New Tourism minister Kiwanda hobnobs with giant python

The new Minister of State for Tourism, Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda experienced the wariest orientation any Uganda minister could ask for while officiating at his first official ceremony in Entebbe.

The Mityana North legislator who also doubles as Buganda Parliamentary caucus chairman was involuntarily tasked into carrying a python during the Entebbe Tourism Association (ETA) expo at the Mayor’s Gardens on Sunday July 3rd.

To help him overcome his fears was close colleague and Entebbe Mayor Vincent De Paul Kayanja.

The expo was organized by the ETA in conjunction with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) and the Entebbe Municipality.

Hundreds of people from and around Entebbe attended the expo that also saw UWEC showing a variety of animals.

Protesters siege begging Zimbabwe minister in London

Zimbabwe finance minister Patrick Chinamasa

The Zimbabwean Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa, who is on a ‘begging spree’ in European capitals, was besieged by angry Zimbabwean exiles in London and had to be rescued by police.

Chinamasa was speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House on a desperate visit to Europe to try to raise money for the bankrupt Zanu PF regime.

Protestors from the Zimbabwe Vigil and its sister organisation Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe picketed  Chatham House with posters reading: ‘No to Mugabe’s lies’, ‘Don’t prop up the Mugabe regime’, ‘Don’t lend money to thieves’ and ‘Zimbabweans reject odious debt’. While the meeting was under way an impassioned Cephas Maswoswa sang protests songs.

It became apparent that Chinamasa and his companions were afraid to come out and face the music. The demonstrators deterred an attempt to exit from a side door of Chatham House and eventually the police arrived and provided a safe corridor for Chinamasa and his friends to access the Zimbabwean Ambassador’s car amid jeers from protestors, fired up by messages from home of mounting unrest in all urban areas.

Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, has banned shisha smoking in the country, asking clerics, parents and all leaders to fight against dealers and smokers.

The PM’s order came as Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC) Paul Makonda declared war against dealers of tobacco-laced shisha in the country’s business capital, insisting that all the joints that sell shisha should be closed by next Monday.

Shisha is molasses-based tobacco concoction smoked in a water pipe known as ‘hookah’ and Mr Majaliwa said the consumption of shisha resulted into temptation to indulge in all sorts of vices and eroding morals among the youth.

“The statement by Mr Makonda came as a government directive. Therefore, all regional leaders, including mayors and district commissioners (DCs) should implement that directive with immediate effect,” he added.

The Premier issued the directive at the Khoja Shia Ithnaasheri Mosque along Indira Gandhi Street in Dar es Salaam during a special Iftar hosted by the Ithnaasheri Community, which was attended by various religious leaders.

Thieves raid S Sudan upper house

A signpost at the South Sudan Council of States offices

At least 200,000 South Sudanese Pounds were stolen from South Sudan’s Council of States in Juba by criminals on Sunday morning, according to local sources.

The sources said the criminals poisoned three of the security guards by sending some girls to give them drugged food, incapacitating them. The guards, who were hungry, accepted the food from the girls thinking that they were being generous.

Zacharia Abdalla, one of the security guards who survived the incident, said the girls who assisted the criminals were four in number. He suspected that the drugs had been in the juice that they were given.

“They were four South Sudanese girls. They came and told Gatkuoth, don’t go for dinner we will bring you food with us. This was at night,” said Abdalla.

Jaden Jada, Acting Speaker of the Council of States, said that thieves then stormed the Council of States during the early hours of the night on Sunday during a rainstorm.

He acknowledged that the criminals drugged the security guards and then looted the properties inside the council. Jada said the criminals did not use their guns during the incident.

The guards were taken to Juba Teaching Hospital for treatment and were reported to be in critical condition. One of them passed away.

Brian Majwega on Monday signing a two year deal that will keep him at the club until 2018

League kings Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA FC) have completed the signing of Simba (Tanzania) winger Brian Majwega on a free transfer.

The Cranes international, 26, has signed a two-year contract with the Lugogo club and will officially join on July 1.

Majwega was a free agent after being released from his contract at Dar es Salam and leaves after six months at the mainland club.

His arrival at KCCA will be another boost to manager Mike Mutebi, who is looking to shape his squad ahead of the club’s attempt defend the Uganda Premier League, try to win the Uganda Cup but also in the 2017 CAF Champions League.

While with KCCA Majwega won back to back league titles, not only being part of the squad but playing an integral part on the left side of midfield.

“I am very happy to sign for the KCCA and for Mike Mutebi,” Majwega said when contacted by this website. “The history of the club is important for me in my decision to return back home.

“Playing in the CAF Champions League is very important for players in their careers and I am happy to play for the club that gave me the chance to showcase my talents.”

Known for his exceptional dribbling skills and speed, Majwega’s lack of club football saw Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic exclude him from recent squads for all the Fifa 2018 World Cup and Afcon 2017 qualifiers.

This will be Majwega’s second stint with the 11 time league championship, his first coming in the 2009/2010 season till the 2014/2015 when he transferred to Azam of Tanzania in January 2015 where he was earning player earned $2500 (Shs8.4m) per month.

While with KCCA, Majwega won back to back league titles, not only being part of the squad but playing an integral part on the left side of midfield.

KCCA have already been busy in the transfer market, having agreed to sign aging Uganda international Vincent Kayizzi from rivals Express FC.

Majwega and his month issues

Majwega five months later fell out with Azam coach Stewart Hall and tried to engineer a move back to KCCA but ties between some officials at the Lugogo club and the player had been severed over a reported sign-on fee balance.

