Museveni urges traders to adopt import substitution and export promotion for Uganda to prosper

President Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has urged traders to adopt import substitution and export promotion if the country is to realise tangible economic progress. Museveni said during the inauguration of the Presidential CEO Forum (PFC).

“If you want the country to grow, you need to look at what business you are doing. Does it bring blood here or does it suck blood and take it out? That is the problem I used to have with KACITA. Their business was importing. They even reached the extent of importing wigs. The main message is, please minimize and eliminate importing,” he said.

The Presidential CEO Forum is a direct and adequate link between the private sector leadership, CEO’s from corporate institutions and government executives with the aim of contributing to the National Development Agenda.

“Among those economic actors, there are those who import, not importing raw materials or inputs but finished goods. I would like to discourage these and gradually convert them to actors who make things from here,” he said.

“A scientist is not an observer but an actor in the economy. Science is the basis of modernisation. You must go to higher-level technology so that we protect ourselves but also make money. Foreigners have been making money out of germs for a long time, we should get money from the pathogenic economy,” he said.

Mr. Museveni appreciated the value in having business forums like PCF which he said help government in policy formulation. He directed that government departments such as the Prime Minister’s office and the Ministry of Finance should always consult them before formulating policies.

He said the government will in turn facilitate the business community with the necessary infrastructure such as roads, cheap electricity, railway and reduce the cost of money through Uganda Development Bank to lower the cost of doing business in the country. He said that schools and technical colleges should also step in to provide necessary skills that are needed to do business.

The Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja urged the CEOs to share the challenges that affect them while doing their business. She said some young people want to get rich faster than the businesses that employ them.

“I would like to ask the CEOs to report the corrupt tendencies of government officers who deal with them,” she said.

The Chairperson Presidential CEO Forum, Ms. Barbra Mulwana said the inauguration of the Presidential CEO Forum marks a significant milestone within the private sector fraternity to have access to championing the government’s agenda towards fostering the social economic transformation and development of Uganda.

Ms. Mulwana said that the PCF will deliver on its vision through three key initiatives that include fostering the social economic transformation agenda in all policy conversations that are to administer private sector participation, develop a well profiled and vetted data Bank of Ugandan CEO’s and compliment government with practical interventions on economic recovery, entrepreneurship growth and value addition that will enhance home- engineered industrialisation.

The team assured the President of their commitment to soldier on in the war for economic prosperity. They said they are ready to join hands with the government to fully liberate Uganda on the economic front.

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon. Mattia Kasaija and various CEOs from the public and private sector.

The US said; “Uganda has once again demonstrated a willingness to play its part in matters of international concern. We commend its efforts and those of the local and international organizations in Uganda who are providing humanitarian support in partnership with the Government of Uganda for these evacuees from Afghanistan.”

The country is expected to host 2000 refugees from Afghanistan. The refugee’s bills will be catered for by the American government for a period of three months. Unlike other asylum seekers, the Afghans will not go to refugee camps but will be hosted in various hotels in the country.

Coca-Cola Beverages donates Tuk-Tuk motorcycles to distributors affected by #Covid-19 lockdown

Winners recieving their Tuk-Tuks at Coca-Cola Namanve today

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda has donated Tuk-Tuk motorcycles to 14 distribution stockists affected by Covid-19 lockdown. The 14 business partners were selected through a competitive process designed to ensure that the faster growing businesses in their segment do not falter in the wake of the COVID-19 disruptions.

The winners include; Nalukwago Florence, HJM Traders, Kenstie, Yasin Bukenya, Assimwe James, Ronnie Kasangaki, Beskom enterprises, Kampe Felix, JB Kijaguzo, Turyazayo Betty and Niwamanya Junior

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa officials said the private sector had a key role to play in supporting each other to emerge stronger from the impact of COVID-19 and the lockdown period.

“COVID-19 has affected all of us, but we cannot let the disease keep us down. We must do everything we can to thrive and emerge stronger and we cannot do so on our own. We have said time and again that we must focus on our person which includes our business partners as key stakeholders. Everything we do to support them will support us and the Ugandan economy,” said Sales Director, Mrs. Flavia Nabaasa.

Mrs. Nabaasa was officiating at a ceremony handing over Tuk-Tuk motorcycles to 14 distribution stockists, as tools of trade to make it easier for them to accelerate their business delivery with agility while meeting COVID-19 SOPs.

“We encourage innovative methods of speeding up business delivery, and in Kampala Tuk-Tuks is a good example of this. In this new period more people are spending time at home, so we know that Tuk-Tuks will make it easier for our trade partners to service the trade that goes right into people’s homes. This is one way we can support business partners to recover faster in the trade,” she added.

“We are happy that we have the opportunity to be supportive and show how we value our partners. We encourage more businesses in Uganda to reach out and support growing businesses and SMEs. That is how the economy will grow faster if we all play part in supporting each other.  Many of the SMEs have no access to any economic stimulus programme from the government, so we should not make them wait for that,” Nabaasa said.

