KCCA councillors warn minister Kamya over Park Yard demolition

DEMOLISHED: The Park Yard market in downtown Kampala

Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) councilors have this morning warned Minister for Kampala, Betty Kamya against passing decisions without consulting the Council.

What emains of Park Yard market

The warning was made during a crisis meeting convened by City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, where top on agenda of the urgent meeting was the eviction of traders from Park Yard market. They also resolved to visit the market to see what was taking place, and by press time the councilors led by Lukwago were moving towards the market.

The demolition of structures at Park Yard market started at 3am this morning when police sealed off the market and demolitions kicked off with traders’ merchandise still on the stalls.

On February 7, Kamya issued the directive through Council, giving the traders 30 days to vacate. However, the demolition has started ten days before the deadline.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Lukwago likened the move to land grabbing.

“This is just a matter of land grabbing, just like the commission of inquiry that has been set up to probe land matters in Uganda, Museveni and his government are all out to grab land,” the Lord Mayor said.

Millions lost as Park Yard sealed off

EMPATHISING: Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Kampala MPs Allan Sewanyana and Mubarak Munyagwa at the Park Yard business hub last week.

Hundreds of unemployed youth have descended on the Park Yard, stealing merchandise worth millions of shillings following the late night sealing off the business hub in downtown Kampala.

Eyewitness accounts indicate police had to reinforce after the goons went on rampage at the open market that has been hosting thousands of traders dealing in assorted merchandise.

The closure of Park Yard followed a directive issued last week by Kampala Minister Beti Olive Kamya, a development that irked Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, forcing him together with Kampala MPs Allan Sewanyana and Mubarak Munyagwa to go downtown and empathize with the traders. The trio was arrested but has since vowed to challenge the eviction.

At the time Lukwago said the business hub cannot be closed on ‘the orders of just one person, Beti Kamya’.

‘Park Yard market cannot be declared illegal by just one person, Minister Kamya’, Lukwago vowed.

Interestingly, Ms Kamya had given the traders an ultimatum of 30 days, but barely two weeks into the deadline, government swung into action, sealing off the place that has previously caught fire four times since 2012.

It is not possible to establish when the government and Park Yard vendors parted ways, given that in December 2013 the market caught fire and the traders lost billions worth of property, prompting government to come to the traders’ rescue with a bailout of Shs 1 billion.

UN warns Burundi’s Nkurunziza on fourth term

WARNED AGAINST ATTACKS: Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary General. UN Photo/ Jean-Marc FerrŽ

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is warning Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza against seeking a fourth term, saying such a move risks deepening the crisis in the African country.

In a report obtained by AFP, the UN chief says he is ‘very concerned’ by recent statements by Nkurunziza, in power since 2005, suggesting he could seek a fourth term in office, which would require changes to the constitution.

“An attempt by the president to seek a fourth term in office under the current circumstances would risk intensifying the crisis and undermining collective efforts to find a sustainable solution,” wrote Guterres in the report sent to the Security Council.

Hundreds have died in violence in Burundi triggered by the president’s decision in April 2015 to stand in elections for a third term in office, which he went on to win.

Some 387 000 people have fled the country, and that figure is expected to surpass 500 000 in 2017, according to the UN refugee agency.

Guterres expressed concern over the growing role of the ruling party’s youth militia, known as the Imbonerakure, and said more than 200 cases of enforced disappearances since October were “of particular concern.”

The youth militia “is contributing to a sense of insecurity and a climate of fear” and is reportedly implicated in many cases of killings, arrests, disappearances, and some cases of sexual violence, he said.

The report was sent to council members following the adoption of a resolution in July authorizing the deployment of up to 228 UN police to monitor security and human rights in Burundi.

The government in Bujumbura has rejected the resolution and is still stonewalling the United Nations over the proposed police deployment, the report confirmed.

Burundi’s Ambassador Albert Shingiro described the report as ‘biased’ and driven by UN envoy Jamal Benomar, whom he accused of ‘seeking revenge’ after his government asked that he be replaced.

The ambassador said that it was ‘very surprising’ that Guterres raised concerns about term limits for Nkurunziza “when many presidents in Africa and elsewhere are serving their fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh term without any concern being raised.”

