Shs200m up for grabs in Standard Chartered Bank’s ‘Earn more with SC Mobile’ Campaign

Standard Chartered Bank Uganda has launched “Earn More with SC Mobile” campaign where clients will get cash rewards for opening an account with them.

The two month ‘cash-back’ promotion will see individual banking customers who open new accounts win up to Shs 200 million over the campaign period.

City tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia has revealed that keeping money in the bank is good but instead advised that investment in areas like real estate could be better ways of wealth growth.

“Real estate is one of the safest businesses one can ever have even if there is a biting inflation. over years, your building or land will remain and grow. Plan right for your projects even if its agriculture, keeping money in the bank is not a good idea. Invest your money but plan it right” Sudhir told the audience that attended Uganda Revenue Authority Bomba business.

The City tycoon was one of the selected keynote speakers at the Uganda Revenue Authority’s third edition of the ‘e-bomba ya business summit.

Mr Ruparelia presented a topic, ‘Real Estate as a business’ at the summit scheduled for Friday, October 22.
Mr Ruparelia is the founder of Ruparelia Group, one of Uganda’s largest conglomerates. The company owns a commercial bank, a string of hotels and country clubs and more than 200 commercial properties.

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on October 15 started the third edition of the e-bomba ya business summits.

The month-long virtual engagements seek to equip business owners with financial growth skills and knowledge to foster business sustenance and voluntary compliance.

According to URA, the month-long virtual engagements are designed to educate business owners about financial growth and voluntary compliance, and they’ve been combined with skills to help organizations succeed in the new normal.

The first episode of the summits focused on survival through the pandemic with deep conversations on business financing and alternative skills adoption by sectors grossly affected by the #Covid-19.

The discussants were Private Sector Foundation Uganda’s Ruth Biyinzika, the Managing Director Centenary Bank Fabian Kasi and Pricewaterhousecoopers Crystal Kabajwara moderated by NBS Television’s Mildred Tuhaise.

The first Bomba Ya Business summits attended by hundreds of business people were held at Kololo independence grounds but due to the pandemic, the summits have since gone virtual.

Uganda Child Cancer Foundation to launch Cancer Awareness Podcast

The Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF) is set to launch a new podcast aimed at raising awareness  about Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The podcast will be available on Youtube, Spotify, Audiomark among other streaming channels

Dubbed LIVE IT UP Podcast, the podcast will focus on lessons, life and survivorship with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). It has been made possible through a partnership with The Tribe UG and the Uganda Cancer Institute.

In Uganda, according to the 2014 NCD survey, 33% of annual deaths are attributed to the five leading NCDs; cardio-vascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Mental Health and Substance Abuse. NCDs kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. (According to the World Health Organization, WHO).

Despite these weary statistics, a great deal of people have battled these diseases and been cured. It takes us all together to reduce the cancer burden and other NCDs to zero.

The Live It UP Podcast promises to be a platform to share knowledge that will help people make better health and lifestyle choices.

“UCCF is proud to bring The Live It Up Podcast to the world for the first time so as to ease understanding of NCD prevention and control through dialogue with health workers,policy makers, survivors & caretakers sharing experiences on living with NCD. We hope this podcast enhances survivorship and initiates conversations leading to advocacy and increase in knowledge on Non communicable diseases,” a statement from UCCF reads.

According to the statement from UCCF, the podcast will kickstart on Tuesday October 26th 2021 and will feature oncologists, civil society and stakeholders in cancer care in Uganda. It will be available on Youtube, Spotify, Audiomack, Apple podcasts and others.

It will be hosted by Brandy Valentine featuring guests like Dr. Jackson Orem, ED Uganda Cancer Institute, Dr. Noleb Mugisha, Dr. Joyce Kambugu Balagadde of Uganda Cancer Institute, Paul Ebusu of Uganda Cancer Society among other opinion leaders.

