Baba FM presenters face arrest days after hosting Bobi Wine

Nalufenya Police post is holding the programs director of Baba FM Twahir Ddamulira and five others over unrevealed charges.

Unverified Reports indicate that Twahir is detained for hosting the patron of the people power movement who double as Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu. A week back, the radio station hosted him to address his supporters ahead of the 2021 general elections.

Ddamulira was picked yesterday at Dunlop and bundled on a Police Force pickup along with five other colleagues. The other five detainees include two mechanics who had come to pick their money, a female known as Suzan, Mukose Rajab alias Daddy Alonso and the driver.

According to Damulira police have not revealed nor preferred any charges against them.

According to Baba FM Media team, the Kira region Police spokesperson Hajji Abbey Moiti could not explain why the group is in custody and referred them to the regional police commander.

The team noted that the regional police commander (RPC) hinted on arresting more BABA FM presenters. The presenters who face arrest include; Kalyowa Atanansi, Hussein Ibanda aka Swengere, Kasolo Alton and Namulondo Zakia aka Mama Kalibbala.

According to Swengere, they are accused of hosting Bobi Wine and supporting the People Power movement. He assumes that Mama Kalibbala is wanted because Bobi Wine mentioned her name during the show.

He also assumes that Kalyowa Atanansi is wanted for hosting Bobi Wine, Hassan Muwanga for sitting in the studio when Bobi Wine is being hosted, Kasolo Alton for standing for the Jinja City mayor on support of Bobi Wine and People Power, Swengere for driving Bobi Wine after the show and Ayub Khan for supporting Bobi Wine.

The unsolved mystery of John Brisker

john brisker

Where is John Brisker?

According to the King County, Washington Medical Examiner’s Office, he is deceased. They declared Brisker dead in 1985.

But is he dead? That’s the aura of Brisker. No one can say definitively. With Brisker, there is always uncertainty.

Were he alive, Brisker would have celebrated his 73rd birthday a little over a month ago. What is known for certain is that Brisker was last heard from on April 11, 1978 in Uganda.

What was he doing there? Again, there is uncertainty.

Some say he was there as a guest of Ugandan leader Idi Amin, perhaps even serving as a member of Amin’s security detail. Other tales suggest that it was work as a mercenary which brought Brisker to Kampala.

What really happened? As with any unsolved mystery, it’s always best to start at the beginning.

A Volatile Entrance

Brisker was raised in the Detroit projects, where life was cheap and you either grew tough or you didn’t get the chance to grow old.

“In Detroit, if you’re tough enough,” Brisker once told a reporter, “they name playgrounds for you.” As a kid, Brisker played basketball at a playground located between Hamtramck High School and Highland Park. Years later, that playground was named in Brisker’s honor.

Brisker dabbled in boxing but found his calling on the hardwood, even though his path always seemed to be taken over a bumpy road.

“I never heard too much about his background,” future NBA teammate Slick Watts told the Seattle Times of Brisker. “His mom and dad, his brothers and sisters. He never went into that.”

In University with the Toledo Rockets, where he also played the tuba in the marching band, Brisker flunked out of school as a senior.

Brisker averaged 14.1 points per game with the Rockets. At 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, he was a smooth package of sturdy muscle, blazing speed and pure, natural talent.

In 1969, he was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Draft and the Pittsburgh Pipers in the ABA Draft.

For perhaps the first time in his life, Brisker was a man with good options. Either team was going to be a good bet for him. The Sixers were NBA champs in 1966-67. The Pipers were reigning ABA champions.

Heavyweight Champion Of The ABA

Brisker chose the ABA and it seemed a good decision. He was an All-ABA selection in two of his first three seasons. He scored 53 points in a game. But there was always that undertone with Brisker, the persistent uncertainty, the days when his rage took over and controlled him.

The moments when, as one of his teammates explained, “John’s in his Dracula bag.”

Brisker had three three talents – shooting, rebounding and fighting. No one ever knew in which order they’d appear from day to day. Former teammate Spencer Haywood described Brisker as “LeBron James with anger issues.”

Tales of Brisker spread like wildfire. There was the story that he once ran onto the court during practice, waving a gun. Utah held a “John Brisker Intimidation Night,” sitting professional boxers on the bench. Tom Nissalke, a former ABA and Sonics coach, put a $500 bounty on Brisker before a game.

“He just scared me,” former player Billy Knight told author Terry Pluto.

“Say something wrong to the guy – or at least he thought was wrong – and you had this feeling that John would reach into his bag, take out a gun and shoot you,” ex-player Charlie Williams said.

After attending a game at the 1971 World Series in Pittsburgh, Brisker got into a fist fight with another man over a cab. Police intervened and Brisker fought them as well, sending two officers to hospital. He was arrested.

A SuperSonic Launch

Brisker moved to the NBA in 1972, joining the Seattle SuperSonics. Although he had his moments, including a 47-point game, Brisker was never as effective a performer in the NBA.

