Buganda Tourism Board, UTB call for periodization of Kingdom’s tourism sites, cultural heritage and history

Mile Walk

The Buganda Heritage Tourism Board (BHTB) in partnership with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) have called on Tourism stakeholders to prioritize the Kingdom’s tourism sites, cultural heritage and traditional history.

The revelation was made during a Royal Mile walk FAM Trip which took place on Saturday. The walk started from Bulange, Mengo to the Official Palace of the King of Buganda traversing through the historic and famous tourism Royal mile road mediated by a roundabout called ‘’Ntawetwa’’ designed with super iconic monuments showcasing the rich culture of Buganda people and their diverse clan segmentations.

The Royal Mile walk was graced by Chairman of UTB Daudi Migereko, Minister for Information in Buganda Kingdom Noah Kiyimba, Kawere Richard the CEO Uganda Tourism Association, Benon Ntambi the Chairman Buganda Heritage Tourism Board (BHTB ), Mr Batenze Patrick the Head of Credit at Equity Bank and others.

Before the walk, Mr. Kiyimba launched a mini-museum at Bulange Mengo and the ‘Certificate of Completion’ for the Royal mile and Buganda tourism sites for tourists that will be visiting the spots as these will be received upon semi – completion and full completion of the visits for all tourism places and attractions in the proximity of Kampala and Buganda region at a fee of Shs10, 000.

Such sites include; Bulange Mengo, a building that has survived for over 70 years, Kasubi Tombs , Ssekabaka Kiweewa Tombs, Kabaka’s Lake, Wamala tombs, Lubiri (Kabaka’s palace), Amin’s Dungeon (Torture Chambers), Ntawetwa Roundabout, Lubaga Cathedral, Namirembe Cathedral, Old Kampala, among many more tourist attractions in Buganda.

Mr. Migereko applauded the Kingdom and Buganda Heritage Tourism Board for their call for partnership with Uganda Tourism Board towards upping up Buganda’s rich traditional culture, historical backgrounds among many more so as to create awareness to the public.

“The launch of this Royal mile walk signifies a great interest that Buganda Kingdom has towards Tourism in Uganda. There’s no place in the World that exists without people knowing their culture, norms and traditions as these are very instrumental for every tribe.” he said

“At UTB, we have been discussing a plan to ramp up Tourism post Covid-19 and justify some of the untapped key areas we need to take on as among these indicated places around Kampala. This is vital especially during such times when tourists have health concerns given the pandemic and therefore feel safe to traverse nearby places around the City’s Central Business District.” he said.

“It’s on this plea that we thought of a tour sachet around the City and therefore this royal mile walk will help us address some of things like enabling delegates that come here for conferences to take on trips around religious places like; Old Kampala, Lubaga, Kibuli, Namirembe while also visiting Namugongo and Munyonyo martyrs shrines, these places are so significant for Faith based tourism and adding Bulange Mengo, the Kabaka’s Lake and Palace to this sachet serves a great purpose as most delegates after attending the conferences whether in Munyonyo or Serena hotels enjoy city trips especially viewing of the Lake plus boat cruises as these spice up their evenings or day’’.

Allen Irene Namisango, the Head at Uganda Uncovered organisers of the Royal mile walk FAM trip lauded the Kingdom’s Heritage Tourism Board for accepting their proposal for the cause and also thanked Uganda Tourism Board for taking on the idea and partnering to add a boost to the Royal mile walk FAM trip.

Noah Kiyimba said Tourism is marketed by word of mouth however the political environment in the Country must be appealing. He also appreciated Uganda Uncovered for such meaningful arrangements that will see Buganda strengthen her Tourism as a Kingdom to tourists in Uganda and those from abroad post Covid-19.

“Buganda’s tourism for so long has been untapped.  Buganda as a Kingdom has a lot of traditional tales and rich history to sell to the World as a tourism product such as the Kabaka’s lake which is the 3rd dug by simple hoe man-made lake in the entire World but all this is less attended to,” he said.

Mr Busulwa Farouk, Head of the Marketing Committee and board member Buganda Heritage Tourism Board emphasized that there’s a lot more to learn while visiting Buganda Kingdom.

“In just 45 minutes, you can get to experience Bulange alone, get to know where the past Kings used to seat, the Parliament of Buganda, among others not forgetting the Royal mile that comprises the different sculptures bearing the origins and names of the different people in Buganda,” he said.

“The Palace alone consists of Buganda Museum which includes all items used in the traditional Buganda and former Kabakas, remains of Cars used by Kabaka Muteesa I, Iddi Amin’s dungeon that served as an Armoury but later turned into a torture chamber among many more,” he said.

UPDF starts setting up camps in DRC against ADF

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Mountain Brigade Commander Maj.Gen. Kayanja Muhanga has started overseeing the setting up of a military base in Beni North Kiva for troops ahead of their deployment against Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

The Ugandan and Congo armies are setting up an operations centre in the east of Democratic Republic of Congo for a joint offensive against Islamist.

ADF has been terrorizing civilians in the restive part of DRC and in often cases killing fishermen on Lake Albert on both sides of the two countries. DRC President Felix Tshisekedi is reported to have held talks with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni on his recent trip to Kampala during the swearing in ceremony of President Museveni.

