City Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo arrested

Must read

The founder, Executive Director and Lead Attorney at Chapter Four Uganda Nicholas Opiyo has been arrested.

According to sources, the human rights lawyer was picked from a Lamaro restaurant in Kamwokya. He was nabbed by plain clothes men who were averred to be security operatives. Opiyo was handcuffed, bundled into a tainted van and driven to an unknown location.

His arrest follows the breaking into his house in September where unknown individuals stole his laptop, phones, other electronics and several items.

He has been part of the group of the National Unity Platform (NUP) lawyers who are investigating individual security officers who were involved in the 18th and 19th November riots where at least 52 Ugandans were shot dead by security operatives.

The riots advanced from the arrest and detaining of the NUP Presidential Candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine. The lawyers are also working to establish where several NUP members are detained from.

In 2017, Opiyo won the German Africa Prize for defending civil rights and political freedom in Uganda. He is also known for coming up and criticizing Museveni’s leadership every time there were human rights violations.

Chapter Four is a non-profit legal and advocacy organization. The organisation mobilizes domestic, regional, and international legal expertise to provide cutting-edge public interest and strategic litigation and legal representation, first line legal support, research, and advocacy as a means to access justice, obtain redress for the abuse of civil liberties and protect human rights.
