Celebration and Tears of Joy as Rising Woman Initiative Comes to an end

Season five of dfcu Bank’s Rising Woman initiative came to an end today with the announcement and award of the female entrepreneurs who emerged as the top 10 winners in the competition. The top 10 were selected out of 23 finalists who faced a panel of select judges in a business proposal defense exercise.

Held in partnership with Monitor Publications and Uganda Investment Authority, the Rising Woman Initiative aims to recognize, celebrate, and promote a culture of mentorship among women in the business space in Uganda. As part of its roll-out, over 180 female entrepreneurs from across the country participated in a highly competitive business proposal submission exercise. In addition, hundreds of businesswomen received skilling in various areas, provided through the Rising Woman business caravans that traveled to 7 districts across the country.

This year, the Rising Woman campaign was held under the theme; taking Your Business Ahead’, with an aim of providing female entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to improve how they operate their businesses; enabling them to create profitable operations.

Out of the 23 proposals that made it to the defence stage, APA Original Kisubi Tea LTD, HEBs Organic LTDand Prio Medical LTD – My Musawo APPemerged as the overall winners in the 3 categories of Agribusiness Value Addition, Manufacturing & Consumer Services and Digital Innovation & E-Commerce. Each of the winners won cash funding worth UGX 10,000,000/-. In addition, all the top 10 winners won a fully paid study tour to a location outside of Uganda.

The cross-border trip will double as an educational and mentorship exercise and will allow the entrepreneurs to meet and learn from other successful businesswomen outside Uganda. Mathias Katamba, CEO of dfcuBank congratulated all the women entrepreneurs who made the bold move to participate in the competition.

“I would like to start by congratulating every entrepreneur who took the first step to participate in this competition. I am sure you have learnt a lot about how to take your businesses to the next level throughout the course of this competition and I believe you are all winners in one way or another. Congratulations!” he remarked.

“Our past Rising Woman seasons and our day-to-day interactions with women entrepreneurs have continually revealed to us that Ugandan businesswomen are innovative, creative, and ingenious in the way they start and conduct business. We have also learnt that they require support to transform their dreams to thriving businesses and we have done that through programs like Rising Woman. Working with the right partners such as Daily Monitor and Uganda Investment Authority has enabled us to reach more women with the skills and financial support required to grow their businesses.”

“dfcu Bank’s commitment to women-led business ventures started with the introduction of the dfcu Women in Business Program in 2018 that has to date, directly benefited over 60,000 women across the country. Our pledge today and for the future is that through our specialized products, services, and partnerships, we will continue to Make More Possible for Small and Medium Enterprises that are owned by women entrepreneurs,” Katamba said.

The event was graced by Amelia Kyambadde, former Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and current Senior Presidential Advisor on Industry to the president of the Republic of Uganda. She applauded the organizers for giving women a platform to challenge and build their business muscle.

“Women are a powerful resource in this country. We make up the largest population and are very entrepreneurial. Africa leads the world in terms of women in business. Men might have bigger businesses, but women have also woken up and run bigger businesses. Sometimes when you see some of these projects you realize that those who have no voice are frustrated but such projects like the Rising woman give voice to the voiceless. This is for us women; it is our platform!” she said.

“My appeal to the winners today is, “Don’t think about Uganda only, think regional and globally. I run a few businesses and failed because I did not have a proper business plan. I urge you to give planning ample time. Additionally, always stay informed because the information is power. Use the internet to get information about the world, about finances. As I conclude, I ask you to think harder, think about yourself and how you want your legacy to look like, rebrand yourself where necessary and think beyond the horizon for the good of your business,” she advised.

Ruth Asasira, the Manger Women in Business & Special Programs at dfcu Bank noted that since the launch of the Initiative in February of this year, “…we have directly interfaced with and trained over 5,000 women across the country in a bid to provide solutions to the issues they face as participants in the country’s informal sector.”

“Through this program, we hope to see challenges such as limited access to finance, markets, and business skills become a thing of the past as these women-owned enterprises attain financial growth, improve their communities and contribute to Uganda’s economic growth,” Asasira said.

The impact of technology on human life

Science and technology are important components of modern life. They have long gone beyond local boundaries and today affect everyone’s life. Technological products have always changed and continue to change human life. Somewhere – in a positive direction, somewhere – in a negative way, but there are usually more benefits. Therefore, it is irrational to deny the technological process or try to abandon it. We invent ways to live more comfortably, safer, healthier and more interesting.

The popularity of bookmakers is growing every year. If you are looking for a bookmaker with a cool mobile app, then you should definitely try this online platform. One of India’s most famous betting apps, 4rabet, offers its wagerers a convenient way to participate in sports tournaments on iOS and Android gadgets. Both app and apk. files can be found on the bookmaker’s site and downloaded d4rabet appirectly from it.

How scientific and technological progress has changed humanity

An urbanized society is concentrated in cities. A large population is a strong demand, therefore, in such a society, public, administrative, financial, and cultural resources are concentrated in cities. Therefore, developed cities quickly swell and often turn out to be overcrowded – they provide something that is not available in small settlements.