The preparation for the offensive comes at the time when both countries are undertaking a joint venture in infrastructural development.

What President Museveni must do in this legacy term

Ivan Munguongeyo

Fellow Ugandans, it is no longer news that Yoweri Museveni was sworn in as President of the Republic of Uganda for a sixth consecutive term. Congratulations to him and I hope his last term in office will be. I have many recommendations for the President to form and maintain the country in the right direction.

My first concern is for Ugandan youth. They need more attention than they are currently receiving. If our numerous government arms will significantly reduce their excessive spending, some money can be freed up to help the long-suffering masses and their children. It is heartbreaking to learn that a large amount of money intended to boost the economy and protect it from the #COVID-19 pandemic was largely swindled by a few bloated bureaucrats. There are no proper records for the disbursement of the enormous amounts being bandied around by our top government officials.

It is simple to distribute money in easily traceable forms that can be easily reviewed and validated. However, this government prefers to do it the difficult way, leaving space for bribery and daylight robbery, eroding the public’s trust and confidence that it can champion the battle against corruption and root out corrupt elements polluting the polity. It is my hope and prayer that tales of graft and corruption become a thing of the past in this kisanja.

My second suggestion concerns employment. We can accomplish this by promoting an agricultural revolution. Almost everywhere there is arable land. We have energetic, hardworking men and women on our team. We have citizens who are brilliant, intelligent, and ambitious. All they need is a little encouragement and incentives. Those in the private sector, in addition to the government, can be of assistance. Some Ugandans I know started businesses with as little as one hundred Ugandan shillings and have seen their businesses grow by leaps and bounds. We are a hardworking, imaginative, innovative, and creative group of individuals. God has blessed us with people with talent and ability who only need to be generously supported in any small way.

We will need to develop technical and vocational education. This will better prepare our youth, making them more competitive and employable. We must invest in sports by offering training facilities, equipment, and coaches. Uganda is endowed with raw talent that must be polished and shaped for global opportunities. The same can be said for entertainment. Investing in studios and music facilities need not be prohibitively expensive. Our film, music, and comedy industries can employ thousands, if not millions, of people. Fashion is one of the industries that needs to develop quickly. We must not overlook the importance of food and beverages.

Let’s gather the experts in these fields for a brainstorming session and back them up with funding. The outcome of such an experiment would astound us. For any country pursuing progress or growth, research is the way forward. Unfortunately, both government and private sector support for research is severely lacking in Uganda. Our universities and tertiary institutions are nothing more than glorified high schools with science labs, rather than the well-equipped research centers that we desperately need.

Until we address the imbalances in our educational system and address the issues that are critical and necessary for national growth and development, we will only belong in the playground for little boys, playing with toys made for us by the big men who are making giant strides in all that they aspire to, while we are content with the toys, sweets, and pats on the head that they give us. This is not the Uganda of our forefathers and ancestors’ dreams.

Uganda is an industrial powerhouse on the verge of exploding if any of us would be less selfish and greedy. That is the Uganda that should be ecstatic about its oil output in a few years, not the parody of a country that we have now. The President took the oath of office promising to take us to the promised land. He has a limited time left in office to redeem himself and ensure a lasting legacy for himself as well as a promising future for our country.

Israel impunity generated by bigotry and guild thereof

Nelson Mandela's statue donated to Palestine by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa. The African Nobel peace laureate and international anti-Apartheid icon once declared that: "Our freedom is not complete without the freedom of the Palestinian people!"

As Germany and Austria pick sides, opting to legitimize the escalation of conflict, it surely does look as if the two nations are hoping to atone for their Nazi past by colluding with unfathomable “Israeli Apartheid” (as declared recently by Human Rights Watch), and all the impunity that Israel has enjoyed in the past 60 years since it’s creation for repeatedly violating both human rights and international law.

The indiscriminately oppressing, and heinously murdering Palestinian men, women and children for decades to come, all under the excuse of “fighting terrorism”, when in reality the entire world has seen how relentless and heartless Israeli provocation, intimidation and repression against humble innocent worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque generated Palestinian resistance.

A situation no different from what happened to the innocent Muslim worshippers who were slain mid-prayer in a vicious hate crime by convicted white supremacist terrorist Brenton Tarrant at Al Noor Mosque in ChristChurch, New Zealand on the 15th of March 2019, a day that will live in infamy for that heinous bloodbath where 51 innocent people lost their lives simply because of their faith.

CEC convenes to deliberate on parliamentary speakership race

Deputy Speaker Oulanyah and Speaker Kadaga

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has kicked off the process of getting its flag bearer for the position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

According to the Deputy Vice chairman representing Buganda region Godfrey Kiwanda, CEC will start its meeting by enacting regulations governing elections of speakers including at lower councils.

Last month, the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda petitioned the Parliamentary commission through the office of the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga asking for postponement  of the election of the speaker and deputy speaker of the 11th parliament. The election of the speaker and deputy speaker of parliament was slated to take place on 21st May, a week after the swearing in of the MPs. The swearing in of MPs kicked off today.

