Makerere University is the top ranked university in East Africa and has been ranked fourth in Africa, coming immediately after three universities in South Africa.
According to Times Higher Education list for 2016, Makerere is preceded by the University of Cape Town, the University of Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University, all from South Africa.
In a recent interview with the EagleOnline Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof Sentamu Ddumba said the university academic staff had stepped up research and publication, thereby improving in the rankings.
Other universities in the top 15 are: the University of KwaZulu-Natal; University of Pretoria; the University of Ghana, the University of Nairobi; Suez Canal Alexandria and Cairo Universities in Egypt; the University of Marrakech Cadi Ayyad in Morocco; University of South Africa; the University of Ibadan and the Mohammed V University of Rabat in Morocco, respectively.
