Leaked emails put pressure on Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office insists he has done nothing wrong following the leaking of emails which appear to show his personal involvement campaign in donations when he was seeking to lead the governing African National Congress (ANC) in 2017.

The exclusive report by News24 suggests that Mr Ramaphosa was indeed consulted by his campaign team on some of the potential donors despite repeated denials that he was not involved in the details of his fundraising efforts.

Last year, Mr Ramaphosa told parliament that he had not received election campaign donations from a controversial local company during his bid to lead the ANC.

It later emerged that was not true. Mr Ramphosa apologised, and said he had been misinformed. Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko says Mr Ramaphosa did nothing illegal and no crime was committed.

“This is just smoke and mirrors. At the core of it, the president has not committed any crime,” she told local media on Monday.

Mr Ramaphosa campaigned on an anti-corruption ticket. He took over from President Jacob Zuma who had a litany of corruption allegations hanging over him, all of which he denies.

How the kidnap, torture and attack on people-power supporters started

NUP Principal Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

As political waves blow towards the 2021 general elections in Uganda , People Power, a political pressure group is experiencing nightmares of torture, kidnap and gruesome killing of its members.

Two weeks back, musician and ardent supporter of the Kalinda Michael aka Zigy Wyne was abducted and subjected to torture. His left eye was plucked out, two of his fingers cut off and parts of his body were burnt with a flat iron and dumped at Mulago hospital by unknown people where he spent a week before being identified by his family and friends and finally he was announced dead on Sunday.

In August 2018, the patron of people power who doubles as the MP for Kyadondo east, Robert Kyagulanyi, was brutally arrested and tortured before being leveled with charges of illegal possession of fire arms which were later dropped by general court martial.

His colleague, Mityana municipality MP Francis Zaake was beaten and later dumped at Rubaga hospital by unknown people. President Museveni later said the ailing MP who even traveled to India for further treatment escaped from police custody and charges of unlawful escape from police cells were leveled against him and later dropped by Arua magistrate’s court.

The two and 36 other Ugandan political leaders were later charged with treason in Gulu Magistrates court.

On that fatefully day Bobi wine’s driver, Yasin Nyanzi, was gunned down by security operatives a head of the Arua by-election where Bobi wine and his team had gone to converse votes for the Kassiano Wadri who won the seat. Police has since said the driver was killed by a stray bullet.

On 14th May, 2019 Raphael Walugembe coordinator and student of Nkozi University was shot dead in Nateete under suspicious circumstances. Around May 20th Mukisa Joshua William one of the People Power candidates in the Makerere University guild election was kidnapped, only to reappear with severe torture marks. Likewise, Ashburg Katto who also works with our media team was kidnapped only to be later dumped at a roadside.

On 22nd May, people power supporter and coordinator Okot P’ Bitek Junior sustained grave injuries after being shot in Amolatar district by a UPDF solider. On May 23rd, Ssebulime Rashid, a local leader in Kawempe Division was attacked and his house set ablaze. He sustained severe injuries. On 3rd June, our mobiliser from Busiro North constituency, Kibalama John Bosco was abducted and to date, his whereabouts are not known.

On 4th June, another coordinator, Lucky Bosmic Otim was severely brutalized by the police in Gulu district. On 7th June, an adrdent mobiliser and L.C. 5 Councilor for Buvuma district, Lukoma Stephen Ssalongo was shot dead.

Recently, the political pressure group revealed that its supporters are being arrested and detained for putting on either the red beret or t-shirts branded with their symbols or slogans.

According to Bobi Wine, during court sessions and rallies, countless young people are brutalized, arrested and illegally detained in the various cells around the country. Many have reported being beaten up from police stations and asked to denounce People Power if they want to live.

