Uganda Hippos: 38 players summoned to prepare for AFCON U20 tournament

The technical team of Uganda U20 Hippos side headed by Coach Morley Byekwaso has summoned 38 players to begin preparations for the Total AFCON U20 tournament in Mauritania running from February 14th to 6th March 2021.

UK based young lads Kitaka Samuel Moses (Loughborough University) and Odokonyero Nathan (Lincoln City) are some of the new faces in the squad.

The players and officials will report for official camping on Wednesday 20th January 2021 and will reside at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisasi.

The squad also has Bobosi Byaruhanga and Abdul Aziizi Kayondo currently on duty with the Uganda Cranes CHAN Team in Cameroon. They will join the squad depending on Uganda’s performance at the tournament.

Meanwhile, official training starts on Thursday evening at the Omondi Stadium in Lugogo – Kampala.

Uganda Hippos won the CECAFA Regional AFCON Qualifiers in December 2020

This is the first-ever Uganda Hippos engagement in the AFCON U20 Finals after emerging champions of the CECAFA Regional Qualifiers in December 2020.

Minister Kamya defeated at her home polling station

Lands minister Betty Namisango Kamya, was defeated at Sendi’s Compound polling station in Lungujja parish, her home polling station where she voted from.

At this polling station, minister Kamya garnered 375( three hundred seventy five) votes defeated by the Nation Unity Platform-NUP, parliamentary candidate Ababaker Kawalya in Rubaga North constituency who has managed to score 598 votes and the incumbent Moses Kasibante scored 151 ( one hundred fifty one).

Kamya who is standing with other candidates include; Arafat Sulaiman, Nicholus Semayobe and Francis Kizito.

Voters on Sendi’s Compound polling station attribute Minister Kamya’s defeat to her being a member of Nation Resistance Movement-NRM.

William Kakooza, a resident of Lungujja who had his vote cast at the same polling station said, people in Kampala are tired of hearing anything to do with NRM.

“Betty Kamya is a good person and she is loved by people in this area because she is born here and even her father’s family is just ahead,” Kakooza adds.

In the same polling station, the NUP Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanya defeated all 11(eleven) contenders by scoring 899 votes followed by president Yoweri Museveni, NRM Candidate who scored 219( two hundred nineteen votes).

University students innovate Egg Incubator after failing to access chicks for rearing

A group of students from Makerere, Kyambogo and Makerere University Business School-MUBS have innovated an Egg Incubator for their farm after failing to have any access to chicks for rearing.

The students argue that the initial plan was to procure chicks; however, this did not go according to the plans since they failed to have the access to chicks after several attempt

Nickson Baguma, a first year student of bachelors in Information systems and Technology, says at the start of the lockdown, they came up with an idea of poultry keeping, after agreeing with each other, they set all the requirements for a poultry farm such as feed troughs, drinkers, mash among others, well knowing that it was easy for them to acquire day old chicks (DOCs).

When everything was ready, they started the struggle to get DOCs which was so difficult in a way that they would order for chicks in July and expect the chicks in November.

“We sat and agreed that we have to be agents of change on that issue as educated youth, we mobilized the little funds we had and acquired some little loans and successfully constructed an incubator,” Baguma explains.

According to Baguma, the machine was tested two times with the first testing, 12 eggs in the incubator, five hatched and 7 seveni failed and they attribute this failure to shortages of power, unfertilized eggs and lack of knowledge for operating the incubator. The Second testing had 12 eggs in the incubator, six hatched successfully. This means they have registered an improvement of one egg from the previous testing.

A 400 capacity egg incubator is made of wood and the Inside is coated with a blanket to keep warmth, it cost about shillings 1.2million. It has a hatching rate of 75%. The force-air incubator has a fan that spreads the warm air all over the egg chamber.

Richie Atusasire Twiine another student says that this incubator took them over two months to have it in existence. He adds that they experienced a challenge in acquiring the thermostat and hygrometer which was so tiresome.

“So far we have used it to hatch the chicken eggs only but we are sure it can hatch even all the other types of eggs,” Atusasire explains.

The students include; Nickson Baguma, a first year student of bachelors in Information systems and Technology, Innocent Duhibaze second year student of Bachelors of commerce, Osbert Natukunda a first year student of civil engineering Kyambogo University, Hilda Nuwabiine first year student of bachelor of business administration, Shivan Asasira first year student of bachelors of Education and Richie Atusasire Twiine, a lab technician at Kyamakanda health centre in Rukungiri.

Most Universities and other higher institutions of learning are set to open for the first semester in this very month after being closed since March 2020.

Bobi Wine stuck with 18 month old baby under house arrest

National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has revealed that they are stuck with an 18-month old baby as there home in Magere continues to be surrounded by security.

