The Uganda Revenue Authority has started registering landlords, ahead of a move to make thousands of them pay Rental Tax.
In a statement signed by URA Commissioner of Domestic Taxes Henry Saka, the authority begins registering landlords in 32 plush areas in the city.
Among the areas singled out is Ntinda, Najjera, Naalya, Kiwatule, Kisaasi, Kira, Kampala CBD, Naguru, Kololo, Nakasero, Kabalagala, Nsambya and Muyenga. Others are: Kansanga, Bunga, Ggaba, Buziga, Munyonyo, Makindye, Entebbe Road, Mbuya, Mutungo, Mutundwe, Bugolobi, Bukoto, Kamwokya, Lubowa, Mengo, Lungujja, Luzira, Kyengera and Butabika.
According to the statement, failure to register will attract legal sanctions.
It is not clear what the ripple effects may be, but all seems not well with tenants, as many argue that the development will drive several landlords into increasing rent.
