the last few days, there have been heavy movements of the armed opposition troops along Upper Nile main corridors, prompting some civilians to flee their homes. One rebel military intelligence officer claims the SPLA-IO was fully aware of the coming of government troops to Guelguk and Mangok areas.

There was no immediate comment from the office of SPLA-IO Spokesman.
