Museveni warns UPDF officers in High Command meeting

MADE CHANGES: Commander in Chief of armed forces. Gen. Yoweri Museveni.

President Yoweri Museveni who is also the Commander-in-Chief of armed forces on Monday issued a stern warning to UPDF soldiers over corruption.

According to military sources, Gen. Museveni told the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces High Command meeting that took place at State House in Entebbe that corruption is “ravaging” the army again.

Museveni said he would not allow UPDF, which has been credited for peace support operations in the region, to be tainted by some corrupt army officers.

His remarks come at time a Shs2 billion fake arms deal that reportedly involves some senior officers and other army officers. The army officers are allegedly to have conned a Polish company of the said billions after disguising as the Ministry of Defence Procurement Committee that sought supplier of arms.

Some of the implicated officers who recently went to Poland to meet the directors of the company and settle the issue were shocked to learn that the Inspector General of Police General Kale Kayihura and External Security Organisation boss, Ambassador Julius Ocwet, had met the directors of the company and compiled a report.

However, as of now there is no concrete evidence pinning any senior official in the fake arms deal.

Akena death: Kanyamunyus remanded, Acholi MPs threaten to storm Luzira

Nakawa Magistrate’s Court has remanded businessman Matthew Kanyamunyu, his girlfriend Cynthia Munangwari, and his elder brother Joseph Kanyamunyu back to Luzira prison.

The trio had appeared before court for mention of a case in which they are accused of killing child rights activist, Kenneth Akena.

However, the State Attorney Racheal Nabwire, informed court that investigations into the case were still incomplete and requested for an adjournment.

The case was adjourned to 20, 2016 as Kanyamunyu and his co-accused were returned to Luzira.

Meanwhile, speaking to journalists outside Court, the Kitgum Woman MP, Beatrice Anywar said they were satisfied that the suspects were being brought before Courts of law but hastened to add that they would go to Luzira Prisons to establish if the suspects stay in the cells.

“Hopefully justice will take its course. We are following it very closely, my only hope is that he really sleeps in Luzira. One of these days we shall also make checks…because we don’t want any ‘manyanga’ (foolery),” Anywar said.

This won’t be the first time that legislators from Acholi sub-region will be storming secured places over Kanyamunyu. Shortly after the incident and subsequent arrest of Kanyamunyu and his girlfriend, the legislators led by Aruu County North, MP Odonga Otto and his five colleagues among them Beatrice Anywar, Oketayot Lowila and Anthony Akol, stormed Jinja Road Police Station demanding to see where Kanyamunyu was detained.

Prosecution alleges that on November 12, this year, Matthew Kanyamunyu, Munwangari and his brother Joseph and other accomplices still at large, while on Kampala- Jinja road near Malik Car Bond, opposite Uganda Manufacturers Association offices, in Nakawa Division, “with malice aforethought caused the death of Kenneth Akena”.

Akena, who was buried last month in Kitgum District, originally hailed from an area represented by MP Beatrice Anywar.

US warns of terror attacks on Bujumbura

NO GO AREA? The beachside of the leafy lakeside Kajaga area in Burundi

The United States embassy in Burundi has warned US citizens in the East African nation of potential attacks from ‘regional terror groups’ on Western interests.

Burundi has been gripped by a social and political crisis for the past 18 months which has left an estimated 1,000 dead, 6,000 imprisoned and 20, 000 missing. The instability has greatly impacted the country’s security situation and diplomatic relations.

Over the weekend, the US embassy in the capital Bujumbura warned American citizens of ‘heightened security concerns that regional terror groups remain actively interested in attacking US and other Western and local interests in Burundi’.

In an emergency message published on its website, the diplomatic mission said it had received ‘specific information leading to concern about potential activity in early December’, including, but not limited to, the Kajaga neighbourhood on the outskirts of Bujumbura.

Known for palm-studded beach resorts, Kajaga was once a popular destination. “The embassy has now placed the neighbourhood and associated restaurants and beach clubs off limits to embassy personnel until further notice.”

Last week, Willy Nyamitwe, a top adviser to Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza, survived an assassination attempt as he returned to his home in Kajaga. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a high-ranking presidential official said Nyamitwe, the most public figure of the embattled government, “was met with sustained gunfire and grenade explosions”. The chief spokesman suffered a slight injury to his arm, but one of his bodyguards was killed and another injured.

US citizens who do visit these areas are advised to avoid large public gatherings, especially those with no visible security presence, review or enhance personal security plans and be prepared to enact those plans.
