Akon concludes one week trip in Uganda as UTB tourism investment pitches to diaspora

AKON

The Senegalese-American artist and businessman AKON has concluded a one week-long trip in Uganda.

Akon, whose real name is Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, was in the country at the invitation of Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs to explore various investment opportunities in the country.

During the trip, UTB held talks with him on how to leverage his networks and celebrity status to tap into the wealthy celebrity North American travellers and African diaspora market.

During his stay, UTB CEO Lilly Ajarova hosted Akon and his wife Rozina Negusei for a familiarization trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the most visited national park, together with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is famous for the Mountain Gorilla and hosts 53% of the world’s population of gorillas. Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to over 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species.

Describing the gorilla tracking in a media interview, Akon and Rozina said it was rare, tough and beautiful at the same time. “We had an amazing time a beautiful experience. “It was amazing, I got an up-close and personal shot with the gorillas… you don’t see shots this close.” she said.

While addressing journalists in Kampala, Akon said: “I cannot believe what I have experienced while in Uganda, the kind of welcome I never knew Uganda had and I’m determined to expose how beautiful this country is to the rest of the world.”

The CEO of UTB Lilly Ajarova said; that Akon’s visit follows another February 2021 meeting between her and Akon’s wife and entertainment entrepreneur, Rozina Negusei.

“One of the key opportunities discussed with Rozina then, and again with the couple was an opportunity for a huge potential for a back-to-Africa (in this case Uganda) International Music Festival,” she said.

She said; “We also discussed marine tourism- given Uganda’s abundance of water bodies, the redevelopment of the Equator—UTB has profiled up to six areas of investment as well as the construction of especially luxury accommodation facilities in and around our 10 National Parks in addition to a favourable business environment such as government incentives, widely available and affordable labour, all, combine to make Uganda, one of the best places to visit and invest.”

Lilly said that UTB hopes to leverage the multi-platinum selling singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and actor’s celebrity and wealthy networks, first to create awareness about Uganda in the North American markets especially and subsequently influence investments inflows as well.

North American Market, that includes the United States of America and Canada, according to the just-released Uganda’s Tourist Expenditure And Motivation Survey (Tems) 2019 Report, by the tourism minister, although North America tourists constitute only 9.3% of overall tourism numbers to Uganda, they, together with European and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) were largely leisure travellers that spend between 8 to 14 nights.  Nearly one-third of all leisure visitors were much more likely to stay in either Uganda’s Safari Lodge or Tourist campsites.

In an interview with Associated Press News, an American newswire, Akon said that Uganda was rich with potential and indeed confirmed that his company was interested in and would host an international music festival in Uganda.

“Uganda is definitely a hub for investment. We’re looking to put together a huge festival here,” he said, adding: “We do want to be able to invest in the local artists. One of the reasons for the festival is to expose the local artists here in Uganda because they play a big role in East African music alongside Kenya and Rwanda and Congo as well too.”

Akon also hinted at plans to build what he called an entertainment city in Uganda.

“That is on the list of things that we are doing. That is one of the reasons why we are doing the Akon Entertainment City here; because we want to be able to focus and showcase the entertainment all throughout East Africa,” he said.

Denis Onyango retires from International football

Denis Onyango

Uganda Cranes captain and goalkeeper has announced his retirement from international football.

Onyango made his Cranes debut against Cape Verde in 2005 and retires with 79 caps for the national team. His retirement comes just days after defender Hassan Wasswa also announced he was hanging his boots on Saturday.

The custodian features for Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and in 2016, he was named Africa-based Player of the Year by CAF.

He was named Cranes captain in April 2017 following the retirement of veteran striker Geoffrey Massa.

Onyango also wrote to FUFA President, Moses Magogo notifying him and the Federation about his decision.

“This letter represents my official notice of retirement from the Uganda National Football Team, The Cranes effective April 12, 2021.” Part of the letter reads.

Onyango’s letter

Below is Onyango’s full statement on his retirement;

I sit here with tears rolling down my eyes because after a lengthy consideration I have come to the decision of retiring from international football with immediate effect.

It is a sad day in my life knowing that I will never wear the jersey of my beloved Cranes in front of passionate fans again. I will now become the number one supporter who wears the jersey watching from the stands or from home. It is through the Ugandan national team that I have grown from a boy into the man and father that I am now.

For all the success that I have enjoyed in my career I owe so much of it to the national team. It was because of my national team that I got to play against all the best players from across the continent who play in top leagues all over the world. I played at the AFCON finals because of the Cranes. The joy of being at the AFCON finals after so many years was sweet. To sing my national anthem was the greatest joy that I will ever have being the ‘proud boy’ from Uganda that I am.

I didn’t want to retire but I felt it is better to leave good memories and allow for the younger goalkeepers to compete for that jersey which I have worn with pride for 16 years. Everyone who has worked with me knows how much I enjoyed playing for the national team. My commitment and hard work were never in question. To everyone that I worked with especially coach Micho (Milutin Sredojevic) thank you for the patience, understanding and wisdom that you brought to me.

To my friends, management of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, Nsambya FC and SC Villa, teammates, managers, coaches, I say thank you. My biggest appreciation is to the fans and all the people of Uganda. I love you all. Football can never be as beautiful as it is without fans. Nothing can ever be better than captaining your national team. It was real. Salute to every Ugandan.

Makerere University introduces surcharges on delayed registration

Makerere-University

The university administration has introduced a surcharge of fifty thousand shillings (50,000Ushs) on the students’ portal for delayed registration of the semester.

Through the Academic Integrated Management System (AIMS), which is an integrated educational Management System that automates all business processes like billing, payments, curriculum amongst others, the surcharges were indicated on the students’ portal.

The letter from the University bursar written on 25th February, 2021 indicated surcharges on delayed payment of 60% of tuition by 19th March, 2021 and the deadline for free registration is 9th April, 2021, failure to do so will lead to a surcharge of 50,000Ushs.

Many of the students always register after knowing the course units that are available, and for the elective course units more so others first attend all of the options and choose later the suitable ones.

With the lecturers’s strike in the beginning of the semester, many course units have not yet been taught which has delayed students’ decision-making on registration.

“It is my understanding that no student can print out an examination permit without clearance to zero balance, so whether not or you want, one has to pay to their full dues. That should be the only deadline for students and parents to look out for the clearance to zero balance,” Judith Nalukwago, guild Aspirant urgued.

Judith Nalukwago also added that the early registration is also hindered by the regular breakdown and poor Network connection of the AIMS. Most of the time it is under maintenance this crippling the businesses in the University.

A few students are willing to match peacefully to Parliament mid this week against the unfair policy introduced by the administration that they even don’t give accountability to these surcharges.

“In the past we have resisted this theft and had it cancelled. We can have all surcharges cancelled. Through our own efforts as students,” Student (names unrevealed) said angrily.

Health workers from both public and private health facilities were the first group to receive the vaccine.

The second group will be the teachers. All teachers will be required to access vaccines from the nearest public health facility starting from HC III up to a National Referral Hospital.

The third category will be all persons above 50 years of age.
