Singer Ronald Mayinja explains why he joined Nambooze’s ‘Bad DP’

HELD: Singer Ronald Mayinja and 'Bad DP's' Betty Nambooze being led away by police.

Ever since Betty Nambooze announced her own faction of DP, called the ‘Bad DP’, one of the people who have always been by her side is musician Ronald Mayinja.

Mayinja, who has for a very long time been seen as anti-government, is known for his conscious music that preaches against bad governance, corruption and uplifting of the poor. Among such songs is his hits like; Africa, Bunkenke, Ssente Y’ekibi and Tuwalana Nguzi.

However, he says that despite singing various songs against bad governance, little has changed thus the need to change tactics.

“I am not a politician per say but as musicians, we too have a lot of problems but I have come realise they can’t be solved through music alone. I have recorded a lot of songs highlighting the problems of the poor, against corruption and bad governance but this hasn’t solved anything,” he said while appearing on NBS.

According to Mayinja, this is what compelled him to join mainstream politics so he can be directly involved in the formulation of policies.

Mayinja is a member of Nambooze’s faction that has come to be known as ‘Bad DP’.

Mayinja is not the first entertainer to join politics. Lubaga South MP, Kato Lubwama also joined Parliament on the ticket of ‘Truth and Justice’, a breakaway faction of DP headed by Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.

Other entertainers who joined mainstream politics include Judith Babirye and Peter Ssematimba

“My son’s birthday falls on the same day as President Kizza Besigye’s. It was a pleasure to share food, drink and cake with the twins, their sister, our relations and friends. Laughter and merriment are medicine to embittered souls. And it is great to have my ban on Facebook over,” Makerere University researcher, Stella Nyanzi wrote last year as she celebrated her sons’ ninth birthday.

The twins; Kato and Wasswa made 10 years on Sunday but unlike last year, this time their birthday was celebrated in absence of their mother who is still incarcerated in Luzira prison for calling President Yoweri Museveni ‘a pair of buttocks’. Nevertheless, her absence didn’t stop them from celebrating their birthday.

“The boys turned 10 and like is custom, a birthday party was thrown in their honour. This year was a little different and Mama Stella’s absence was felt. However, the children still had a great time as they soaked in the sun and played all day long,” reads a message shared on Stella Nyanzi’s Facebook Timeline.
“Kato and Waswa together with their sister Baraka thanked Stella’s friends who were in attendance for supporting and being there for their mother during this time. Happy birthday again, Kato and Waswa,” the handle read in part.

The government is committed to ensuring safety of all livestock and crop products by curbing the dealership of counterfeit herbicides and pesticides.

God only security Uganda is left with – former Justice Kanyeihamba

COMMUNITY POLICING: IGP Kale Kayihura together with Military Police Commander Brigadier Sabiiti Muzeyi and KMP Commander Frank Mwesigwa, touring city suburbs which have been hit by crime.

The recent murders of high profile figures awakened fear amongst the public over their security.

And these fears of insecurity reached the peak last month following the brutal murder of the Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi. This, followed by the recent murders, theft and rape in the Masaka Greater Region and Najjera, has left many worried about their security.

Among those worried for their security is retired Supreme Court judge, Justice George Wilson Kanyeihamba, who is even guarded by three armed policemen given to him by government.

“Most Ugandans who don’t believe in God as I do are frightened out of their wit. They say there is a hit list for businessmen and VIPs. And today’s Red Pepper says Kabaka is on the hit list. ‘SFC takes over the security’ …. Really, must we talk about security? Security is no longer there,” he said while appearing on NBS TV in the afternoon.

“When they are still investigating the assassination of the late AIGP, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, a headline reads; a Gen(eral) has been arrested, and many police officers were involved. Who can talk about security in this country? We are living on the mercy of God. And I am sure that even the President himself and the cabinet are worried for their security. Please don’t talk about security anymore in Uganda. In our minds, it’s not there anymore,” Kanyeihamba said.

Kanyeihamba’s comments came just hours after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura advised residents of Najjera, Wakiso District, to form Whatsapp Groups to enhance their security.

Police, step up efforts against crime

PUNISHED! The seven police officers and crime preventer, Dan Tandeka, at the police court on charges of beating opposition sympathisers.

Today, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) General Kale Kayihura has paraded about 100 criminal suspects, allegedly involved in terrorizing the Greater Masaka Region.