Burundi this week again sent a letter to Guterres asking that a new envoy be named to replace Benomar.

The Security Council postponed a meeting on Burundi scheduled for this week, but it is expected to discuss the crisis in March.

Presenting on TV not a job – Zella

CAT FIGHT: (L-R) Zella and Zahara Toto

Yesterday was a birthday for Spark TV presenter, a one Zahara Toto. However, what she received on the day from Don Zella, the former girlfriend of Bigeye, was the least expected on the day. It was a cat fight.

This fight was started by Zahara who has allegedly been attacking Zella on her Spark TV show.

“Zahara too, this is the right time for you to rethink about abusing other people on air, calling them whores. You too are just hustling on TV. You are a grown up woman only that you are less known. With four kids, it’s high time you started minding about your business and leave alone people who are on their hustle,” Zella ranted.

She went on: “Every kid with its father, we also have details about you only that we opt to remain silent. Though, if it becomes too much, we also roll out what we know. I wouldn’t be bothering to talk about you because you are nothing before me but it’s too much. You can do your job without attacking each and every person otherwise you are even badly off (as compared you the people you are attacking.”

Zella further advised her fellow women to learn how to respect others because all have a thing they know about each other only that they prefer to keep it to themselves.

“Everyone has one’s past life. If you don’t know anything about me, it’s better to remain silent. Style up lady – working on Spark Tv doesn’t make you mortal. It’s not a job to me……”

Responding to Zella’s rant, Zahara said having four kids isn’t a big issue.

“Having four kids is a blessing; many are looking for kids. I don’t care even if each has its own dad as long as I’ve never come to your house, asking for food or school fees. If you were to look through the fathers to my children, is there any you can compare to your man? Stop wasting my time because I am not a whore………..” Zahara, formerly with Club Venom and Play hit back and the war is still raging on social media.

What advice do you give to the two?

Qute Kaye’s experiences first ‘miracle’ after getting saved

BEFORE AND AFTER: Qute Kaye

Singer Qute Kaye recently became a born-again Christian at Pastor Robert Kayanja’s church in Rubaga.

And within a week after changing faith he has begun experiencing miracles. First, he came back into the limelight after years of struggling with no tangible results from his music. However, his just released gospel song has now received warm reception in Christian circles.

But the biggest miracle of all is, he has been ‘blessed’ with a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero car, given to him by Pastor Kayanja. Before the ‘miracle’, Kaye had narrated a story to the congregants, telling them that while on his way to church using a taxi, a Muslim man had slapped him, accusing the singer of denigrating Islam.

“Here is the key and logbook to your car, a Pajero so that no one can slap you again,” Pastor Kayanja said amid ululations as he handed over the keys and a brown envelope believed to have contained the log book.

Prior to getting saved, Kaye had converted to Islam last year, confessing that he had been a devil worshipper. He had since disappeared from the public eye until recently when he turned up at Kayanja’s church.

VISITED: Indian VP Muhammad Ansari and his host President Yoweri Museveni.

The Indian government has announced a donation of assorted drugs worth US$2 million and medical equipment worth US$ 1 million dollars.

HULLO: Indian VP Muhammad Ansari shakes hands with President Yoweri Museveni shortly before the two held talks.

The announcement was made by the Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari while on a two-day visit to Uganda, during which he held diverse talks with President Yoweri Museveni, Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi and Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

Among the issues discussed was combatting terrorism, Uganda’s steering of the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA69) under foreign affairs minister Sam Kahamba Kutesa, and Indian military assistance to Uganda through which the Asian giant offered military personnel to train UPDF officers at the Senior Staff College at Kimaka.

And in his speech President Museveni invited additional private sector investments from India, highlighting the progress achieved so far by the Indian community in Uganda numbering about 26,000 in a wide range of important sectors such as agro processing, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing.

Both sides also noted that India had made tremendous strides in the development of its renewable energy capacity and therefore would be in position to enhance mutual cooperation in the energy sector.

Kiir in Ethiopia for security talks

IN ETHIOPIA: South Sudan President Salva Kiir and the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalgn

South Sudan President Salva Kiir is in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, for talks on the implementation of border control and security cooperation deal signed last year.

