Mohan Kiwanuka writes to his children saying they have dishonoured him

Mr. Jordan Sebuliba who has taken on his father Mohan Kiwanuka in a property row.

It has emerged that  before court finally ordered for the eviction of his children Jordan Ssebuliba Kiwanuka and siblings from  company property, their father Mohan Kiwanuka had painfully drafted an emotional letter to children.

Mr Kiwanuka who doesn’t need introduction anymore in his letter says his children had dishonoured him in their venture to grab property from him and eventual declaration that he was mentally unstable.

“I gave you the best education, and always preached to you good behaviour like respect, hard work, building for the future, modesty and avoiding wasteful living. My late mother did the same and taught you religious values too. However, you dishonoured me so much and breached my trust when under your company Lowerhill Management Limited, you joined Sebuliba in forging tenancy agreements for yourselves, and then proceeded to the court and the media harassing me, insulting and defaming me, and claiming ownership of properties you very well know belong to companies which i founded” Mr Kiwanuka wrote.

Two years down the road, court has finally found Jordan Sebuliba Kiwanuka, the errant ‘son’ to city tycoon Mohan Kiwanuka, guilty and criminally liable of a couple of offences. And the sane court, issued orders to have them thrown out of two properties he’s been occupying illegally for over ten years.

For the last 18 months, Mr. Kiwanuka has been battling for his properties which,Sebuliba  was  occupying without remitting payments to the companies that own them.

Mr. Sebuliba the estranged son of Kiwanuka failed to convince four different courts and judges to his side hence miserably losing all the cases some of which he himself had filed in pursuit to throw his father out of his hard earned wealth. Court documents available indicate that Sebuliba committed fraud vide forgery as well as abuse of office among a string of charges, in order to gift himself the company properties.

He and his other siblings went to court claiming that Kiwanuka had gifted them the ‘matrimonial’ properties but had become too enfeebled to remember, judging that the old man was allegedly suffering from dementia and other illnesses. Sebuliba further prayed to court to find his father of unsound mind and instead he Sebuliba be given management of all the family properties.

Below is Mr Mohan Kiwanuka letter in full

Mr. Riad Batabda Kiwanuka

Ms Jordana Kiwanuka Hass

Mr. Adnan Dean Kiwanuka

I have received many people sent by you requesting that I allow you to meet me and discuss family matters. Unfortunately, this has not been possible because of your decision to support and join Jordan sebuliba, who has defied the values you all grew up learning from me and other elders in the family and instead you and him have become outlaws.

I gave you the best education, and always preached to you good behaviour like respect, hard work, building for the future, modesty and avoiding wasteful living. My late mother did the same and taught you religious values too.

However, you dishonoured me so much and breached my trust when under your company Lowerhill Management Limited, you joined Sebuliba in forging tenancy agreements for yourselves, and then proceeded to the court and the media harassing me, insulting and defaming me, and claiming ownership of properties you very well know belong to companies which i founded.

I and Visa Investment Limited have had to defend your baseless claims at a huge cost through four suits in the High Court, and now Court of Appeal.

When you became antagonist and ignored all advice from many family members and friends to apologise and undo your wrong, I found it necessary to stop you from coming to my home and office because you were now court antagonists and not behaving like family members.

I have no problem with meeting you provided you first withdraw all the court cases against me and the companies, and offer a sincere apology to me and other family members you have insulted  and also vacate and hand back the company properties . I would then be willing to sit down with and talk to you anytime. I hope you don’t wait until it is too late.

This is the position I have told the various people you have sent to broker a meeting between me and you and I still stand by the same position. As I have always told you, i will never reward any of you or yours.

Over 200 inmates to sit PLE

UNEB Executive Secretary Dan Odong

The Uganda Prisons services have revealed that 234 inmates will write this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) kicking off tomorrow. The revelation was made by the spokesperson of the Uganda prison services Frank Baine.

A total of 749,811 candidates are expected to sit for this year’s PLE from 14,300 examination Centres. This is an increase of 54,007(7.8 %) from 2019. 53% (395,855) of the total candidature are females while 47% (353,957) are males. 68.4% (513,091) are funded under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) Program, while 31.6 % (236,720) are non-UPE candidates.

Speaking earlier today, Mr Baine said 58 of these candidates are inmates from Upper Prison School Luzira, the rest are from other detention centers in the country.

He said the inmates are well prepared for the examinations and ready to continue with their studies when they pass.