The hotly contested speakership race is between Rebecca Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah. Others contesting for the office of the speaker of parliament include; Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Semujju Nganda and Rakai District Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama.

Currently Kadaga and Oulanyah are in a cold war hurling insults at each other. Last month, Kadaga labeled her deputy a coward, noting that during the age limit debate Oulanyah called her and said there was something he couldn’t handle and she came in straight into fire as the Deputy ran away.

In retaliation the deputy speaker said his boss lost support and she should not be campaigning if she has support of the 300 MPs as she alleges.

Last year at a conflict resolution meeting at State House which was attended by both Kadaga, Oulanyah and other top party wigs that was presided over by Museveni, Oulanyah affirmed to the head of state that come rain or sunshine, he was going to challenge Kadaga and nobody would compel him to quit the race.

In March 2021, Kiboga district woman MP Ruth Nankabirwa was dragged into Kadaga-Oulanyah row on the floor of parliament after some members claimed that she was campaigning for the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

Nankabirwa denied the claims saying she was just reminding MPs of the 2016 CEC resolution to the effect that Kadaga was to serve only ten years and pass on the baton to Oulanyah.

Fly Emirates launches India humanitarian air bridge to transport urgent #Covid-19 relief items

emirates plane

Emirates has set up a humanitarian air bridge between Dubai and India to transport urgent medical and relief items, to support India in its fight to control the serious COVID-19 situation in the country.

Emirates will offer cargo capacity free of charge on an “as available” basis on all of its flights to nine cities in India, to help international NGOs deliver relief supplies rapidly to where it is needed.

In the past weeks, Emirates SkyCargo has already been transporting medicines and medical equipment on scheduled and charter cargo flights to India. This latest airbridge initiative takes Emirates’ support for India and for the NGO community to the next level.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates’ Chairman and Chief Executive, said: “India and Emirates are deeply connected, since our first flights to India in 1985. We stand with the Indian people and will do all we can to help India get back on its feet. Emirates has a lot of experience in humanitarian relief efforts, and with 95 weekly flights to 9 destinations in India, we will be offering regular and reliable widebody capacity for relief materials. The International Humanitarian City in Dubai is the largest crisis relief hub in the world and we will work closely with them to facilitate the movement of urgent medical supplies.”

The first shipment sent as part of the Emirates India humanitarian airbridge is a consignment of over 12 tons of multi-purpose tents from the World Health Organization (WHO), destined for Delhi, and coordinated by the IHC in Dubai.

Giuseppe Saba, CEO of International Humanitarian City, said: “His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid built the International Humanitarian City (IHC), so Dubai, in coordination with humanitarian agencies, would be able to assist communities and families, most in need – around the world. The creation of the humanitarian airbridge between Dubai and India, facilitated by Emirates SkyCargo, Dubai’s International Humanitarian City and UN agencies, to transport urgent medical and relief items, is another example of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s vision for the IHC, being brought to life. Last year over 1,292 shipments were dispatched from the IHC in Dubai, setting the standard for humanitarian response globally. We appreciate the great efforts by IHC’s partner Emirates SkyCargo establishing this humanitarian airbridge between Dubai and India in this time of need”.

The freight division of Emirates has a close partnership with IHC, developed over several years of delivering relief materials to communities across the world impacted by natural disasters and other crises. IHC will support Emirates SkyCargo in channelling relief efforts to India through the airbridge.

Following the Port of Beirut blasts in August 2020, Emirates also leveraged its expertise in humanitarian logistics to set up an airbridge to Lebanon to assist with relief efforts.

Emirates has led the aviation and air cargo industry in its efforts to help markets around the world combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The air cargo carrier has helped transport thousands of tonnes of urgently required PPE and other medical supplies across six continents over the last year by rapidly adapting its business model and introducing additional cargo capacity through its modified mini freighters with seats removed from Economy Class on Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft along with loading cargo on seats and in overhead bins inside passenger aircraft to transport urgently required materials.

In addition, Emirates SkyCargo has partnered with UNICEF and other entities in Dubai through the Dubai Vaccine Logistics Alliance, to transport COVID-19 vaccines rapidly to developing nations through Dubai. So far, close to 60 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been transported on Emirates’ flights, equating to nearly 1 in 20 of all COVID-19 vaccine doses administered around the world.

Through its scheduled cargo flights to close to 140 destinations across six continents, Emirates helps maintain unbroken supply chains for vital commodities such as medical supplies and food.

Carolyne Agudo, Head of Customer Experience, Housing Finance Bank as she visited several customers to handover specifically customized gift hampers.

Housing Finance Bank delivered in person to some of their partners across the country special presents to lighten up their Eid celebrations with their families and loved ones.

The partners were chosen across all the 17 locations of the bank and rewarded for their loyalty and unwavering support to the bank. This comes after the Managing Director and Executive Director hosting internal Muslim staff to a cossy fast-breaking dinner at Hotel Africana.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has tapered the happiness around the nation and has led people to celebrate a muted Eid-ul-Fitr. While the crisis is still ongoing, it has somewhat evolved into a ‘new normal.