Bobi Wine says it is now six days since he was placed under house arrest with his wife Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi and an 18-months old baby who had paid a visit to her auntie (Bobi Wine’s wife).

“Day Six under house arrest and we’re still stuck with an 18 months old baby who had paid a visit to her auntie (my wife) before we were raided and besieged,” Bobi Wine posted on his social media accounts.

Bobi Wine also revealed that they have run out of food at home since they are not allowed to leave there house to get what to eat.

“The Dad has been denied access to her. We have run out of food and milk. No one is allowed to leave or come into our compound,” he added.

According to police spokesperson Enanga Fred, Bobi Wine’s home is surrounded by security to restrain his movement as a preventive measure following intelligence police received about planned riots and protests countrywide protesting the outcome of the 14th January presidential election.

The U.S. embassy said on Monday that Ambassador Natalie E. Brown had been stopped from visiting Bobi Wine at his residence.

Bobi Wine’s lawyers also tried to get access to the home but were unsuccessful.

Emirates becomes one of the first airlines in the world to trial IATA Travel Pass

Emirates has partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to become one of the first airlines in the world to trial IATA Travel Pass – a mobile app to help passengers easily and securely manage their travel in line with any government requirements for Covid-19 testing or vaccine information.

IATA Travel Pass enables Emirates passengers to create a ‘digital passport’ to verify their pre-travel test or vaccination meets the requirements of the destination. They will also be able to share the test and vaccination certificates with authorities and airlines to facilitate travel. The new app will also enable travellers to manage all travel documentation digitally and seamlessly throughout the travel experience.

Prior to a full roll out, Emirates will implement phase 1 in Dubai for the validation of COVID-19 PCR tests before departure. In this initial phase, expected to begin in April, Emirates customers travelling from Dubai will be able to share their COVID-19 test status directly with the airline even before reaching the airport through the app, which will then auto-populate the details on the check-in system.

Adel Al Redha Emirates’ Chief Operating Officer said: “While international travel remains as safe as ever, there are new protocols and travel requirements with the current global pandemic. We have worked with IATA on this innovative solution to simplify and digitally transmit the information that is required by countries and governments into our airline systems, in a secure and efficient manner. We are proud to be one of the first airlines in the world to pilot this initiative, which will provide an enhanced customer experience and conveniently facilitate our customers’ travel needs.”

Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President for Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security said: “We’re proud to work with Emirates to make IATA Travel Pass available in the Middle East region. With its global customer base and network traffic, Emirates as a partner will also bring invaluable input and feedback to improve the Travel Pass programme. This is the first step in making international travel during the pandemic as convenient as possible giving people the confidence that they are meeting all COVID-19 entry requirements by governments. As borders re-open, IATA Travel Pass will be further enhanced with more capabilities to meet all governments testing or vaccination verification requirements and Emirates customers will be among the first to have these services.”

Within the IATA Travel Pass app, the integrated registry of travel requirements will also enable passengers to find accurate information on travel and entry requirements for all destinations regardless of where they are travelling from. It will also include a registry of testing and eventually vaccination centres – making it more convenient for passengers to find testing centres and labs at their departure location which meet the standards for testing and vaccination requirements of their destination.

The platform will also enable authorized labs and test centres to securely send test results or vaccination certificates to passengers. The global registry, managed by IATA, will manage and allow the secure flow of necessary information amongst all stakeholders and to provide a seamless passenger experience.

Emirates is committed to providing a seamless customer experience at all touchpoints. In the last few months, it has introduced a smart contactless journey with an integrated biometric path and other services including self-check-in and bag drop kiosks at Dubai International airport for a smoother airport experience.

Dr. Sam Lyomoki, Dr. Ekwaro Obuku lose in Workers’ MP elections

Dr. Sam Lyomoki and Dr. Ekwaro Obuku have lost in the Workers’ MP elections which happened yesterday at Kibuli Secondary School.

Currently there are five slots for individuals who represent workers in parliament. The five categories include; Youth, army, elderly and disabled.

According to Mr. Ibrahim Kakembo who presided over the hotly contested elections, the five categories attracted 18 candidates.

The poll results indicate that the new entrant Abdu Byakatonda defeated the incumbent Dr Sam Lyomoki after he garnered 174 votes.

The election also saw National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) chairman Usher Wilson Owere, Dr Ekwaro Obuku losing.

The winners include National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Charles Bakabulindi who garnered 228 votes, Margaret Rwabushaija 291, Arinaitwe Rwakajara 271 and Agnes Kunihira 326.

Kakembo said a total of 500 delegates participated in the election and six didn’t show up.

Labour Ministry clears migrant workers with payment receipts for Interpol letters

The Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development has permitted external labour recruitment agencies to start document processing for migrant workers with payment receipts for Interpol letters in lieu of the actual letters.

The ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is only issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) through Interpol. It is one of the required documents presented at the airport by the individuals seeking to work abroad.