The podcast according to officials from UCCF will cover topics to do with what Cancer in general is, Cancers in children, how civil society is playing a role in the fight against cancer, the role of media in the cancer fight, among others.

“We hope to reach out to as many people as possible so that they become aware of what cancer is, where to get treatment, how to reduce the risk of getting cancer but also covering the journey of Uganda Cancer Institute,” officials added.

UCCF supports children and young people suffering from cancer in Uganda, by providing direct treatment and social support to children made vulnerable by limited resources, and advocates for cancer control and management.

UCC directs 11 TV stations to air gossip programmes between 10pm and 5am

The Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) has directed 11 TV stations to switch their adult-themed gossip programmes from evening hours to between 10 pm and 5 am if they wish to keep them on air.

This followed a meeting between UCC officials and representatives of eleven television stations at the Commission head office in Bugolobi on 7th October 2021.

In a letter dated 18th October 2021 to all TV stations, Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, the Ag. Executive Director of UCC said stations should ensure that their programmes comply with the Minimum Broadcasting Standards.

The affected programmes, known for broadcasting mostly gossip and celebrity news, are: NBS TV’s Uncut Sabula and Uncut Kalakata, Spark TV’s Live Wire, Urban TV’s Short Circuit Sonsomola, ABS TV’s Evening Zone, Baba TV’s Poko Poko, and BBS TV’s Roundabout.

Others are; Dream TV’s Tik Taka Sesetura, Kingdom TV’s Kapyaki, STV’s Select E-Buzz, BTM TV’s Access, and Top TV’s Kachumbali.

During the meeting, it was brought to the attention of the invited station managers, producers and presenters that members of the public had raised concerns about the programmes for violating Minimum Broadcasting Standards.

Whereas the TV stations agreed to address compliance of their programmes, the Commission has not observed any improvement in the nature and quality of the programmes, hence the action taken.

Having reviewed and investigated the nature of the content, the Commission observed that the programmes contain adult content, sexual innuendos and profanity, with the potential to disturb and harm some members of the public, especially children.

“The presenters of the programmes often appear on air when dressed indecently in skimpy outfits. The language and statements used by the presenters and guests during the programmes are often abusive, demeaning, and derogatory and contain unsubstantiated claims against different personalities,” UCC said.

The regulator also said the programmes often contain inaccurate, misleading and unverified content, which often defames other individuals and the content in the programmes often invades the privacy of individuals, contains unbalanced reporting, and denies the persons reported against the right of response or an opportunity to reply against the allegations made against them during the programs.

“To protect children and adults who find the content objectionable, the Commission directed the stations to stop broadcasting the programmes during the watershed period (5.00 am – 10.00 pm). The move is in line with the Uganda Communications Act 2013 and Regulation 28 of the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations 2019,” she said in a letter to all TVs.

She said: “If the stations wish to continue broadcasting the said programmes after the watershed period, the Ag. Executive Director advised, they must “institute deliberate measures to ensure that the content broadcast during the said programmes complies with the Minimum Broadcasting Standards, the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations 2019, and other laws including but not limited to the Data Protection and Privacy Act 2019, and the Computer Misuse Act 2011.”

Failure to comply with the directive would attract appropriate regulatory sanctions, including possible suspension of the station’s broadcasting license in accordance with Section 41 of the Uganda Communications Act 2013.

Kentim partners with Rotary to skill Kampala youths

Kentim University Uganda has partnered with Kasangati Rotary club and Satellite Rotary Club of Kyanja Metropolitan, Young Innovators and agri-preneurs centre to train youth in Agriculture value addition.

The training will help to address unemployment through hands-on training in the country. The training will be held in various cohorts with the pilot one of youth starting on 15th November 2021.

President Rotary club of Kasangati Paul Nampala was last week recognised as a rotarian who recruited the biggest number of Rotarians in the entire rotary District. He has been keen at bringing new Innovations in the club.
The National Youth Coordinator Miss Desire Muhooza welcomed the initiative as timely and thanked Rotary International for thinking about the youth.”It’s a timely intervention and it will help our youth to create jobs. We thank Rotary for the initiative,” said Muhooza.