It is well the news of the arrests might provide temporary relief to the residents of the affected areas who have been living in perpetual fear.

However, there are pertinent questions to be asked and most prominent is: ‘how did we get here?’

Over the years, there have been persistent complaints by Ugandans of various shades, accusing the police of lackluster performance in the way some members of the force handle some reported cases.

Not surprising therefore, the reported cases at the Police Standards Unit (PSU) are testimony to the level decadence that could have infiltrated the police, one of the reasons President Yoweri Museveni, while eulogizing the late Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi, asked the IGP to ‘clean up his house’.

Quite often some people with criminal minds seek ‘protection’ from the very people that are supposed to ensure that all Ugandans live in tranquil.

And, once out of the scrutiny of the force, the same criminals indulge in dubious activities, shielding themselves in disguise as ‘security personnel’. Here, in recent times, the name Dan Tandeka immediately comes to mind.

At the height of opposition activities after the elections in 2011 and 2016, there were various footages on display, showing stick-wielding goons beating up the opposition politicians with the police just looking on.

Needless to mention, such scenarios have only helped to coarsen the criminals, who believe that they can get away with crime as soon as they can identify with any of the security agencies.

So, what needs to be done? Like President Museveni counseled, let the police remove the ‘bad apples’, starting with those (including the top officers) who have been implicated in various cases at the PSU.

Secondly, now that the force has established a Police Post in almost all the areas, this must be followed by ‘feeling the presence of the police’, something that involves having both day and night patrols, the night patrols conducted with Local Council (LC) officials.

Those two approaches, beefed up with other initiatives, will go a long way restoring the image of the force and also to ensure that security for person and property is guaranteed.

Ugandans need to feel safe at all times!

Masaka Crime Wave: 20 confess to murder and rape

CRIME! A cross setion of suspected criminal paraded by the IGP kale Kayihura today at Katwe Police Station.

Police has paraded before media a group of suspects that have allegedly been terrorizing the Greater Masaka region.

At a media briefing held at Katwe Police Station, the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura presented 20 suspects who confessed to killing and raping residents of Masaka.

Majority said they had been promised to be employed as security guards but that on getting into Masaka, they were forced into crime.

One of the suspects, Juma Mulindwa told journalists that they were mobilized around Mt. Zion Hotel. He added that they couldn’t run away because they were being guarded by people in police uniform, who were under orders to shoot and kill.

“We were being guarded by people dressed in police uniform. They recruited us saying the previous group didn’t do the job well. We couldn’t resist because the people guarding us were told to ‘shoot to kill’ if any of us tried to leave. We were paid Shs20,000 per day,” Mulindwa told the IGP.

Another suspect, one Sulaiman, admitted to having been in charge of mobilization. “I was called to mobilize over 30 youth for crime and I was given Shs100, 000.”  He added that all their needs including marijuana, alcohol and cigarettes were provided.

They were also provided with machetes, hammers and knives which they have been using to execute their works, he said.

One Kajubi Ronald pleaded for forgiveness saying: “I only raped once in 2009. Since then I have never raped women again. I’ve been stealing because of poverty. I ask for forgiveness. I can repent and stop stealing.”

Similar to Kajubi, another suspect, Ssenyonga pleaded for forgiveness.

“I’m a thief. I break into houses with knives but hadn’t reached the level of killing. We have a leader called Kabugo Ssentongo. He pays us after executing the job well. I’m paid between Shs70, 000 – 80,000. I have never killed or raped anyone. I just break into houses and steal. I will give you all the names of the other thieves I work with. But I’m asking for forgiveness. You’ll not hear my name again.”

Kayihura said over 100 suspects had been arrested and 50 of these had already appeared in court.

“We have made a number of arrests and increased patrols in Greater Masaka and other areas,” he said. “We’ve tightened security in greater Masaka. Patrols have been frequent. Greater Masaka has been calm for two weeks now.”

For months this year, Greater Masaka region residents have been living in fear following the murder of over 20 people and injury of more than 80 others.

Thugs armed with machetes and clubs on Tuesday made a fresh raid on four villages in Kingo sub-county, Lwengo district, injuring eight residents.

They have occasionally been dropping fliers bearing warnings that they would attack homes.

Ethiopia’s Adwa is holy place, it removed shame from Africa – Museveni

Hundreds gathered in Ethiopia’s Northern town of Adwa, to commemorate the defeat of the Italian troops by Ethiopian forces in 1986 and the establishment of a Pan African University in Africa.