“Indeed last year, a well-wisher released a video recording of police officers at Kajjansi police post beating up 30 year old Kassim Migadde as they mocked him for associating with People Power.” He said

“At the end of April this year, when I was brutally arrested and illegally placed under house arrest, many young people who came out to peacefully protest against police brutality were arrested, tortured and many are still under detention. It was during that time that our friend and comrade, Nalongo Nana Mwafrika was manhandled by police officers, severely tortured, culminating in losing her uterus! Earlier, Justine Ssekandi, a female artiste who composed a song in support of our movement was abducted from Kamwokya, beaten to a pulp and dropped in the mortuary thinking she was dead – she spent several hours amongst dead bodies!,” he noted.

Bobi wine said these matters have however never been investigated by the authorities and perpetrators brought to book never yield much. Further, we have filed several court cases about these violations including the one about the murder of my driver Yasin Kawuma, but there has not been much progress. The Uganda Human Rights Commission has equally let us down in our efforts to put an end to untold levels of torture and brutality.

“Sometimes, officers handling them have disclosed that they have orders from above not to follow them up. Many colleagues including those I work with very closely have received calls from unknown people with clear threats of death, should they continue to support People Power! Only yesterday, music promoters Andrew Mukasa (Bajjo) and Abbey Musinguzi (Abtex) were violently arrested, and their music show blocked for their perceived association with me and People Power!” he narrated

I must add that many other people, who have been vocal in opposing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s regime of 33 years, regardless of whether they belong to his ‘party’ or other political formations have been equally assaulted, tortured and intimidated.

Three weeks back, former journalist and preacher, Joseph Kabuleta was abducted from a restaurant, bundled into a private vehicle and taken into a security facility where as he narrates, he was subjected to torture and intimidation.

Similarly, on 24th June, Oprah Phoebe Kiddu a youth leader in NRM party was abducted by security operatives from Mengo in Kampala and subjected to gross forms of torture for over three weeks until she was dumped on the roadside on 19th July. She has stated that her captors demanded that she stops opposing Museveni’s sole candidature as well as leading a pro-democracy pressure group.

“As we draw towards the 2021 elections, it is apparent that President Museveni is determined to silence any form of dissent using extreme violence. Although he came to power castigating former presidents Milton Obote and Idi Amin of torture and extra-judicial killings of their opponents, he seems determined to out-do their record in terms of committing unspeakable atrocities against the wanainchi,” Said Mr Kyagulanyi

He said, despite these grave and provocative violations against us and our people, they are committed to using peaceful means in our quest for political change in Uganda.

“We call upon all peace loving citizens of the world to join us in condemning horrendous violations against innocent citizens in Uganda. We thank you all for your support and solidarity thus far, and continue to call upon you to support us as we struggle for a better country which respects human rights and human dignity. We can and shall achieve this, God being our help,” he concluded.

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sell defender Laurent Koscielny to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux for a fee of up to 5m euros (£4.6m).

The 33-year-old centre-back is having a medical on Tuesday before completing a return to France after nine years with the Premier League club.

Frenchman Koscielny had a year left on his contract at Emirates Stadium and the Gunners wanted him to stay.

However, Koscielny had no intention of reversing his decision and was determined to secure a move to his home country.

As well as the medical, personal terms with Bordeaux still need to be finalised.

Talks also took place with Bordeaux’s Ligue 1 rivals Rennes.

The club also expect 20-year-old striker Eddie Nketiah to leave the club on a season-long loan, with Bristol City among a number of sides – including overseas teams – in talks to sign the England Under-21 international.

However, Arsenal have received no firm offers for defender Shkodran Mustafiand attempts to move the 27-year-old German on are further complicated by his desire to stay. – BBC

“I have sacrificed for this country, you can go and hang” – Gen Tumwine tells off MPs

Gen. Tumwine addressing the press in Mbarara

The minister of security, Gen Elly Tumwine and UPDF MP in parliament, has said he sacrificed for people of Uganda and anyone who ought not to hear it should go and hang.

“When we say we have sacrificed, some people get concerned, you can go and hang yourself but it is a fact,” Gen. Tumwine said on Tuesday at parliament.