In training camp in 1973, Brisker fought teammate Joby Wright, shattering Wright’s jaw and knocking out four of his teeth. Seattle coach Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics legend, grew weary of Brisker’s antics and demoted him to the Eastern League.

Even Brisker seemed to realize that he might be out of chances.

“I gotta grow up, I know that now,” Brisker told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Attitude is very important to me. I’m gonna turn my whole life around. I been carryin’ a big chip, felt it was me ’gainst the world. I got a bad rep, but I’m gonna live it down.”

Brisker never made it back to the NBA.

Uganda Undercover

Shortly after leaving basketball, Brisker began making trips to Africa. He told his girlfriend that he was getting into the import-export business. Was that code to cover for something more sinister?

Haywood recalled Brisker visiting him in New York in the mid-1970s and thinks he showed him a photo taken with Amin, but isn’t 100% certain on that.

Everyone has their theories on what happened to him.

“He went to Uganda and it was as a mercenary and he was fighting over there,” former teammate Tom Burleson said.

“People put the rumors out that he was caught up in that coup in Uganda,” Haywood said.

Even the medical examiner’s office isn’t certain he’s deceased.

“Essentially, we don’t consider him dead,” spokesperson James Callahan said. They only declared Brisker dead to settle his estate.

About the only certainty is that no one has seen Brisker in over 40 years.

#Covid-19 kills 572 South Africans in a day

Covid-19 testing kits

South Africa has reported the highest single-day #Covid-19 deaths at 572.

The number now brings the country’s death toll to 5,940. On Thursday, the country reported 3,150 new cases of the coronavirus from a sample size of 48,553.“As of today, a cumulative total of 394 948 confirmed #Covid-19 cases in South Africa have been recorded. The total number of tests conducted to date is 2,585,474 with 48,553 new tests conducted since the last report,” its Health Ministry reported.

The number of recoveries currently stands at 229, 175.However, of concern is the high number of fatalities that have been on the rise this week.Reuters reported that there is concern that the death toll in South Africa may be significantly higher than is being reported.

Researchers from South Africa’s Medical Research Council say the figures for natural deaths are far higher than usual – suggesting that thousands of coronavirus deaths may be going unreported.According to the news agency, scientists revealed that the Cyril Ramaphosa led-country has witnessed some 17,000 extra deaths from natural causes between early May and mid-July.

Experts have warned that South Africa could be staring at a crisis amid an appeal for grave diggers as cases shoot up.President Cyril Ramaphosa implemented a tough lockdown at the end of March, shutting shops, requiring people to stay at home and sending the army on to the streets to enforce it back when South Africa had only 400 recorded cases.

But a surge in poverty and unemployment in a country that already had too much of both spurred the government to lift restrictions well before the peak of infections.Currently, there are over 380,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Africa, with more than 181,000 recoveries and 9,500 deaths.

City Traders protest as Landlords demand rent for closed shops

Police patrolling in town after the protests.

Dozens of city traders have staged a demonstration protesting a decision by their landlords to block them from accessing their shops until they clear their rental arrears.

The traders claim that the landlords want them to pay rent for the months the shops were closed during the lockdown. The protesting traders converged at Mabirizi complex and Kikuubo Street drawing the attention of police, which used teargas to disperse them.

The affected traders operate in buildings such as premier, capital center, French plaza, Pentagon City Nabugabo, Qualicel bus terminal and Market Plaza among others.

Some traders told Eagle online that it is shameful for their landlords to demand for rent arrears well knowing they haven’t been working for close to four months.

Musa Lubega, a tenant on Pentagon Arcade that belongs to Drake Lubega explains that they haven’t been able to access their shops because the security guards can’t allow them in.

He says they have pleaded with their landlord for lenience in vain as he claims that the government is also demanding taxes from him.
Rodgers Bakesiga, a tenant on French Plaza that belongs to Mansur Matovu alias Yanga says that they have to first present a receipt showing that they have cleared the rent arrears before security guards allow them in.

Drake Lubega, the proprietor of Qualicel shopping center, says he couldn’t meet his tenants who turned up in large numbers because of the physical distancing requirement.

Lubega explained that he hasn’t reopened his buildings because he is still working on the Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs to avoid infection.

He also revealed that he is fully aware that his tenants don’t have money and will allow them to operate and get money to pay him.
Eagle online tried to contact Mansur Matovu for a comment but he neither picked nor returned calls from our reporter.

President Yoweri Museveni has repeatedly asked landlords in the past not to harass their tenants. He advised the two parties to come to an agreement on the rent arrears.

Dfcu Bank, Rabobank partner to enhance financial and digital inclusion in Uganda

dfcu Bank in partnership to enhance financial and digital inclusion in Uganda

Rabobank, Embassy of Kingdom of Netherlands (EKN) and dfcu Bank have signed a tripartite agreement to enhance financial and digital inclusion in Uganda.