African leaders and several delegates, who had just attended the 6th Tana high level forum on security in Africa, flew to Adwa to cement African Unity with the establishment of the Pan African University in Africa.

President Yoweri Museveni and his host Ethiopia Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn laid the foundation stone for the construction of the University.

Museveni blamed African chiefs for not fighting and consolidating the sovereignty of the African continent. He thanked the people of Ethiopia for putting up a spirited resistance to colonialism, which couldn’t be done by many African chiefs.

“I am honoured along with my colleagues to be in Ethiopia. I am honored to be invited here at Adwa. I would have removed my shoes because this is a holy place, it is the holy land of Africa. It removed the shame from Africa. The African chiefs should be ashamed of their ancestors who looked on as Africa was being invaded and colonised by the foreigners,” he said.

Museveni said the colonisation of Africa was an indictment of the Africans. “Here in Ethiopia, your ancestors redeemed the honour of Africa and that is why we are here. Adwa is a remarkable inspiration in Africa,” he said.

About the Pan African University, President Museveni said, “I am glad you are establishing a University here at Adwa which will redeem Africa with a combined action of carriage, knowledge and new technology to benefit all Africans for development.”

Adwa is a market town and separate district in northern Ethiopia specifically in the Tigray region. It is best known as the community closest to the decisive battle of Adwa fought in 1896 with Italian troops. In the age of relentless European expansion into Africa, Ethiopia, led by Emperor Menelik II, defeated one of Europe’s major powers, Italy.

Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn said “Our ancestors have made huge sacrifices to safeguard the sovereignty of the country and pass it on to existing generations.” The battle according to him, was a victory for all black people. He tasked young Ethiopians to involve themselves in the development of the country.

“It is my strong conviction that a generation that remembers the history of its forefathers can also make its own history. In order to pass this history on to the next generation we have to build a war museum and a Pan African University and make Adwa a tourist destination,” he said.

The event saw marches by members of the Ethiopian security forces and displays by horse riders draped in the colours of the country, cheered by hundreds of people from the mountainous Devrch villages 25 kilometers from Axum Yohannes Airport.

Former Burundi President Pierre Buyoya, former Malawi, President, Joyce Hilda Banda, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, Botswana Vice President, Mokgweetst Masisi and former Nigeria President, Olugesun Obasanjo attended.

Museveni in Ethiopia for Tana high-level forum on security in Africa

President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Bahir Dar, Ethiopias’ second largest city for the 6th Tana High-Level forum on security in Africa, where leaders are stoking their efforts to protect the continents vast natural resources amidst mind-boggling challenges.

The challenges including conflicts, a population explosion, land degradation and the foreign exploitation of the continents’ rich and diverse natural resources among other things.

Museveni arrived this morning at Bahir Dar Airport and was received by Ethiopias’ Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs Worknesh Gebeyehu and his deputy Hirut Zemene and Uganda’s Ambassador to Addis Ababa, H.E Mull Katende among other officials.

Africa‟s natural resource endowments stand at 12 per cent of global oil reserves, 40 per cent of global gold deposits, and about two thirds of the world‟s most suitable land for farming and forests.

Unfortunately, the continent has not been able to fully maximise the developmental benefits that should have accrued from exploiting the resources.

According to reports, the mispricing of natural resources in Africa leads to the loss of US $50 billion per year, more than Africa‟s combined foreign direct investment and overseas development aid. In addition, according to an Oxfam estimate, more than US $18 billion per year is lost through resource-related conflicts in Africa, not including indirect costs.

The forum will focus on the theme of “Natural Resource Governance in Africa”, reflecting the centrality of natural resources, both in historical as well as in contemporary times. It also seeks to showcase the exploitation of the continent’s rich and diverse natural resources, both on land and sea, have created several paradoxes; in particular, those leading to inequality and poverty, corruption, unemployment, environmental degradation, violent conflicts, and the elusive quest to realise Africa’s full developmental potential.

One of the contentious issues Africa faces in the natural resource sector is how to reverse the misfortunes of exploitation and “bring governance back” in ensuring that benefits accruing from the continent’s providential endowments create new opportunities and positive multiplier effects for citizens and the state.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo who is the chairman of the Forum’s advisory board, called on African governments to improve their negotiation skills to ensure that their citizens get the best deal from mining and oil drilling companies operating in their countries.
