Court of Appeal to handle 63 Cases in two weeks

The Court of Appeal is set to handle two sessions simultaneously where a total of 63 civil and constitutional matters will be concluded in a fortnight.

The cases to be handled consist of 26 Civil Appeals, 20 Constitutional Petitions and 17 applications.

According to the cause-lists issued by the Acting Assistant Registrar Court of Appeal, Mary Babirye, the Civil Appeals will begin today while the Constitutional Petitions will be handled from July 23.

Justices Kenneth Kakuru, Hellen Obura, Stephen Musota, Christopher Madrama and Remmy Kasule will handle the Constitutional Petitions while Justices Geofrey Kiryabwire, Elizabeth Musoke and Irene Mulyagonja will handle the Civil Appeals.

“…There will be a few minutes’ oral presentations in the court on set dates,” a notice to lawyers and parties reads in part.The Assistant Registrar says that the submissions should be filed both in hard copy and soft copy to their email.

The first day of hearing the Civil Appeals will be dedicated to handling a number of election petitions and applications. Some of the prominent cases to be heard include the application by Kato Lubwama versus Habib Buwembo seeking leave to appeal, Nusura Tiperu versus Kasiano Wadri and Another among others.

Ms Babirye emphasized the fact that the Justices are ready to hear the matters in spite of COVID-19 pandemic and the partial lockdown. She said the guidelines issued by the Chief Justice will be followed during the sessions.

The performance report shows that the appellate court completed 1,049 cases last Financial Year, surpassing its annual target of 970 cases.