The Executive Secretary of Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Daniel Odong said the exams will be held under the theme; ‘Integrity and security in the management of examinations; the health and safety of learners is a joint responsibility’.

He appealed to everyone involved in the conduct of examinations to act with high levels of integrity to ensure malpractice is controlled and the examination is secure.

“We appeal to all District Inspectors of Schools to ensure that sufficient numbers of invigilators are deployed per sitting centre to ensure that the candidates are properly supervised and the SOPs are followed in each examination room,” he said.

He assured candidates that they have what it takes for to pass this examination. “The questions are drawn from what you have studied over the last seven years. We encourage you not to be misled by anyone claiming to have access to the PLE questions. This may lead to cancellation of your results,” he said.

FUFA accuses Malawi FA of tampering with Taddeo Lwanga’s #Covid-19 results

Taddeo Lwanga

FUFA has accused the Malawi Football Association for tampering with Covid-19 results of midfielder Taddeo Lwanga ahead of the decisive Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.

Uganda needs just a point to ensure they reach a third successive AFCON tournament after doing so in 2017 and 2019 while Malawi must win to return to the finals for a first time since 2010.

According to reports from Malawi, defensive midfielder Taddeo Lwanga, who was one of the best Cranes players against Burkina Faso, tested positive for Covid-19 and thus not eligible to play against Malawi, results that FUFA has disputed.

FUFA says the player tested negative per the results certificate.

“FUFA has written and requested CAF to consider the results from the SADC Accredited Laboratory which is all under the same Management as Queens Central Hospital. Two tests show different results. The boys have remain strong depsite the issue at hand,” FUFA said.

Various reports also indicate goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, midfielder Ibrahim Orit and forward Farouk Miya have had their results delayed in an effort to be tampered with.

According to FUFA, all Uganda Cranes players tested negative for Covid-19 and are eligible to play.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been used as tool by most teams especially in Africa to fulfill their targets by weakening their opponents.

Sections of CEC front Oboth-Oboth for office of Speaker of Parliament

Markson Jacob Oboth, the Chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Committee

A section of the Central Executive Committee of the ruling party is mooting an idea of fronting West Budama County South Member of Parliament, Marksons Jacob Oboth for the position of speaker of parliament.

Marksons Jacob Oboth commonly known as Jacob Oboth-Oboth is the chairperson of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee

Oboth-Oboth was instrumental in among others, the 2018 Age limit bill which saw the expunging of both the lower and upper presidential age limit of 75 years and 35 years and hence  giving a leeway for president Yoweri Museveni to contest in the 2021 presidential elections.

The election of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament is the first activity of the assembly after the administration of oaths after being gazetted by the Electoral Commission as winners of January 14, 2021 parliamentary elections.

According to Article 82 of the 1995 Constitution, the office of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament shall be elected by Members of Parliament from among themselves.

According to a source at parliament, there is a new proposal being crafted within the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

According to the proposal, CEC is concerned why the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah are so interested in the speakership so much and worried about the divisive politics in the country.

According to the proposal, the source said that CEC wants Oboth-Oboth to leave the position of Deputy Speaker which he is  vying for but go for the post of speaker.

“Oulanyah could be named the Attorney General in the next government and Kadaga Vice President. To resolve standing conflict and divisive politics within the NRM,” the source said.

Kadaga is every other day hitting at Oulanyah labeling him among others a coward who declined to preside over the age limit debate. Oulanyah has since declined to relent in line to achieve his political goals.

Earlier this month, Kiboga district woman MP who doubles as Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa was dragged into Kadaga-Oulanyah row on the floor of parliament after some members claimed that she was campaigning for Oulanyah.

Nankabirwa denied the claims saying she was just reminding MPs of the 2016 CEC resolution to the effect that Kadaga was to serve only ten years and pass on the baton to Oulanyah.

The speakership race has three candidates; Kadaga, Oulanyah and Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda.

The MPs vying for the position of Deputy Speaker are; Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among, Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko, Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa, Theodore Ssekikubo, the Lwemiyaga County MP , State Minister for Finance David Bahati and Gomba West MP Robina Gureme Rwakoojo.

Museveni to meet Oulanyah and Kadaga over hotly-contested Speakership race

The President of Uganda who is also chairman of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement  Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is today scheduled to meet the Speaker and her deputy.

Both Rebecca Kadaga and Jacob Oulanyah are contesting for the post of Speaker of Parliament. According to sources, the meeting is peddled at resolving the standing row between the two candidates.

