Kadaga calls for grassroots screening for cancer

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has reiterated her call to the Uganda Rotary Cancer Program to further spread their message to get to the lowest person so as to improve the country’s statistics about cancer.

Officiating at the Rotary Virtual Cancer Run 2020, Kadaga, commended the team for their dedication and drive towards eradicating cancer in the country and thanked participants and sponsors of the run.

Unlike past years where runners converged at the Independence Grounds in Kololo for the event, this year saw participants running from different locations and sharing pictures and videos over social media. This was meant to avoid gathering, one way to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

“Today we are here to celebrate the resilience of the Rotary family in fighting this disease called cancer. In March this year no one would have predicted that we cannot sit together or plan together because of the pandemic,” she said in Muyenga on 30 August 2020.

“Nonetheless you did not allow this situation to stop the annual run which is now in Uganda and the whole world. I will continue to urge you to go down to the very last Ugandan in the deepest of villages so that we can improve on the statistics,” she said.

She said that she was looking forward to a time when cancer screening becomes routine which would lead to its early detection and treatment.

The Chairperson of the Uganda Rotary Cancer Program and District Past Governor, Steven Mwanje, said that they have embarked on creating awareness and offering free services in the villages.

“We want to create awareness in the population, offer free screening and ultimately free treatment; building infrastructure and finally building human resource capacity to deal and treat with the cancer patients,” he said adding that “With the support of Nsambya Hospital, we go around the country offering free screening services.”

The Chairperson Rotary Cancer Run, 2020, Dennis Jjuuko thanked all the sponsors of the Rotary Cancer Run for their donations which have helped them raise substantial resources that have built the Rotary Cancer Centre located in Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.

“I thank all those who ran and I continue to encourage you to exercise regularly, eat healthy foods and endeavor to test for cancer regularly as it is still a dangerous disease,” Jjuuko said.

The District Governor Rosetti Nayenga, said that Rotary committed to serve humanity, and believes in disease prevention and treatment hence their drive to spread the message of wellness, improving and expanding services towards health care.

At the event, the Rotary family paid tribute to the fallen film star of the Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, who died of Colon Cancer.

Visa squashes transaction charges in new ‘sasuza visa’ campaign

Visa Uganda Country Manager, Ms. Salma Ingabire

Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments, has today launched a consumer education campaign that aims to eliminate the practice of surcharging, where merchants levy extra charges on payments made using debit or credit cards at a Point of Sale (POS).

Dubbed ‘Sasuza Visa’, the campaign comes at a time when the country is battling with the novel Coronavirus pandemic and Ugandans are encouraged to protect themselves by adopting cashless payments, physical distancing and good hygiene practices.

Speaking about the campaign, Visa Uganda Country Manager, Ms. Salma Ingabire said, “We have seen an increasing demand among consumers and merchants to take advantage of the benefits of cashless payments in light of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.  At Visa, we are working with our partners to ensure that our capabilities are made widely available and updated specifically to help meet today’s challenges. This includes ensuring that merchants do not surcharge consumers who are using their Visa card to pay for goods and services.”

As part of the campaign, Visa will be partnering with various service providers such as supermarkets and fuel stations to ensure customers do not suffer unnecessary charges or delays and enjoy the convenience of paying with their Visa card.

The ‘Sasuza Visa’ campaign comes just under a year after the Bank of Uganda issued a circular prohibiting the practice of surcharging by merchants announced that extra charges were illegal and traders should stop levying them.

According to the Central Bank, no business owner is allowed to set a minimum or maximum amount as a condition to using electronic card payments.