Modern technologies and their role in human life

The transition from manual labor to mechanization opened the way towards automation and robotization. From electrical to electronics, and from it to computer science and information technology. At this stage humanity is now. With the advent of industrial robots, machine learning, artificial intelligence and cloud services, a person is ready to entrust production to machines, and leave control to himself.

The concept of the «Internet of things» has appeared: devices and systems that are used in industry, the domestic sphere, public life and at the global level communicate with each other via the Internet. Moreover, they adjust their work in accordance with changes in external and internal conditions.

Here are some examples of how technology has changed and continues to change human life:

  • Robots and automatic systems teach us. They do not forget information, they easily find it, operate, and also adapt to the individuality of students.
  • We communicate in a new way. Most of the communication of modern man takes place on the Internet. Even 20 years ago, this was hard to imagine. Take away the Internet from a person, and it will become much more difficult for him to contact friends, plan an exit from the house, pay for purchases, navigate the city, etc.
  • We got new habits and addictions. The approval of acquaintances and strangers, the desire and ability to show or see oneself in the best light, the ability to anonymously speak out on any occasion – these features of modern communication reveal both the best and worst sides of the character, and sometimes become psychological problems.
  • We know ourselves better. Sensors, sensors, big data processing in medical centers, compact biological data trackers – all this is designed to help those who want to be healthy. It is difficult and early to talk about an increase in duration under the influence of this factor. But with a reasonable approach, any invention is beneficial.
  • We become less critical. This may seem like a negative consequence, but the development of the situation is logical. After all, a person invents something that makes his life easier, makes it more pleasant. Therefore, both physical and mental challenges become less.

How to choose the befitting hosting for your blog

There are over 527 million blogs on the internet today, with the blogging industry exceeding $400 billion last year.

Yes, everyone wants a piece of this cake. Indeed, the enthusiasm leads many to jump on the blogging bandwagon and launch their blog.

Blogging is a massive income revenue. Just like sports betting (more information on our site), a successful blog can lavish you with an enormous fortune.

Of course, a blog is one of the most personal digital conduits to pass your information to the world. And it is free to just anyone.

You don’t need a doctorate in journalism; anyone can open a blog about anything.

Oh, it appears you will need a host

But then, your blog will not magically hang in thin air.

It definitely has to be hosted. Here is where many aspiring and even experienced bloggers start scratching their hair.

The big question is which hosting plan would be best suited to your blogging needs.

The choice of a befitting hosting plan for your blog can be quite a tricky one. If you get it wrong, it could squeeze the joy out of your blog and even out of your life.

We don’t mean to scare you off your blogging ambitions, but here are some of the principal features you should look out for when choosing a hosting plan.

You have to keenly watch out for speed

Your website visitors have been spoiled with fast-loading websites. They will quickly exit your blog if it lags.

A typical website visitor to your blog expects your site to load in less than 2 seconds. If it gets longer than that, “bye!” They are gone.

For online shoppers, speed is even more delicate. Statistics reveal that 79% of your prospective buyers will not come back to your website if speed is unimpressive.

Again, more than 50% of shoppers attribute their loyalty to an online vendor to the loading speed of their website.

So if your website takes too long to load, congratulations, you have the royal privacy of being the sole reader of your blog.

This is why it is critical to get a fast-loading web host. How close are the host’s servers to your target audience?

The closer the servers, the faster your blog loads on their devices.

What is the host’s uptime?

Uptime measures the stability of the hosting provider in terms of how long the service stays up uninterrupted.

Ideally, the uptime should be at 100%, but that is not realistic. The target is to get as close as it can get to 100%.

Hosting providers who promise an uptime upwards of 99% would best fit our selection. Preferably, go for a web host hitting 99.99% uptime.

Of course, they may not be the cheapest. But the consistency they give you may be worth the extra dollars.

How robust is their customer support?

Inevitably, you will need help with the blog.

Therefore, you would occasionally need customer support. The question now is would you write to customer support in the summer and get their reply in the winter?

Definitely, the responsiveness of customer support is a crucial parameter when choosing your hosting provider for your blog.

The best case scenario is to go for hosting providers whose customer support would take minutes to get back to you on your queries.

They should be multiple channels for reaching customer support, from phone to email to live chat on their website.

Also, the technical support team should be available 24/7 at your beck and call. They should be open to collaborating with your developers and providing helping documentation when needed.

How much does the hosting cost?

Now, everyone gets attentive once money is mentioned. Well, that is the power of money. You want a hosting provider that balances premium service with affordability.

Different providers operate different packages for their hosting plans. Some would go as low as $1.99 per month, while others could shoot into hundreds of dollars.

How secure is the host?

Your blog needs a reasonable level of impenetrability or formidability to say. Of course, you wouldn’t like a situation where breaking into your website is an easy walk in the park for any intruder.

Your hosting provider should also put security infrastructure in place to protect sensitive and confidential information on your blog.

There are also cases of virus infection, which is prevalent with a number of platforms where the hosting providers generously share viruses like a government-sponsored Christmas cake.

We will not forget to mention that some servers are notorious for habitual shutdowns. This could be particularly devastating when such shutdowns occur during the holiday shopping season.