Gen Tumwine said when he appeared before Rules Committee of parliament where he had been referred over allegations that he threatened Dokolo Woman MP, Cecilia Ogwal following a statement she made in parliament that he had pulled a gun on her in the Seventh Parliament.

He also appeared on an issue raised by Bukonjo West County MP, Godfrey Katusabe, that he Gen. Tumwine made the comments about the shoot-to-kill order following the deployment of the police and army to quell riots in Kasese district when Mirama abattoir was shutdown.

“It is not easy to serve for 33 years in Parliament. It takes discipline and action. Not anybody can achieve that. These allegations are a threat to peace and security and I implore Parliament to take interest for the good of the country,” he said.

He refuted allegations that he pointed a gun at Cecilia Ogwal in the corridors of parliament saying he was only showing her a picture he painted on how mosquitoes are killing Ugandans.

“I have been carrying a gun for many years and I know where and when to use it. That is why I don’t take it lightly when someone makes allegations that I pointed a gun at her,” he said.

Gen Tumwine told committee members that, Cecilia Ogwal has engaged in a systematic media campaign in tarnishing his name as this probe is ongoing, “this is serious contempt of parliament. She is just playing bad sectarian politics- Gen Elly Tumwine,” he said.

He said Cecilia Ogwal has continued to attack him through the media and continued to make very dangerous statements against the Uganda people’s Defence forces (UPDF) and Government however any statement against the army should not be taken lightly.

“What Hon Katusabe did was a deliberate attempt to injure my reputation and waste Parliament’s time. I know who Rebecca Kadaga is since I have been in Parliament longer than all those making allegations,” he said.

Ugandans react to Museveni giving out free biscuits

President Museveni in one of the best view points in Ntoroko district

Times for Ugandans have changed over the years as the video footage that emerged today on social media depicting the Head of State, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni merrily handing out biscuits to roadside children in the rain has sparked outrage from the Ugandan community.

The President Museveni recently embarked on a wealth creation tour around the country in a bid to reduce the unemployment levels has been to a number of districts including Kasese where he met with a number of locals and discussed the various ways Ugandans could be taught and equipped to be self reliant and create wealth.

However, images that surfaced today online have brought about a reaction from Ugandans contrary to what was expected from this Wealth creation tour. This is largely due to the contrast between the head of state who was heavily guarded from both the rain and the locals and the ill dressed children he served biscuits who also seemed cordial and unfancied by the president’s biscuits that were served from a trash can.

The scenario has been described as pretentious by Ugandans since the biscuits wouldn’t even satisfy a hungry dog let alone bring a solution to the dire situations in which so many of them live. The faux pas is further mitigated by the irony of the Presidents power or availability to change the lives of not only the children by the roadside but those of many Ugandans living in impoverished communities across the nation.

This was also echoed by other critics online who described the event as near comical and out of touch with Uganda’s reality. ‘#Ugandan president: #Ugandancitizens. He is under an umbrella: They are in the rain. He has shoes on: They are barefoot. He’s giving them biscuits: The biscuits are in a trash can.’ said a one Jennifa Ochwo, whilst a number of other online users continued to ridicule the act of charity by calling for the creation of a ‘Ministry of Biscuits.’

SC Villa to be relegated – Coach Asaph Mwebaze predicts the 2019/20 UPL table

Asaph Mwebaze

Ugandan football tactician Asaph Mwebaze has predicted his 2019/20 Uganda Premier League table.

Mwebaze has tipped Vipers to win the league ahead of KCCA and two of the promoted clubs to be relegated – Proline and Kyetume together with record champions SC Villa.

“The Championship fight will be amongst the three, Vipers, KCCA and URA. But Vipers will win it because Golola is back at his spiritual home. KCCA will burn out due to the champions league schedule and a young and inexperienced team. URA FC will blow hot and cold but won’t get to fourth gear. They have bought a new team that will take long to play in sync,” Mwebaze says in his Facebook post.