Ham exposes DTB in court

Kampala businessman, Hamis Kiggundu has asked the Commercial Division of the High Court to throw out the defence evidence presented by Diamond Trust Bank in a row involving the two parties

Kiggundu, the proprietor of Ham Enterprises Limited and Kiggs International (U) limited dragged DTB -Uganda, and DTB-Kenya to Commercial Court for fraudulently siphoning over sh120b from his accounts without his knowledge and consent*

On Monday, Kiggundu’s lawyers led by Fred Muwema raised a preliminary objection in which they said they had filed an application to move court to struck out DTB’s defence arguing that it is based on illegalities.
“The defences are based on illegal transactions including the loan agreements which were made in Kenya lending in Uganda. DTB Uganda facilitated an illegality by allowing DTB Kenya to break the law in Uganda,”Muwema said.

*The lawyer explained that because DTB Kenya is not licensed to carry out financial services in Uganda*, it was wrong to carry out any business with Hamis Kiggundu and that it was wrong for the bank to use their counterparts, of DTB Uganda to help them enforce the loan agreement in Uganda.

The lawyer argues that the court should find it logical to dismiss the evidence by DTB Uganda for helping another bank carry out an illegality.

Muwema said that if their application is successful in an October,5, 2020 ruling by the trial judge, Henry Peter Adonyo, there will not be need for any further hearing of the case.

According to court documents, Kiggundu provided security/mortgage comprised in Plot no.923, Block 9 located at Makerere Hill Road to support the credit facilities he had got from DTB but the businessman says when he carried out an audit and reconciliation of the loan accounts, he found out that the DTB had taken shs34 billion and $23 million from his account.

The businessman wants court to declare that DTB breached the different loan agreements entered into with him between February 16, 2011, and November 16, 2019 when it fully recovered over and above what was due to it through the loan installments and interest payment deductions .

In its defence, DTB argues that the businessman through his tow companies obtained credit facilities from them and provided securities in the form of property to secure the credit facilities.

The bank argues that the facility agreements entered into between the parties are legally binding and enforceable under the law and that the deductions and charges made against the plaintiff’s accounts were in accordance with the credit facilities issued to them.

According to the bank, the businessman’s issuance of notices to it purporting to terminate their bank-customer relationships, it remains liable to settle its payment obligations and fulfill the terms of the mortgage instruments

*Court adjourned to 6th October 2020*

Mukono district principal Medical Officer applauds Coca-Cola for campaigns against Covid-19

CCBA’s Special Events and Promotion Manager, Newton Lee Ogong handing over some of the stations to the District, Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Anthony Konde at Mukono Municipality Headquarters.

Mukono district principal Medical Officer (PMO) Dr. Anthony Konde has urged all members of the Community to intensify hand washing in efforts to curb community transmission of the Covid-19.

Dr. Konde expressed his dismay over the surging number of Covid-19 cases in Mukono noting that the public is not adhering to the standard operating procedure (SOPs) peddled at stopping the spread of the virus.

Dr. Konde was speaking at the Municipality Headquarters where he received a donation of handwashing jerrycans from Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda (Century & Rwenzori Bottling Companies).

“As you may all know, we recently registered more coronavirus cases as a district. We must intensify our community mobilization and education immediately. We will distribute the handwashing facilities for the public to use, especially to places with gatherings such as the market areas. There is a growing laxity among the public which requires intensive community mobilization,” he said.

He applauded the Company for supporting the call by the Ministry of Health for members of the general public to observe public hygiene and frequently wash hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds each time.

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa has so far distributed 1,100 handwashing stations in various parts of the country including Kampala, Mbarara, Buikwe, Kalungu and now Mukono District.

“We are very appreciative as a District for this support. Many times, doing the simple things that people consider mundane can save a lot of lives. To all Ugandans: Wash your hands all the time, I can’t emphasize that enough. If you have workers that are suspected and have the symptoms, we have facilities at the hospital where we can check them. Even the two that were confirmed in the district were at our hospital, so let’s work together to fight COVID-19 infections in our communities,” he said.

Since March, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa has been at the forefront of championing handwashing initiatives as part of its UGX 1.3billion (One Billion Three Hundred Million Shillings) contribution to the fight against COVID-19. On top of committing to establish 5,000 hand washing stations, the Company has run public awareness campaigns and re-adjusted bottle labels to deliver the hand washing message to the general public.