Last year at a conflict resolution meeting at State House which was attended by both Kadaga, Oulanyah and other top party wigs that was presided over by Museveni, Oulanyah affirmed to the head of state that come rain or sunshine, he was going to challenge Kadaga and nobody would compel him to quit the race.

Currently, the two are in a cold war hurling insults at each other. Last week, Kadaga labeled her deputy a coward, noting that during the age limit debate Oulanyah called her and said there was something he couldn’t handle and she came in straight into fire as the Deputy ran away.

In retaliation the deputy speaker said his boss lost support and she should not be campaigning if she has support of the 300 MPs as she alleges.

Earlier this month, Kiboga district woman MP Ruth Nankabirwa was dragged into Kadaga-Oulanyah row on the floor of parliament after some members claimed that she was campaigning for the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

Nankabirwa denied the claims saying she was just reminding MPs of the 2016 CEC resolution to the effect that Kadaga was to serve only ten years and pass on the baton to Oulanyah.

Bell, Swangz team up with Fameica, what is the big deal?

Fik Fameica

Everything singer Shafik Walukagga aka Fik Fameica has touched over time has turned into gold.

Ever since his debut song ‘Pistol’ almost six years ago, Fik has grown from strength to strength, winning multiple honors in the process including ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Rapper of the Year’ awards in 2018.

It is the same year that he also received his first international nomination alongside Khaligraph Jones and Sarkodie at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards in the category of ‘Best Male Artist Non-Nigerian/Africa’.

Fast forward, with the awards, Fik has produced hit songs after another with revelers now dancing to ‘Bulagita’ and ‘Ready’.

And as we wait for the first single off his latest album, the 28-year-old musician can comfortably say he might not be looking for handouts anytime soon in these hard Covid-19 times following a multi-million shillings deal with Uganda’s’ Premium Adult Beverage Company, Uganda Breweries Ltd as well as Swangz Avenue.

And he took to social media recently to share the good news with his 1.8 million followers on Facebook and twitter.

“Sealed and Signed with #UBL. @BellLager @SwangzAvenue_official # Grateful” he wrote.

The details are still sketchy, but the ‘money bags’ emojis that accompanied the message seem to say it all  the deal is so huge for his small shoulders he too seemed speechless when he signed above the dotted line at the SwangzAvenue offices.

Malawi vs Uganda: Cranes eager to seal AFCON qualification

Abdallah Mubiru Uganda-Cranes Interim Coach

Uganda Cranes are looking to secure their spot in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations when they finish their Group B campaign away to Malawi on Monday evening.

The Cranes are second behind already-qualified Burkina Faso, while Malawi occupy third spot, one point behind Uganda ahead of this key encounter.

Uganda just need to avoid defeat against the Malawi Flames to reach the third consecutive Afcon finals while the hosts need nothing else but a win to qualify for the third time in their history, having previously competed in the finals in both 1984 and 2010.

“We now know that job must be completed in Malawi. Even before this game, we know that no matter the outcome, we had to secure a good result away in Malawi. Therefore, we shall use the time between now and Monday to polish up,” Abdallah Mubiru said after the goalless draw against Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

This will be the 30th meeting between the two nations – Uganda won 15, lost 6 and drawn 8. The Cranes won the first meeting played in Kampala 2-0; Okwi and Bayo were the goal scorers.

Fahad Bayo, Patrick Kaddu, Timothy Awany, and Allan Kyambadde are doubts for today’s game to be played in Lilongwe owing to injuries picked during their home game against Burkina Faso.

Opposition parties need a joint strategy and not joint presidential candidate.

Mr. Mukalazi

By Mukalazi Deus Mubiru

Research Associate, Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies (GLISS).

Since 1996, every time Uganda approaches an election period, talk of opposition fielding a joint candidate, to defeat candidate Museveni, comes up. In the 1996 presidential elections, UPC and DP fronted Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere under the Inter-party Cooperation. In 2001, the Opposition rallied behind Dr Kizza Besigye under Reform Agenda. In 2016, there were attempts to field one presidential candidate to face Mr Museveni under The Democratic Alliance (TDA) but this collapsed because the Opposition political parties once again failed to agree on who should be their joint candidate.

In the run-up to the 2021 elections, there was talk and efforts to have a joint presidential candidate. In principle, all the leading players like Rtd Col Dr Kiiza Besigye of People’s Government, Amuriat of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Nobert Mao of Democratic Party (DP), Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Robert Kyagulanyi of National Unity Platform (NUP) among others hinted on the need to present a joint candidate. However, just like in 2016, there was no agreement and all parties fielded Presidential candidates.

