Man City, Chelsea eye Champions League glory in Porto

Thomas Tuchel (left) and Pep Guardiola

Blue is the colour for this year’s Champions League final, as Manchester City and Chelsea board their flights to Porto seeking to end the strangest of seasons with the biggest prize of them all.

Pep Guardiola’s men advanced to the showpiece event after dumping Paris Saint-Germain out in the semi-finals, while all-time greats Real Madrid were no match for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.

Chelsea have beaten City twice in the past six weeks – in the FA Cup semifinal and Premier League, but this is a Champions League final.

It is the third final of Europe’s elite club competition to be played between two Premier League sides, and the second in just three seasons, and so this is a match-up that underlines the strength of the cash-rich English game.

Guardiola’s name is already etched into managerial folklore, but having led Barcelona to Champions League triumphs in 2009 and 2011, he could join the elite crowd of Bob Paisley, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane with a third winners’ medal, and the 50-year-old needs no added incentive to get the job done in Portugal.

Like his adversary, Thomas Tuchel is a man who knows all about European heartache, having come so close yet so far with PSG last year.

Three defeats from four before a continental final is not exactly a recipe for success, but thankfully for Tuchel and the ever-demanding Chelsea board, Leicester’s late defeat to Tottenham Hotspur means that the Blues secured fourth spot and a route into Europe’s premier competition should their efforts in Portugal prove futile.

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea manager: “As a child, you dream of these matches and it’s like watching the moon – it’s so, so far away. Once you’re in it, you’re just in it. I don’t hesitate to say that Man. City and Bayern have been the benchmark in Europe this season and last season. We are trying to close the gap and the good thing is, in football, you can close gaps in 90 minutes.”

Josep Guardiola, Man. City manager: “We fought together and we’re in the final of the Champions League, and those are nice words. People believe it’s easy to get to the final of the Champions League. Getting to the final now makes sense of what we have done in the past four or five years. Every day these guys have been consistent and this is remarkable.”

Possible lineups

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Rúben Dias, Zinchenko; Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Gündoğan; Mahrez, De Bruyne, Foden

Chelsea: Mendy; Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rüdiger; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kanté, Chilwell; Pulišić, Werner, Mount

We are not aware of any procurement scandal involving us-EC

Mr Leonard Mulekwah, Secretary to the Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission has clarified that they haven’t received money to purchase a new permanent home planned.

The EC is reacting to social media story which alleged that plans to purchase a new home by EC were hindered by infighting between Commissioners and senior members of management.

“The Electoral Commission has noted with concern a story on a news website alleging that the process of acquisition of a new office premises has been delayed due to fights between members of the commission and management. This is factually wrong and should be treated with the contempt it deserves” The EC said in a press statement.

The EC said “It Wishes to clarify that the Ministry of Finance has indicated that they will provide funds in the forthcoming budget for financial year 2021/2022 towards the purchase of a property to house the Electoral Commission on a permanent basis. Please note that the reading of the budget is scheduled for mid-June 2021. The said funds as expected to be appropriated by parliament  will be availed by the ministry in the first quarter of the financial year 2021/2022”

EC is supposed to vacate the current headquarters by end of June this year to pave way for the construction of the flyover linking Jinja road to Entebbe road at the former clock tower. Uganda National Roads Authority tasked EC to give way and as such, EC is in the process of getting a new home.

“The said story is a gross misrepresentation of the progress of the process for relocation of the Electoral Commission headquarters and its contents are not only speculative, but are maliciously  designed to tarnish the name of the institution and the reputation of its officials”  reads the statement signed by Leonard Mulekwah, acting Secretary Electoral Commission.

Elections are over, time to work- SG Lumumba tells Ugandans

NRM SG Kasule Lumumba.

The NRM Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba has said all Ugandans at all levels should resort to their work since election period is over.

Lumumba said Ugandans exercised their right well by choosing their next president, members of parliament, district chairpersons and other leaders in elections that were largely won by the National Resistance Movement but said it is now time for them to start work.

“This electoral cycle has now come to an end. I take this opportunity to appeal to Ugandans at large but specifically to those leaders who participated in the electoral process; to now get down to hard work so as to lay a firm and strong foundation for the socio-economic transformation of the country, during this ‘kisanja’,” Lumumba said.

She challenged leaders irrespective of their political affiliation at all levels in the country, to develop mechanisms for conflict resolution; whether through mediation, reconciliation or arbitration in order to promote unity and cohesion in the country.