At the handover ceremony, Special Events and Promotion Manager, Newton Lee Ogong, said the Company approach to managing COVID-19 is grounded on ‘People First’, covering the employees, their families, and the community at large.

“We have always put the health, safety and security of our people first. People throughout the world have been impacted in different ways by the COVID-19 pandemic. At Coca-Cola Beverages Africa we are doing our part to help prevent the further spread of the virus, while also supporting the needs of our customers, consumers, employees and communities,” he said.

“We are constantly monitoring the evolving situation and adapting our efforts and responses. We are working with different stakeholders at all levels; government and local NGOs to focus on recovery. We are confident that we, and the communities we proudly call home, will rebound by working together,” he reiterated.

In tandem, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa donated 165 cartons of Climb Up milk to vulnerable and single mothers in Mukono to boost their nutrition. The cartons were handed to the Uganda Red Cross Society in Mukono to distribute to the families in the community.  Coca-Cola has a long history of working with the Red Cross Community during difficult times through financial contributions, beverage donations, and by sharing marketing assets, expertise and more.

Uganda Red Cross Society Mukono Branch Manager, Sam Mugisha, applauded the company for the support.

“We are delighted to receive this consignment from Coca-Cola Beverages Africa during this period. We will be distributing these to vulnerable people in the community with the same efficiency we used during distribution of food relief during the lockdown,” he said.

During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the Coca-Cola Foundation donated UGX390million in food relief to vulnerable families in Mukono District, distributed by the Uganda Red Cross Society.

Additional interventions the company made in the COVID-19 fight included donations of UGX 85million to the Ministry of Health to buy medical equipment and sundries; public awareness worth UGX 460million and three pick-up trucks for the Ministry of Health COVID-19 Task Force.

How IUEA boss’ wife Shakira Kawesa and daughter perished in River Nile

Supar Shakira Kawesa

A wife to Hassan Alwi, a rally driver and the proprietor of the International University of East Africa (IUEA) has passed on after she drowned in river Nile.

Supar Shakira Kawesa and a daughter Miya Alwi died last evening moments after their boat got sucked into Kiira power station spillways.

According to Eskom Uganda Limited, a company contracted to manage the dam, a family of four tourists (two adults and two children) with a guide, experienced a boat engine failure on their way to the source of River Nile.

“Their boat was carried by the river current towards Kiira Power Station whose spillways were open to release excess water. The tour guide was rescued by the UPDF marine while the family was washed through the spillways.” Eskom said.

A lone boater in an attempt to rescue the family was also washed through the spillway.

They revealed that three people (an adult tourist, a child and the lone boater) have been rescued through the joint effort of our security team and UPDF marine and have been taken to Jinja Referral hospital for medical attention.

“UPDF marine and our security team are leading search efforts for the remaining two people. This regrettable incident has been reported to Jinja Police and is under investigation,” the company wrote.

“My year of birth was altered but I swore an affidavit to correct it”- Bobi Wine

Presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu also the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader has this afternoon come out to clear air on different queries posed on his date of birth and academic qualifications.

Last week, the maverick city lawyer Hassan Male Mabirizi moved to block the possible nomination of the pop-star-turned politician saying he is a dishonest person based on the inconsistency of information appearing on the different documents held by Kyagulanyi.

Mabirizi specifically questioned why several documents including UNEB pass slip and transcripts from Makerere indicated that Kyagulanyi was born in 1980 yet his passport and information at parliament indicate that he was born in 1982.

While explaining the inconsistency in his age, Kyagulanyi noted that his year of birth was changed in 1982 to enable him sit for primary leaving examination. According to his account, in 1992, he was in primary six at St Aloysius Byukalagi Primary School but late father, J.W.Ssentamu thought he was bright enough to do PLE that year.