Kentim provides Knowledge and skills to farmers to do farming as business through various on-farm training programs in agriculture along the entire value chain for small and medium scale enterprises.

Through its Business arm, Kentim Ventures Limited, the university has since worked with or partnered with various Embassies, government agencies, Private sector partners and International companies to train and equip farmers in the country in different Agriculture Value chains.

Speaking earlier today during stakeholders meeting at Kentim boardroom in Kyanja, Dr. Aggrey Kyobuguzi, the founder and CEO Kentim Group said; “We Carry-out practical training using various demonstration farms in collaboration with our partners across the country”.

“We train farmers how to add value on all products that are not eaten raw for example Making Wine, Yoghurt Making, Cheese Making, Chocolate, Tomato Sauce processing and Wine Processing,” he added.

“We have been engaged in equipping youth and women in different regions of Uganda with both technical and soft skills in various Agricultural enterprise value chains like Dairy, Poultry, Piggery, Apiary, Nursery bed management and various crop enterprises,” Dr Aggrey Kyobuguzi asserted.

Established in 2014, the institution offers short courses, certificates and diplomas. In March 2020 Kentim University (Project) was accredited as an assessment centre by Directorate of Industrial training (DIT) under ministry of Education to conduct competency based assessment in line with Uganda Vocational Qualifications Framework (UVQF).

Kentim University Uganda Limited/ Kentim University Project hosts Kentim School of health sciences,Kentim School of Agro-Vet Studies,Department of Business & Vocational studies and Centre (under Makerere BusinessSchool and Innovations centre) for Innovations and Bio-Economy that links Innovators and researchers to development partners who help them commercialize their Innovations.

The institutes and schools are independently registered and their students sit National Examinations set by their respective examining bodies.

Kentim University Uganda Limited was established as a limited liability company that among other things handles training and consultancy in the line of Agribusiness and Education.

The LOIA allows Kentim University Uganda Limited to operate as Kentim University Project and among other things to establish partnerships, develop infrastructure and human resources. The university offers diplomas in Catering, public administration, social work, social administration and business administration.

Assailants attack MPs Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana’s Lawyer ahead of hearing of their bail applications

Unidentified group of armed men have reportedly attacked Kampala District Woman MP Shamim Malende as she made her way to Masaka for the hearing of fellow NUP legislators Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya’s bail applications.

Malende is one of the lawyers representing Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and Makindye West legislator Allan Ssewayanya. The MPs are facing murder, attempted murder and terrorism charges in connection to the recent machete hackings in the Greater Masaka area where nearly 30 people were killed.

Malende revealed this morning that while driving to Masaka, she was accosted by a group of people who deflated her car tyres and left her stranded on the road.

“I have been attacked by unknown people on my way to Masaka court for the bail application of Hon Ssegirinya and Hon Allan Ssewanyana and my car tyres deflated,” she said on Facebook.

She however shared the revelation on social media along with pictures of her deflated Toyota Harrier and the same vehicle was involved in a collision late last month, while being chased by security personnel as she tried to make off with MP Ssegirinya, who had just been released from Kigo Prison.

URA collects Shs 4.5 trillion in the first quarter of 2021/22 financial year

The Commissioner General (CG) of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) John Musinguzi has revealed that the tax body collected net revenue of Shs 4.5 trillion in the first quarter of 2021/22 financial year.

The growth in revenue is attributed to URA’ administrative initiatives like arrears management which resulted in a revenue recovery of Shs 322.63 Billion. Having achieved 14.99% growth in revenue collection URA is expected to collect Shs 22.3 trillion in the FY 2021/22. The projection is Shs 3.1 trillion over and above last year’s revenue collections.