She added that when a county is purposefully united, the implementation of government programs for socio-economic transformation can easily be done and fast-tracked.

The NRM Secretary General congratulated the new Speaker of Parliament  Jacob Oulanyah and his deputy, Anita Among upon election to lead the 11th parliament.
The election of these two leaders is a reflection of the unity and cohesion within the National Resistance Movement. I thank H.E. the President and National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement; the NRM Central Executive Committee and the NRM Parliamentary Caucus for their role in ensuring the election of the two NRM flag bearers for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively,” she said.

She reminded the two leaders that they hold the positions in trust and on behalf of their mother party, the NRM and that they should always work to fast- track the NRM manifesto.

Lumumba urged members of the party to desist from making any inflammatory statements in the media about the election that she said might be prejudicial to the unity and cohesion of the party.

On the second wave of #Covid-19 pandemic, Lumumba appealed to Ugandans, especially the politicians involved in celebrating their victories to do so in strict compliance with the standard operating procedures as guided by the Scientists; so as not to put the people of Uganda at risk of contracting and spreading the #Covid-19 pandemic.

She also called upon the general public to continue observing standard operating procedures issued by ministry of health.

#Covid-19: Kyambogo students strike over suspension of physical lectures

Kyambogo students strike outside the senate building

Students of Kyambogo University, a Banda based university are striking a day after the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eli Katunguka, suspended physical classes.

Professor Katunguka suspended physical classes after some members of Kyambogo University tested positive of #Covid-19.

Three students from the Department of Accounting in the School of Management tested positive of #Covid-19 but the latest information coming in from students indicates that the number of students who tested positive is more than the reported.

Students who are opposing this decision have started a strike by surrounding the administration block where most of the University top managers sit and they are demanding the management to change its decision and allow them continue with physical lectures.

Other students led by John Mbazira, the Guild President are moving in Banda and other surrounding areas shouting” say no to online learning “.

Students contend that they have suffered a lot while trying to use the Online system of learning which is not working for them.

Kyambogo university introduced Open Distance and Elearning-ODel system of learning when the government closed education institutions in 2020, since then students have complained about how  ODel system has failed to work for them.

Fortunate Atuhurire a third year student says that suspending physical classes will not help in anyway and asks the administration to think about the impact of online learning to students.

Deborah Ampereza a bachelor of Accounting and Finance second year student explained that in her class, none of the students had managed to access the study materials online, and wonders why the  university keeps on insisting on using online yet it failed in first place.

Students are also striking against surcharges the university getting from students who pay their school fees after six weeks. Kyambogo has six weeks policy of paying tuition to zero balance and when six weeks are done, a late payment fee of Shs50,000 is added and it has to be paid before doing exams.

Bruce Okello a second year student of bachelors of Community Based Rehabilitation, says that since the students have been affected by the pandemic too, the university should not continue charging them this surcharges.

Professor Eli Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor explained that the ODel system is opposed by a small group of students who are just after opposing everything in the University, adding that ODel  has been there and it is a government’s measure of stopping the spread of #Covid-19.

The police together with UPDF have fought students who were protesting and the situation in University is coming back to normal.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Health, the cumulative confirmed cases are now 44,074 and 358 people have died from the deadly virus. There are currently 140 active #Covid-19 cases.

The Ministry has called upon all persons who have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and have completed between eight to twelve weeks to visit any designated vaccination health facility and receive the second and final dose.

As per the Ministry of Health guidelines, the university is now expected to trace and isolate contacts of the students who tested positive as away of slowing the spread of #Covid-19.

In his letter to all Deans and Heads of Departments, Prof. Katunguka said that many students have been coughing, however many of them declined to be tested.

“In a bid to be safe, students have to stay at home or hostels and engage in the online learning and whoever has cough or flu to go for medication,” he said.

He urged Deans and Heads of Departments to engage students through the online learning system as planned and shown on the schedule released by the Academic Registrar.

“I want all members of staff to get their vaccinations. Students should observe the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures,” he said.

According to the orders of the Ministry of Health, the administration has to identify and isolate these students to curb the spread of the virus to other students in the University.

On a sad note, students have declined to adopt online learning saying that it is expensive and a lot of tuition has been paid including the surcharges on delayed payments.

According to Akim Kiyengo Lwanga, the Kyambogo Guild Information Minister, online learning’s implementation should be a gradual process depending on the readiness of students, parents and lecturers.

“Therefore the University Council must reduce tuition or functional fees to enable student’s purchase what is needed to have online studies. We are saying no to online learning,” Kiyengo said.
