#Covid-19: Makerere University Health Minister calls for mass vaccination of students

Makerere-University

Makerere University Guild Health Minister Ssewanyana Nelson has petitioned the administration calling for lobbying and mass vaccination of students.

According to Ssewanyana, the University administrators in partnership with the University Hospital can safely lobby for doses for all students. He said that they can anticipate and plan for safe reopening of the university by setting up a functioning strategy to acquire vaccines from the government.

“We appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of the University staff, medical students and Students’ with disabilities. We therefore believe that now, the strategy can be modified and ensure that all our students can be a priority and be vaccinated as soon as possible,” part of the letter reads.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and closure of schools in March  2020, academic activities at the mighty University and other institutions of learning have negatively affected, leaving many students uncertain about their studies.

Recently,  the minister of health Jane Ruth Aceng said government committed to secure 45 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines with 9 million of Johnson and Johnson vaccine and 18 million of Sinorpharm vaccine expected to arrive in September and October respectively.

The government is currently conducting a mass Covid-19 vaccination campaign for all teachers.

Court sets date for cross examination of MP Paul Nsubuga’s Mother

MP Paul Nsubuga

The hearing of the electoral petition challenging the election of Busiro North MP Paul Nsubuga kicks off next week.

In February, Edgar Lubadde, ran to court challenging the election of Nsubuga on grounds that he lacked the requisite academic qualifications to contest for that seat. Lubadde avers that Nsubuga’s real name is Peter Mukalazi and his traceable academic journey ended at Primary Leaving Examinations-PLE.

Appearing before Kampala High Court Judge Winfred Nabisinde, Court fixed the hearing of the petition for 31 August and 1st September to determine the ground of alleged lack of education where a number of witnesses including Paul Nsubuga’s mother Agnes Nabawanuka will be examined among other witnesses.

Justice Nabisinde declined the new evidence that was presented to the court by Edgar Lubadde the loser in the Busiro North Parliamentary elections who accuses Busiro North MP Paul Nsubuga of Identity theft. The judge ruled that the new evidence of forgery of nomination forms was being smuggled into court, yet it was not pleaded anywhere in the petition.

Nsubuga has since said that that he was born and baptized as Peter Mukalazi and at birth, he was described as the son of the late Mathias Kibuuka and Agnes Nabawanuka the same names he used for PLE in the year 2002 at Bukerere St. Charles Lwanga.

However, Nsubuga states that later his mother told him of his true father was the late Charles Mbabali who was a soldier in UPDF and when he was introduced to the family of the late Mbabali, he was named Paul Nsubuga a name he used to re-sit for Primary Leaving Examinations in 2003 at Ssentema Catholic Primary School under the index number 64281/035” all which is supported by an affidavit.

Rotary Uganda announces Rwenzori mineral water as sponsor of 2021 Rotary Cancer Run

Catherine Gita, the Human Resource Director at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda and Charles Odaga, the Chairman of Rotary Cancer Run 2021 during the sponsorship announcement today

Coca-Cola Beverages has joined hands with Rotary Uganda as a sponsor of the 2021 Rotary Cancer Run slated for Sunday, 29th August. Coca-Cola Beverages Africa will hydrate the runners with 800 cartons of Rwenzori Pure Natural Mineral water that will be accessed from the different water points by the runners and also distribute sanitizer packs as part of the safety protocols.

The Rotary Cancer Run 2021 is marking its 10th Anniversary in Uganda and targets a collection of Shs1billion towards the alleviation of cancer in Uganda. To further commemorate the 10th anniversary, the celebrations will continue for another nine days after the official run.

Speaking at the event to announce their sponsorship, Catherine Gita, the Human Resource Director at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda commended the Rotary Cancer Run for their 10-year dedication to rid Uganda of this ailment and implored everyone to participate.

“Our heritage in Uganda is not just pegged to being a symbol of refreshing hydration; it also includes decades of humanitarian causes either initiated or sponsored by us. It is therefore second nature for us to be standing here with Rotary Uganda and showing support by handing over Rwenzori Pure Natural Mineral Water for the runners to remain hydrated and steady while on their running routes. I encourage all of us to participate in this worthy cause. Our employees and their families will be encouraged to run come Sunday.”

Speaking at the event, Charles Odaga, the Chairman of Rotary Cancer Run 2021, called upon the public to join the worthy cause.

“I invite everybody to participate because we have all been affected by cancer in our communities. Cancer is a huge problem in this country and the world over. Through this initiative, we are providing spaces that will help with the treatment and management of cancer. After the construction of the 36 bed Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital, we embarked on a much more ambitious project of bringing high-tech cancer treatment machinery into the country. The 2021 cancer run seeks to raise funds for the construction of bunkers needed for installation of linear accelerators at Nsambya Hospital by 2023,” he said.

According to a recent Uganda Cancer Institute management report, the number of cancer cases handled annually at the facility had doubled over the last five years, with children contributing 10 per cent of the new cases. The number of patients handled in 2015 stood at 4,000 but in 2020, it shot up to 7,400 and it is expected to rise further according to Dr. Nixon Niyonzima, the head of research at UCI. The increase is coming from high numbers of women presenting with cervical and breast cancer, men with prostate cancer, cases of lymphoma in children, among others.

“Thank you, Rotary Uganda, for continuing to drive this initiative despite the COVID-19 pandemic. We know how important it is for Ugandans and Ugandans dealing with cancer. We admire the values that Rotary lives by: Service, Integrity, Diversity, Fellowship and Leadership all of which mirror Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, Uganda’s values, in many ways,” noted Catherine Gita.

“At CCBA we believe in leadership, collaboration, integrity, accountability, passion, diversity, and quality so as we stand here together, we are speaking the same language. Our employees will get involved because we, with you, are joined at the hip to do what we can to help our communities and save the lives of Ugandans. The Uganda Rotary Cancer Run is a great opportunity for our people to physically support and prove that we are in this together,” she concluded.

The Rotary Cancer Run (RCR) started in 2012 as one of the major fundraising vehicles of Uganda Rotary Cancer Programme. It’s held annually to raise funds intended to bridge the gap in the fight against cancer. The government would need at least $5 million (18 billion shillings) to put up a specialized facility where all types of cancers can be treated within the country as opposed to going abroad where it’s more expensive.

Mountains of the Moon University staff strike over gov’ts delay to takeover

Mountains of the Moon University

The staff of the Mountains of The Moon University have laid down their tools following government’s delay to takeover of the institution.

In 2015, the university Chancellor wrote to President Museveni requesting government takeover the institution due low income and high staff development expenditures. Later on, the government welcomed the idea and promised to take it up, however according to the staff at the university this has taken long.

The staff based their strike on pending promises made by the government to transform the university into a public Institution. They guaranteed not to resume teaching until the transition Task force has addressed the transition process.

“We have a number of grievances as we are much disappointed by the so many empty promises, the lack of Transition Task Force to prioritize staff in the takeover by government and taking staff for granted,” the lecturers revealed in their petition.

The industrial action has left more than 2,000 students stranded and confused with no hope of completing their semester sooner since online teaching and learning processes have also been suspended by the aggrieved lecturers.

The University has a number of 117 teaching and non-teaching staff, 17 Deans and Heads of department.
