Kampala: Forum for democratic change (FDC) candidate Betty Muzanira has been sworn in as Rukungiri Woman MP after defeating National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Winfred Matsiko in a hotly contested by-election.
Muzanira polled 50,611 votes beating her close rival NRM party candidate Winfred Matsiko of who garnered 46,379 votes. The others two candidates Fabith Kukundakwe (PPP) and Prisca Sezi Mbaguta (independent) got less than 2000 votes.
On taking oath of allegiance and for Member of Parliament, the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga welcomed her to the August house and congratulated her for winning by-election.
“I welcome you to the 10th Parliament and these are your instruments, the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the Rules of Procedure,” said the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga.
Rukungiri woman parliamentary seat fell vacant after appellant court judges led by former Deputy Chief Justice, Stephen Kavuma nullified the election of National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) candidate Winfred Matsiko over voter bribery after electoral petition that was filed by FDC’s Betty Muzanira.
