Mayiga: Defeated LC1 leaders must hand over power

August 11, 2026/MENGO-Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has told defeated LC1 chairpersons to accept the election results and hand over power to the candidates chosen by voters.
Mayiga said refusing to leave office after losing an election could create tension and conflict within communities.
He made the remarks on Tuesday at Bulange Mengo while receiving Buganda Kingdom subjects from Kyadondo, Buddu, Ssingo and Busiro who were taking part in the Kabaka’s Luwalo Lwaffe programme.
The Katikkiro also condemned cases of violence and alleged irregularities reported during the recent village elections.
He said leadership must be based on the support of the people and warned that leaders who lack that support cannot deliver meaningful results.
“Leadership that is not based on truth and does not have the support of the people cannot produce meaningful results,” he said.
Mayiga congratulated candidates who won legitimately and urged them to serve all residents without discrimination based on tribe, religion or political affiliation.
He asked the new village leaders to prioritise security, sanitation and education, as well as encouraging residents to use their land productively.
The Katikkiro said leadership at the village level is important because it forms the foundation for leadership at higher levels of government.
The LC1 elections were mainly held on July 28, 2026, although repeat and residual polls were conducted in some areas.
While the Electoral Commission said the elections were generally peaceful, violence, disruptions and disputes were reported in more than 1,000 villages, leading to postponements or cancellations in some areas.
The incidents included clashes, injuries and deaths.
Mayiga’s warning comes amid reports that some defeated incumbents have refused to recognise the results or hand over their offices.