President Kiir and Ethiopian Hailemariam Desalegn signed a series of cooperation agreements on Friday,

During his three day visit, the South Sudanese president will hold talks with the Ethiopian prime minister today, that include a security arrangement to stop hosting armed opposition groups in their respective countries.. Also, the two leaders are expected to sign a number of bilateral cooperation agreements including security issues in line with a memorandum of understanding signed last year.

Last October, the two leaders signed an agreement on border control and security cooperation but it seems that the implementation conditions had not been included in the deal.

“It will be something good for us, South Sudanese and Ethiopians, should these two leaders put into action what they will agree on. It’s our hope that the two agree on security issues. We don’t want any negative force to use another country’s territory to launch hostile activities on the other. Borders are really important to a country and having a good relationship with the bordering country is always the goal for both countries to progress together,” said Presidential Spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny.

“South Sudan-Ethiopia borders are not safe and this is what has prompted the two to meet,” Ateny stressed.

The Nuer in Ethiopia’s western region of Gambella, have kept their tribal links with the South Sudanese Nuer across the history.

Since the eruption of hostilities between the government army loyal to President Kiir and troops loyal to his former First Vice President Riek Machar in December 2013, many rebels crossed into the Ethiopian territory of Gambella where the South Sudanese army cannot hunt them.

Juba government was suspicious for the tolerance that Addis Ababa had shown towards the South Sudanese rebel presence in Gambella.

It further went to object the participation of Ethiopian soldiers in the regional protection force. However, in November Kiir declared accepting their participation and pointed to the security deal signed with Desalegn.

South Africa Xenophobia attacks: Nigerian students order MTN out

XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS: South Africa perpetrators of violence

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given an ultimatum to all South African companies in Nigeria including giant Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) to relocate over the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The students gave the ultimatum at a peaceful demonstration at some South African companies in Abuja.

During the march the students carried a banner, which read: ‘NANS Against Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians’.’

While the students marched, the security men stood and watched to ensure law and order.

The president of NANS, Kadiri Aruna, said in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at DSTV office, a South African company, in Wuse 2, Abuja, that Nigerian students had resolved to condemn the attacks.

Aruna said that the protest would also serve as a warning to other countries trying to underrate Nigerians.

He said that after 48 hours, if nothing was done, messages would be sent to students in all university campuses to bring down MTN masts all over the country.

Aruna said that DSTV and Shoprite would also be affected as the union had put adequate strategies in place to make the action effective.

“All the South African business empires in Nigeria and their collaborators in Nigeria will be affected.

“I don’t want to say we will be barbaric but we will not be lawful in our actions, we will do it and face the consequences, enough of this rubbish,’’ he said.

Aruna stressed that the poor treatment being meted out to Nigerians was particularly insulting given the role Nigeria played in ending the apartheid regime in South Africa.

He said: “Nigeria contributed 80 per cent of the freedom the South Africans are enjoying today because we saved them from the jaws of apartheid.

“Who is South Africa to humiliate Nigeria? So they forget things so soon, let them go back to history and records to see how much financial assistance and what the country did to save them”.

The union president said that the situation was inhuman and for this reason all reasonable Nigerians must react.

“In science they say you use malaria to cure malaria, now you use madness to cure their madness, and that is why we are advising them to leave Nigerian soil before 48 hours.’’

He said that the Federal Government should not wait till the dying minute before evacuating Nigerians from South Africa.

Aruna said it was time for government not to only condemn the attacks but take a firm stand by summoning South Africa’s high commissioner and if possible cut diplomatic ties with that country.

He said that the last time the xenophobic attack happened nothing was done, no action was taken and no arrest was made and that was why South Africans repeated the attacks.

Aruna said it was so unfortunate that during the attacks the South African Government refused to take up its responsibility of securing Nigerians and their properties.

“The government of South Africa is criminally quiet and they say silence is consent, and their police are folding their hands while they are killing Nigerians, this is conspiracy, enough is enough,’’ he said.

He said the peaceful rally would continue and spread across the country.