Speaking at URA Headquarters, Mr. Musinguzi said the domestic revenue collections stood at Shs 2.6 trillion and hence registering a growth of 8.11 percent (Shs 199.10 billion) compared to last financial year.

“URA will continue to implement domestic revenue mobilization strategies like; upgrading e-tax system to accommodate task at nation level, upgrading the URA data center, procurement of scanners, electronic cargo and driver trucking systems (RECDTS).”

At least 74% of the revenue was generated from the top five sectors during the first quarter of FY 2021/22. The wholesale and retail trade sector had the biggest contribution, which amounted to Shs 1.4 trillion.

He said over 65,666 new taxpayers were added to the taxpayer register in the first quarter of the financial year. By the end of September 2021, the taxpayer register had a total of 1,849,159 taxpayers.

“At URA guided by the three core values of Patriotism, Integrity and Professionalism, we pledge to mobilize enough revenue for national development in the most transparent and efficient manner,” he said.

The tax body revealed that customs revenue collections stood at Shs 1.9 trillion against a target of Shs 2 trillion registering a growth of 8.88 percent (Shs 152.14 billion) compared to last financial year.

The tax body also launched the Brailled Starter Pack to ease access of Tax literature to the visually impaired making it the first Ugandan organization to use this technology for tax information dissemination.

UPDF soldier arrested with Kagame’s guard missing for four years

The family of a Ugandan soldier who was arrested while in company of Lt Joel Mutabazi, the former bodyguard of Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame in 2013 says he has been missing for the last four years.

Cpl Abdul Khalim Mulindwa witnessed the arrest of Lt Mutabazi who was later handed over to Rwanda where he is serving life sentence over terrorism charges.

Cpl Mulindwa was also arrested by the police and held at Kira police before he was later released and resumed his work.

But his wife Erinah Nansubuga told Eagle Online that he went missing on February 17, 2018 after he got a call to report to work in Mbuya.

“It was a Saturday and he received a call to go to the office. He didn’t return that night. I waited for days and he never returned. I even sent him a WhatsApp message on Tuesday the following week. The message showed he had read it but the following day on Wednesday, the phone went off,” she said.

He had witnessed the kidnap of Lt Mutabazi and would have been a witness against the police officers who were arrested for kidnapping the former guard of the Rwandan president but he was kidnapped.

The officers who were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of Lt Mutabazi included Commandant of Police Professional Standard Unit, Senior Commissioner of Police Joel Aguma, Senior Superintendent of Police Nixon Agasirwe, former commander of Police Special Operations, Sgt Abel Tumukunde under the Flying Squad, Assistant Superintendent of Police Magada under Crime Intelligence and Faisal Katende under the Flying Squad.

After the extradition of Lt Mutabazi, Aguma was suspended for the irregular extradition of Kagame’s bodyguard.

Man sentenced to 3 years in prison for defrauding tourists

The Chief Magistrates Court in Entebbe presided over by Her Worship Stella Akwong convicted and sentenced Godfrey Paul Mpamu to 36 months in jail and payment of Shs 19.8 million for the offense of obtaining money by false pretense.

On August 30th 2021, Uganda Wildlife Authority receive complaints from five tourists who claimed that they paid Mpamu of WildPaw Safaris Euros 3000 and USD 2000 to secure them Gorilla tracking permits in Bwindi impenetrable National Park. They further alleged that Mpamu disappeared with the money and abandoned them in the vehicle which he has used to transport them to the park.

Mpamu was arrested by Police on 10th October 2021 and arraigned in court on 15th October 2021. He was remanded to Kitalya Prison until 20th October when he was sentenced upon his own plea of guilty.

Uganda Wildlife Authority’s welcomed the conviction and warned the public against participation in criminal activities of defrauding tourists adding that abandoning tourists in the park not only puts the authority in an embarrassing situation but also dents the image of destination Uganda.

The public has been advised to always verify with Uganda Tourism Board and Association of Uganda Tour operators for the authenticity of the tour operators they deal with before extending payments to them.