The partnership implemented through a three-year Technical Assistance (TA) program was announced during a virtual signing ceremony attended by the Head of Rabo Partnerships Advisory, Mr. David Gerbrands, deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands to Uganda, Joris van Bommel and dfcu Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Mathias Katamba this morning.

According to Rabo Partnership’s CEO, Mrs. Marianne Schoemaker, Rabo Partnerships strongly believes in the opportunity and responsibility of financial institutions to foster sustainable economic development.

“We are happy to extend our technical assistance program for another three years. As a strategic partner dfcu has demonstrated its dedication to playing an integral role in increasing access to financial services for all customer segments. This is supported by its strategic ambition to be a universal bank, leading the market and using modern technologies going forward,” said Mrs. Schoemaker.

This partnership builds on the long-term association between Rabo Partnerships and dfcu Bank which started in 2014 with a five-year Technical Assistance program valued. The objective was to achieve structural improvement in access to financial services, deepening of agriculture-finance and increasing deposit mobilization in Uganda. The program was supported by The Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands.

dfcu Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Mathias Katamba noted that through the initial TA program dfcu made significant steps towards positioning itself as the bank of choice for agri-finance while consolidating its position as the leader in the SME market segment.

“We will be building on the achievements of the previous Technical Assistant program focusing on supporting the entire food and agriculture value chain by increasing access to finance, exploring digital ways to enhance distribution, build products and services for agri-business and also focus on enhancing digital inclusion by delivering value to customers through innovation,” added Mathias Katamba.

Deputy Ambassador Joris van Bommel underlined the strategic importance of this collaboration. The Netherlands is supporting and investing tremendously in the Food and Agricultural sector in Uganda. We do see an important role in stimulating the linkages between the increase of productivity and access to finance in the agricultural sector in Uganda.

While financial inclusion, as driven by digital financial services, through formal relationships with banks remains relatively low at 11% of all adults, it is a key driver to reducing income inequality and poverty while boosting household livelihoods, productivity, development and economic growth.

Museveni declared NRM sole candidate

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni

National Resistance Movement (NRM) has declared President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as sole candidate for the position of party chairman and Presidential flag bearer.

The announcement was made by the chairperson of the electoral commission of NRM, Dr. Tanga Odoi.

“I can declare to you and to Ugandans that NRM has one contender for National Chairman and that is Yoweri Kaguta Museveni” he said adding that The nomination papers were picked by his lawyers and Personal Assistant and paid Shs 10m as nomination fees for each position.

According to Mr.  Odoi, the former Makindye East MP John Ssimbwa who picked nomination forms failed to raise the required fees of shs 10million for nomination.

He said NRM primary elections for special interest groups at the village level, including the youth, women and elderly will be elected tomorrow, Friday.

In February, 19, 2019 the NRM under the national association of districts and lower local government councils, endorsed President Museveni, the NRM chairperson, as the sole party candidate in the 2021 presidential elections. The sole candidate resolution was passed at Chobe Safari Lodge.

Earlier this month, the Constitutional court threw out a constitutional petition filed by 11 NRM MPs challenging the challenging president Museveni’s sole candidature.

Last month, the electoral commission released a revised road map, banning all mass rallies ahead of the anticipated 2021 general elections. The elections according to chairperson of electoral commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, the move is in line with president Museveni’s directives peddled at curbing the spread of coronavirus.

MPs demand relief food for border districts

Gilbert Olanya

Members of Parliament from the border districts have asked Government to provide an alternative source of livelihood if it plans to keep the 42 districts under lockdown.

MPs said they were disheartened that during his 19th address on the Coronavirus pandemic, the President did not mention anything related to opening up border districts whose operations have been banned for four months.

Busia Municipality MP Godfrey Macho, said the situation in Busia was devastating, claiming that at least four of his constituents had died due to hunger. He called on the Government to urgently provide relief food to the people in the border districts.

“Yesterday when the President was making his address, I did not hear anything about border districts yet our people are dying. In Busia I know people who have died due to hunger; we better have an alternative for border districts that have not been working since March,” said Macho.

His counterpart from Amuru district, Gilbert Olanya said that it will be untenable for low income earners who he said are the majority in his district to go for extra months of no business and survive. He implored the President and the Minister of Health to move faster in addressing the plight of people in the border districts.

“Some of us who come from border districts were left wondering after the President’s address! People do not know what to do; let the President and the Minister come up clearly,  if possible in two or three days, and tell people what to do,” he said.

The Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, pledged to bring the proposal to prioritize border districts in the next phase of relief food distribution to the attention of Cabinet.

“Having listened to the outcry from border districts, we can ask the Government to prioritise border districts. I am making an undertaking to inform the Prime Minister to concentrate on all these districts,” said Nankabirwa.

She told Parliament that the Office of the Prime Minister was ready to present a paper on Phase II of relief food distribution for communities that have been affected by Covid-19, and that the matter will be handled at the next Cabinet meeting.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, tasked Nankabirwa, to update Parliament on the Government’s response towards food insecurity in the border districts next week.