In a letter to labour exporting companies, the acting permanent secretary to the Labour ministry, A.D. Kibenge warned that; “At the time of departure of migrant workers, the external employment desk at the airport shall not clear any migrant worker who is not in possession of valid Interpol letter.”

Currently, the time frame for processing of certificates of good conduct has been reduced from three weeks to five days and efforts are being made to completely digitalize the process to include online bookings.

The digitalization is peddled at among others curbing forgery of certificates which causes trouble to recipients who at the end of the day are intercepted while trying to board planes. The certificate of good conduct is required by foreign governments before they can allow an alien to work in their countries.

Church of Uganda suspends Rtd Archbishop Stanley Ntagali over adultery

The Retired Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali has been suspended from performing priestly duties after indulging in adultery.

According to a letter to the Anglican Bishops under the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON), Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu said Ntagali is not allowed to preach, represent the Church of Uganda in any way.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my predecessor, retired Archbishop Stanley Ntagali, has been involved in an extra-marital affair with a married woman whom he has acknowledged,” he said in a letter.

“Retired Archbishop Ntagali has betrayed his Lord and Saviour, his wife and their marriage vows, as well as the faith of many Ugandans and global Christians who looked to him to live the faith he proclaimed,” he said.

Kazimba said; “This is not a time for us to gossip. This is a time for repentance; a time for prayer; a time to examine our own sin and failings in humility; and a time to make all our relationships right before God. Please pray for the spouses in both relationships, for repentance and healing in those who have committed adultery, and for justice and forgiveness to flow throughout our land.”

2021 Elections: Statistics on the number of MPs who have been declared winners so far

On 14th January, Uganda conducted parliamentary elections with the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) yet again emerging with the most Members of Parliament.

According to the preliminary results so far, out of the 499 electoral areas, NRM got 310 MPs with the closest opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) coming with 56.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) managed to secure 34 seats, Uganda People’s Congress got 10 seats, and the Democratic Party with 8. PPP, JEEMA and Alliance for National Transformation all got one member each while the independents are 78.

NRM won massively in East, West, and Northern parts of the country but was got zero seats in the central region where NUP performed the best.

A total of 21 prominent Government officials/Ministers lost in the elections. These are; Hon. Ssekandi Edward Kiwanuka (Vice President), Hon. Judith Nabakooba (Min. of State for ICT), Hon. Kibuule Ronald (Min. of State for Water), Hon. Atim Beatrice Anywar (Min. of State for Environment), Hon. Dr Elioda Tumwesigye (Min. of State for Technology), Hon. Kibazanga Christopher (Min. of State for Defence), Hon. Mwesigwa Rukutana (Deputy Attorney General), Hon. Kamya Betty Turwomwe (Min. for Lands, Housing and Urban Development), Dr. Kasirivu Atwooki Baltazar Kyamanywa (Min. of State for Economic Affairs), Hon. Achieng Sarah Opendi (Min. of State for Mineral Development), Hon. Galabuzi Denis Ssozi (Min. State for Luwero Triangle).

Others are; Hon. Isanga Musumba Isaac (Min. for State for Urban Development),  Hon. Maganda Julius (Min. of State for East African Affairs), Hon. Museveni renews Mutebile’s contract as Governor BoU

President Yoweri Museveni has renewed the contract of Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile for another five years.

The renewal of the contract make Mr, the longest serving Governor of BoU. He has served as Governor Bank of Uganda since 2001.

He was first appointed to that position on  January 1,2001 and was re-appointed for a second five-year term on  January 1, 2006. In December 2015, he was re-appointed for a fourth five-year term, effective 12 January 12, 2016.

Mutebile is credited for the growth of the economy especially in the early 2000s that so the economic recovery of many sectors.

Between the year 1979 and 1984, Tumusiime-Mutebile was appointed to several government positions in Uganda ranging from Deputy Principal Secretary to president at the State House in 1979, to Undersecretary in the Ministry of Planning in 1981 where he rose to Senior Economist and then Chief Economist in 1984. In 1992, he was appointed Permanent Secretary to the newly combined Ministry of Finance Planning & Economic Development, a merger that he had advocated.

Meanwhile it is reported that BoU board is under spotlight for allegedly appointing Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego. According to sources, it is alleged that Dr. Atingi-Ego hid his past record when he didn’t disclose that he had previously been in prison for six months. It is however, not clear how this could have happened without his employer BoU noticing because it is alleged the offence was committed while he still worked with BoU before departing for African Development Bank.

Ating-Ego replaced Dr. Louis Kasekende whose contract ended but was never renewed. Kasekende and former executive Director in charge of Supervision Justine Bagyenda were heavily implicated in the closure of several banks by the parliamentary investigative committee that implicated them for the mess.