Julius Kabugo, the KCCA FC chairman, explained to Daily Monitor in November 2015 Majwega’s transfer to Azam then. “Brian signed up a three-year Shs50m contract with the club with a buy-out close of $150,000 (Shs506m). “Azam offered $90,000 (Shs304m); $60,000 (Shs203m) for club and $30,000 (Shs101m) for the player) for the transfer of Brian, which we had initially rejected but the player insisted on a transfer.

“This implied that the club was bound to make losses on this transaction and as such, we negotiated with him for the forfeiture of the outstanding Shs25m, especially that he had not served even three months of the contract.” Kabugo added: “Also as a club, we had sold him below our valuation. That’s when we received the $60,000 (Shs203m) and released him to Azam. If Brian is saying we didn’t agree on that, then that’s unfortunate. “I will request our legal team to study this and advise. Otherwise at the time that was the understanding.” Fufa’s Hussein explained that sign-on fees are not captured anywhere in Fifa player transfers.

He instead move to Azam’s bitter rival Simba where he failed to get playing time as well and was released alongside other foreigners last month.

Logic would dictate that rather than keep whining over the arrears and missed opportunities; Majwega has done the right things trying to reignite his career back at home.

Museveni says Entebbe raid linked Middle East to Africa

President Yoweri Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has said that the Entebbe raid was “another bond” linking “Israel and Palestine to Africa.”

He was on Monday afternoon addressing selected guests at the ceremony to welcome visiting Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the scene of the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue in Uganda, in which his brother, Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu who led the raid, was killed.

Museveni evoked the biblical story of Joseph, which “was also a sad story but also created a bond, just like this one here.”

He also said “baby Jesus” was hidden in Egypt, apparently implying that he was “another bond between Africa and Palestine, both born out of sad circumstances.”

Museveni implored that “Even… the Muslim religion” bonded with Africa when the Prophet Muhammad was forced to flee to the continent.

He went on to link other historical and mythical events that connect the Middle East to Africa.

Turning to Netanyahu, President Museveni said, “Your brother Jonathan, some Israeli hostages, and some Ugandan soldiers were killed here, on that night, fourth of July 1976.”

“Fortunately, the rescue mission succeeded and the innocent civilians were rescued,” he added.

About oil power of the Arab states

In his speech, Museveni also related a story about a meeting he once had with the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“When I went to Iran, and there was the man who was president at the time, the one before the current one – Ahmadinejad – I told him about this biblical story,” he said, relating to the stories linking Jews to the Holy Land. “He was telling me the Jews are not from the Middle East, but from Europe. I said no, I have my Bible, I had my bible with me, I showed it to him.”

Museveni related that Ahmadinejad “didn’t know at all, “In the bible it talks about the Persians and Midianites. I said where are the Midianite? I know you are the Persians. But where are Midianites? He didn’t know.”

The point is, he said, “There is a lot of ignorance. Sure, I don’t want to tell my Arab friends and our Iranians friends that you are all mentioned in the Bible.”

He also noted, as an aside, that “Ugandans believe you are Christian… they don’t know that you are the grandchildren of Abraham.”

“I normally tell my Arab friends that you’re both mentioned in the Bible,” Museveni said.

Israel commemorates raid on Entebbe

Under a huge white tent sat several hundreds of guests, including several dozen Israeli soldiers, Ugandan officials and members of the local Jewish community.

The speeches were being delivered at a control tower of the Old Entebbe Airport, where the hostage drama unfolded 40 years ago to the day.

The emcee, reading from a notebook, said that the rescuing of hostages is an important religious commandment in Judaism.

She read out the names of the three victims who were killed at the airport, and Dora Bloch, the 72-year-old British-Israeli who was later killed in Entebbe hospital.

Akiva Laxer, one of the Entebbe hostages, uttered a blessing of thanks for surviving the ordeal.

“On behalf of my three children,” he says, “I bless You, Lord, our God, Who has performed a miracle for me in this place,” he said.

Addressing the crowd, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he is “moved” to stand on the ground where Israeli soldiers freed the hostages thousands of kilometers from Israeli soil.

“I am moved to stand here on the place where IDF troops rescued hostages here in the heart of Africa, so far from home,” he said.

He mentioned his brother Yoni, who he said charged at the head of the force that landed in the airport and attacked the terrorists.

“Entebbe is always with me, in my thoughts, my consciousness and deep in my heart,” he confessed.

“Every one of you,” Netanyahu continued, “the soldiers and pilots, whether here or not — you didn’t know whether you would come home,” Netanyahu said and praised soldiers and pilots who participated in raid.

“You came to rescue, but you knew that if something went wrong there was no certainty that someone would come to rescue you,” he added.

Israeli commandos freed more than 100 hostages held for a week at an airport terminal, in a daring operation. They returned to Israel on 4 July 1976.

Four hostages, at least seven hostage-takers and 20 Ugandan troops who were guarding the old terminal were also killed.

Almost all those freed were Israeli and non-Israeli Jews, who had been separated from other passengers by the hostage-takers. The Air France captain and his 12-strong crew were also rescued.

The non-Jewish passengers had been released by the hostage-takers earlier in the week.

wreath

After the ceremony, Netanyahu laid a wreath at a monument commemorating the raid on the airport.

The Israeli leader also unveiled two plaques. One plaque has the names of those who were killed during the Entebbe raid on 4 July 1976.

The other is for the renovation of the trauma centre at Mulago National Referral hospital.