While appearing on the weekly political talk show, the Front Line, on NBS TV on the night of Thursday, March 5, 2021, the Secretary-General of the FDC, Hon Nathan Nandala Mafabi, at the risk of sounding tribalistic and sectarian, applauded Buganda for showing the rest of Uganda on how things should be done by overwhelmingly voting Hon Robert Kyagulanyi for President and NUP Candidates for Member of Parliament and Local Government. In the same spirit, he blamed the Acholi, Easterners and people of Ntungamo for neglecting their own, that is Nobert Mao, Patrick Amuriat and Mugisha Muntu respectively.

Hon Nandala’s statements re-open a debate that is yet to be resolved. Do we need an alliance of -pro-change forces in Uganda if we are to realize a peaceful transition of power and get rid of Museveni who many people believe has overstayed his welcome or parties should focus on creating regional niches and support thereby  weakening the National Resistance Movement (NRM) of President Museveni?

In August 2020, the Uganda Governance Pulse, a Public Perception Survey on governance indicators in the country produced its maiden report. The survey had interesting data which showed how different sub-regions were likely to vote in the 2021 presidential elections. Then, as per the surveyed people, the race was between three top contenders: Yoweri Museveni, Kyagulanyi Sentamu and Kiiza Besigye. The survey showed that Yoweri Kaguta Museveni would win the presidency but with 47 per cent which would deny him the constitutionally required 50 per cent plus 1 vote to win. In the same survey, Kyagulanyi came second with 22 per cent and Besigye came third with 17 per cent. According to the poll, Kyagulanyi had strong support in Buganda and Kampala with considerable support in Busoga, Bugisu, Bukedi and Sebei. Museveni had support in the rest of the sub-regions with his strongest support base being Bukedi, Lango and Tooro at 65 per cent. Kiiza Besigye did not command overall support in any of the regions but it’s important to note that he had more support than Kyagulanyi in Ankole, Kigezi, Bunyoro, Tooro and Rwenzori regions or what one can sum up as the Western region.

It’s possible that Besigye’s dwindling support in Buganda (his hitherto stronghold) coupled with the belief that one strong opposition candidate is the way to go, might have contributed to his decision not to contest. Going by the announced presidential elections results, it’s evident that Besigye’s withdrawal from the race cost the opposition because as projected many opposition supporters in the Western region refused to embrace the strong opposition candidate in the race, Kyagulanyi. As a result, Museveni ended up consolidating his support in the region as evidenced in many areas like Rukungiri which overwhelmingly voted for him.

There is an iota of truth in what Nadala argued, as evidence by the good performance of Patrick Amuriat in the Teso sub-region. Although the region was won by Museveni at 56 per cent, Amuriat’s a’s (FDC Presidential candidate) performance of 24 per cent beating Kyagulanyi at 16 per cent underscores the regional undertones that characterized the election. Amuriat scored a national average of 3 per cent. Similarly, Kyagulanyi’s dismal performance in the Western Region at 16 per cent shows the same trend.

However, the tribal and or regional approach as suggested by Hon. Nandala suffers a setback when you look at the performance of Nobert Mao in Acholi, Lango and West Nile as well. Also, Amuriat’s performance in Bugisu, Karamoja and Sebei shows that voters will not vote for someone simply because he is “their own.” Generals, Tumukunde and Greggory Mugisha Muntu were shunned by the Westerners and Hon Robert Kyagulanyi performed better than them even in their own home districts of Rukungiri and Ntungamo respectively.

The performance of FDC candidates  when it came to parliamentary elections also has lessons for political parties. Whereas the FDC Presidential candidate garnered a miserable 3 per cent overall and did not win even a single District, the party returned 34 Parliamentary candidates spread all over the country from Kabale to West Nile. The thinking that FDC and NUP would compete for space seems to be false as the results showed each party can actually develop a niche and compete favourably thereby stretching the NRM and Museveni indirectly.

It’s therefore important that political parties get on the drawing board and make multi-party politics possible in Uganda. As argued by Mr Godber Tumushabe, the associate director at Great Lakes Institute for Strategic Studies (GLISS), opposition parties, are fighting against a very entrenched dictatorship. Museveni has captured all state institutions. A political coalition will not make any difference. The political parties have their differences and should focus on their internal democracy and getting a cause to fight for. As rightly put by Mr Mwabusya Ndebesa, now is the time for the opposition to build on mobilization gains from the election and be united in strategy to force Museveni and NRM to negotiate transition and handing overpower.