Now that we have established these fundamental parameters that should essentially determine your choice of a hosting provider, it is up to you to do your homework when vetting them.

Feel free to ask experienced bloggers in your niche for their opinion. If possible, they should give you recommendations.

Sudan offers scholarships to top Ugandans in science and technology

The International University of Africa has offered scholarships to Ugandans pursuing courses in science and technology. The awarding of scholarships followed Dr. Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, Uganda’s Ambassador to Khartoum’s visit to the University in a bid to strengthen the relationship with Uganda.

Ambassador Ssemuddu applauded the University for having an initial impact on his life when he first left Uganda in 1989 to study for a year in Sudan before proceeding to the University of Medina in Saudi Arabia where he studied for 18 years completing with an award of a PhD in Sharia Law and Islamic Jurisprudence.

He requested the University to continue providing opportunities to Ugandan students especially those who are highly talented and economically disadvantaged with a focus to promote Uganda’s development through science and technology education.

The scholarships that will initially be granted to the top five Ugandans in the department of Minerals Science and Petroleum Studies, Engineering, Medicine and Nursing Science were announced during the meeting by the University’s Head of External Relations, Taj Adin Bashir Niyam who informed the Ambassador of the good relationship IUA enjoys in collaborating with Makerere University Kampala (MUK) Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) and Kampala International University (KIU).

The University’s Vice Chancellor for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Professor Hatim Osman Mohammad Khair who welcomed Ambassador Ssemuddu to the International University of Africa reaffirmed the pleasant relationship between IUA with the riding bilateral relations between Sudan and Uganda which resulted in many Ugandan students being awarded scholarships to study at the institution.

He said the university has a total of 120 Ugandan students currently pursuing their studies in different faculties and that Ugandan students are among the best performing and well-disciplined at the University. He further noted that many of the Ugandan students who graduated from the International University of Africa are doing very well in their individual lives while positively impacting societies wherever they live and work.

It was all tears of joy when Ambassador Dr. Ssemuddu came face to face with one of the long-serving professors, Dr Muhammad Abdulmaruf Mahjub, a teacher who taught him way back in 1989 while still a teenager and is still lecturing at the same University and he is the current Dean of Students Affairs.

Ambassador Ssemuddu used the opportunity to meet and encourage Ugandan students after his meeting with University Administration.

Nearly 40 million children dangerously susceptible to growing measles threat

Baby being immunized

Measles vaccination coverage has steadily declined since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, a record high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine dose: 25 million children missed their first dose and an additional 14.7 million children missed their second dose, a joint publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports. This decline is a significant setback in global progress toward achieving and maintaining measles elimination and leaves millions of children susceptible to infection.

In 2021, there were an estimated 9 million cases and 128 000 deaths from measles worldwide. Twenty-two countries experienced large and disruptive outbreaks. Declines in vaccine coverage, weakened measles surveillance, and continued interruptions and delays in immunization activities due to COVID-19, as well as persistent large outbreaks in 2022, mean that measles is an imminent threat in every region of the world.

“The paradox of the pandemic is that while vaccines against COVID-19 were developed in record time and deployed in the largest vaccination campaign in history, routine immunization programmes were badly disrupted, and millions of kids missed out on life-saving vaccinations against deadly diseases like measles,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Getting immunization programmes back on track is absolutely critical. Behind every statistic in this report is a child at risk of a preventable disease.”

The situation is grave: measles is one of the most contagious human viruses but is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. Coverage of 95% or greater of 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine is needed to create herd immunity in order to protect communities and achieve and maintain measles elimination. The world is well under that, with only 81% of children receiving their first measles-containing vaccine dose, and only 71% of children receiving their second measles-containing vaccine dose. These are the lowest global coverage rates of the first dose of measles vaccination since 2008, although coverage varies by country.

Urgent global action needed

Measles anywhere is a threat everywhere, as the virus can quickly spread to multiple communities and across international borders. No WHO region has achieved and sustained measles elimination. Since 2016, 10 countries that had previously eliminated measles experienced outbreaks and reestablished transmission.

“The record number of children under-immunized and susceptible to measles shows the profound damage immunization systems have sustained during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky. “Measles outbreaks illustrate weaknesses in immunization programs, but public health officials can use outbreak response to identify communities at risk, understand causes of under-vaccination, and help deliver locally tailored solutions to ensure vaccinations are available to all.”

In 2021, nearly 61 million measles vaccine doses were postponed or missed due to COVID-19-related delays in immunization campaigns in 18 countries. Delays increase the risk of measles outbreaks, so the time for public health officials to accelerate vaccination efforts and strengthen surveillance is now. CDC and WHO urge coordinated and collaborative action from all partners at global, regional, national, and local levels to prioritize efforts to find and immunize all unprotected children, including those who were missed during the last two years.

Measles outbreaks illustrate weaknesses in immunization programs and other essential health services. To mitigate risk of outbreaks, countries and global stakeholders must invest in robust surveillance systems. Under the Immunization Agenda 2030 global immunization strategy, global immunization partners remain committed to supporting investments in strengthening surveillance as a means to detect outbreaks quickly, respond with urgency, and immunize all children who are not yet protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.