“I registered and sat for PLE in 1992. My father was advised that for his age to match with that of other candidates, he needed to increase my age by two years. That is when my year of birth was altered from 1982 to 1980. Despite sitting PLE without studying P.7, I passed my exams well.” says Bobi Wine giving reference to several televised interviews by late father and brothers.

Kyagulanyi however, adds that he could correct the ‘anomaly’ by that time and so he carried through his education documents only to swear an affidavit to in 2000 before he acquired his first passport. “I remember swearing an affidavit to reflect this change, which is what was required at the passport office at the time… all my records outside the academic documents since 2000 bear my true year of birth.” he adds.

The Kyadondo East legislator insisted that his age of birth was changed from 1982 to 1980 to enable him to sit for the primary leaving examination.

Kyagulanyi notes that one of his biological brother, Julius Walakira, was born on October 23, 1979 and with that fact there is no way how their mother could give birth to Kyagulanyi barely four months after.

He insisted that he was born on 12th February 1982, and said “there is no way how I could be born three months after the birth of my biological brother.”

Bobi Wine to name and shame state actors who approached him with money to join Museveni

Bobi Wine

Presidential aspirant and Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine has threatened to reveal all state actors who have tried to persuade him to discard his ambitions to run against the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni in 2021.

Bobi Wine said in a press briefing where he casted more light about his academic documents and his year of birth.  He said in a few days, he will name and shame all individuals who have been approaching him to stand down for president Museveni.

“There are a lot of people who have come to me promising billions of money. I will not heed to their pleas but continue pursuing my dreams.”  He said adding that the state uses a lot of tricks to distract as and as you see many have left us.

“The state employs violence, intimidation but we shall not relent. You are all aware of the imposters who claimed that we illegally changed the party leaders. They purport to be party members but without membership cards,” he said.

Earlier this month, a renowned lawyer Male Mabirizi protested the MP’s year of birth saying that it is not true that Bobi wine sat for Uganda certificate of education exams at the age of 14. He went on to petition Uganda electoral commission to avail him with academic papers which the MP filed when he contested in Kyadondo East.

The availed academic papers indicate that the MP failed mathematics at ‘O’ level and general paper at ‘A’ level. This sparked discussions on whether the MP is suitable to lead the country after failing the two subjects. On the other note, the MP missed a first grade by one aggregate at ‘O’ level.

“The issue of my academic documents and age have been brought up to derail our struggle. I want to encourage all the students out there who miss exams because they haven’t paid fees on time that I went through the same.”  He said adding that the world is looking for people who have done something, not how they did it.

He explained why he explained why his age does not merge the academic and other documents. He said he was born on February 12, 1982 not 1980 as the detractors allege. He said his elder brother was born on October 23, 1979 so there is no way that his late mother bore him in 1980.

Wine said he went to St Mary Goreti Kamwokya in 1986 (P.1), Alia P/S Kamwokya in 1987 (P.2), Kanoni UMEA P/S in 1988 (P.3), Kasasa P/S in 1989 (P.4), Kanoni R/C P/S in 1990 (P.5), St. Aloysius P/S in 1991 (P.6) in the same year and School, his late father was advised that due to brilliance of his son, he register for Primary Leaving Examinations for P.7. He registered and passed the exams. His father then had to increase his son’s age for him to sit the exams.

He then joined St. Maria Goreti for senior one in 1993, brainstorm academy Lubaga and Kitante Hill secondary school where he completed S.4 in 1996.

In 1997 he joined Alliance Advanced school Kamwokya in 1997 for S.5, Lubiri SS same years but term two, Kololo SS same year for term three, and S.6. He then Joined Makerere University for bachelor’s degree. He later dropped the course and applied for a diploma in Music.

Kyagulanyi said the contestation of his age was cleared a long time ago and anyone going against him is years behind. He said that he applied to UNEB so that he can have his names and spellings and the date  of birth changed to the original date and year of birth it was objected to.

And this indicated on his first passport he acquired in 2000. He said all this was cleared before he joined politics.