After the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda supported business partners directly in stock by replacing drinks that had expired during the months’ long lockdown.

“This is what we mean by Customer Obsession, one of our commitments in 2021. We will prioritize our customers’ needs and find many ways of supporting them so we can win together in the marketplace. This is important for their employees, and all their families, and translates into the entire economy of Uganda benefiting. If all businesses do this we will all win,” Nabaasa said.

As a company, CCBA continues to support a value chain that employs over 500,000 people. This investment in any customer or business partner provides value and determination for many Ugandans down the line; this will always remain a clear goal for CCBA in Uganda.

JB Kijaguzu who was among the winners had this to say: “Thank you very much Coca-Cola for remembering us during this Covid-19 session which has disrupted our businesses. With this, we shall be able to transport the products to every area thereby boosting our businesses. Being part of the winners has strengthened my zeal to work even harder.”

Fred Kabaseke who has been in the retail business for 25 years says that the Tuk- Tuk will ease movement and transportation of his products to his customers.

MPs urged to ensure gender and equity compliance while processing bills and budgets

Mathias Mpuuga

Members of Parliament have been urged to appreciate the role of the Gender and Equity Certificate in processing bills and budgets.

According to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, this is enshrined in the Public Finance Management Act, 2015 that made it mandatory for all ministries and agencies to incorporate gender and equity into planning and budgeting processes.

He adds that the action of issuing a certificate of gender compliance is expected to increase gender responsiveness of public expenditure.

“Social and economic parity can only be achieved when Members of Parliament are knowledgeable of the social gaps in communities and ably address them,” Mpuuga said.

The Leader of the Opposition these remarks while officiating at the orientation of selected Committees of Parliament on gender and equity planning and budgeting, as a development approach to realising socio-economic transformation of Uganda.

The Committees included the Equal Opportunities Committee of Parliament and the Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development Goals.

The Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Hon. Safia Nalule Juuko said that the Parish Development Model can succeed if all Ugandans are involved.

She added that achieving equal opportunities for all Ugandans takes time, and called on Parliament and ministries to consider the concerns of struggling people, through affirmative action.

“We are glad that the efforts we have put into equity over the last 20 years are paying off. Three blind students performed exceptionally well in the recent exams, and this this attributed to the longtime advocacy put in for persons with disability,” Nalule said.

Hon. Judith Alyek, the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Committee pledged to champion gender and equity planning and budgeting.

She added that the merging of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) with the Uganda Human Rights Commission will limit resource allocation and implementation of the compliance.

“The certificates of Gender and Equity Compliance in budgeting have been offered by the Equal Opportunities Commission. Where shall we get them from now, if we do away with the Commission?” Alyek said.

The merger of the two bodies comes in light of Government’s plan to merge some agencies.

UNBS urges the business community to embrace Systems Certification for growth

UNBS Deputy ED-Standards, Ms. Patricia Bageine Ejalu

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has called upon the business community to embrace Management Systems implementation and Certification to facilitate growth of their businesses.

The remarks were made during an online stakeholder engagement organized by UNBS to equip business owners with Management System standards and skills to better their businesses.

“Management Systems Certification gives you a step by step process from the raw materials/service inception to the end product/service delivery to make sure the entire system is under control and the quality of your end product/service is not affected,” said Ms. Patricia Bageine Ejalu, the Deputy Executive Director in charge of Standards at UNBS.

Ms. Ejalu also hinted on the requirements for Management Systems Certification for businesses looking to do business beyond the Ugandan borders to promote Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU).

“Although management systems certification in Uganda is voluntary, countries we export to especially in Europe and America now require compulsory Quality and Food Safety Systems certification. So we are moving from just assuring the quality of products to assuring the quality of the entire Management Systems for both products and services.” Ms. Ejalu noted.

A Management System is the way an organisation executes its interrelated processes, functions, and activities while transforming its inputs into outputs in order to achieve its objectives like product or service quality and or safety, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, environmental performance, health and safety in the workplace.

In February 2019, UNBS attained accreditation to offer management system certification based on the following ISO standards: ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and ISO 22000 Food Safety Management Systems. The accreditation which is internationally recognised, is by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) which enables UNBS to support the business community in Uganda to compete favourably on the global markets

We also offer certification against a number of other standards, which include: ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) based food safety systems. It is the intention of UNBS to include these standards and many more onto the scope of accredited certification services in the coming years.

Management Systems Certification is important because it helps businesses achieve organizational goals, reduce costly errors and improve customer satisfaction. It also facilitates the marketing and growth of business more effectively, improves traceability, and allows for the growth of one’s market share in new territories. Implementation of management systems will help in creating a culture of quality and safety, and improve efficiency and productivity in Ugandan business.

Business owners are encouraged to implement Management Systems by acquiring a copy of the relevant standard(s) from the UNBS website via https://webstore.unbs.go.ug/ ,getting the necessary training (https://unbs.go.ug//content.php?src=training-calendar&pg=content ) implementing the Management System in accordance with the standards and apply for Management Systems Certification using the application form available on the UNBS website via https://unbs.go.ug .