“Mbarara, police and Tooro will give the big boys a run for their money but will be satisfied finishing in the top six. Their financial muscle doesn’t allow them to push beyond that level.

“Bul FC, Onduparaka, Wakiso and Busoga will fight to get points to stay comfortable in the league, though they may start off the blocks like a man on steroids. Bul FC are more satisfied being in the league than achieving anything substantial. Onduparaka has lost very many players in the off season, this may be a testing time. Wakiso looks good on paper but the league is a phenomena. This season would best for them to establish themselves than having grandiose expectations. Busoga United will not offer much but can pick good points at home which might prove vital.

“The relegation battle is going to be a six prolonged affair. This will involve Express, Bright stars, Maroons FC, Proline, Villa and Kyetume. It would be or is unfair to Involve Proline in this mix but they I find it impossible not to, considering the strength of their squad and the age factor. Unless they learn to get results ugly and win away from home or avoid defeat, they are candidates for the scrap.

“The departure of Kajoba from Bright stars might have created a tricky and sticky situation at the club. The replacement might find problems with the squad the former coach assembled. To get them playing will not be easy. I see them in for a long hard season,” he says.

“Express, for sure are a pale shadow of themselves. They have lost almost all the squad of the previous season and have not been active in the market. “I don’t see them performing miracles, they may go down like they have almost done in the last three seasons.”

“Maroons FC after surviving the drop by the skin of their teeth, will unfortunately be in it again. They have appointed a new Coach which can either be a plus or a recipe for trouble. The blue print was discarded for the money transfers. Unless they can sustain this option they will struggle to the end.

“Villa the most successful club in Ugandan football history is going to be it the relegation battle again. For a club that was built to win, it’s a shame that their team is so unrecognizable! Villa now picks players in open try outs like a newly promoted side,”  he says.

For Kyetume, he says, “it’s an issue of somebody must go down! Nothing personal, but three teams must be relegated and usually a team from big league must go down. So Kyetume is my number one candidate for relegation.”

Asaph Mwebaze has previously managed Maroons, Onduaparaka FC and Nyamityobora FC in the Uganda Premier League and is currently out of employment.

Mwebaze’s Uganda premier league table standing prediction 2019/20;

  1. Vipers SC
  2. KCCA FC
  3. URA FC
  4. Mbarara
  5. Tooro
  6. Police
  7. Bull
  8. Onduparaka
  9. Wakiso
  10. Busoga
  11. Express
  12. Bright stars
  13. Maroons
  14. Proline
  15. SC Villa
  16. Kyetume

Bobi Wine mourns Ziggy Wine

Late Ziggy Wine

Kyadondo East Member Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has mourned Michael Kalinda, commonly known as Ziggy Wine an ardent supporter of People Power who succumbed to injuries sustained following his abduction.

Ziggy Wyne was reportedly abducted by unknown people on his way to the studios in Kamwokya on July 21, 2019, and later found dumped in Mulago Hospital with his eye plucked out and two fingers cut off. Ziggy Wine was a member of the Firebase Crew which is led by Mr. Kyagulanyi.

“Ziggy Wyne’s last days on earth were very painful. Those who kidnapped him did to him the worst things a human being can do to another- cut off his fingers, plucked out his eye, grossly tortured him, and left him to die a very painful death,” he said.

Bobi wine describe Ziggy Wyne as a solid member of the Firebase Crew, a hard-working young man, and ardent supporter of People Power looking forward to a better country.

“It is very painful that our brother had to go through this. Last night we visited the grieving family at Mulago and they are completely devastated. I don’t know how those who carry out these atrocities on the citizens of Uganda hope to pay back for the tears they have caused to so many families and communities,” he wrote on social media.

He said the state of our country is worrying, Ziggy is just one of the countless people who are kidnapped, tortured and murdered daily in our nation.

“We receive reports of many supporters disappearing, while others have died in questionable ways, including suspicious accidents. As we mourn our brother, may we resolve to work even harder to redeem our country from this terror? May God receive your soul in eternal glory?”
