‘Too rich to fight for Semwanga’s riches’ – family

BOU DRAGGED TO COURT: Uganda currency notes that were thrown into the grave of tycoon Ivan Sewmanga

Just hours after apologizing for fighting over late businessman Ivan Ssemwanga’s wealth, his family has now said they also have a lot of wealth.

Speaking Tuesday at the burial of Ssemwanga in Kayunga, his elder brother Sserunjogi Kinene said the family is not keen on sharing the spoils of the deceased’s wealth.

“A lot has been said that we are fighting over Ssemwanga’s wealth but this is not true. We can’t fight over the late’s money. We too got our money….” he said.

The statement was reiterated by Ssemwanga’s godfather, Herbert Luyinda, who, however pleaded with the public not to abandon them just because Ssemwanga is now dead.

“Ivan has made me a name. Everywhere I went, he would call me, ‘Dad’. Since then I was always respected everywhere. I would enjoy free drinks almost everywhere on his account…” he said.

“The first time he took me to South Africa, I spent over a month there when he was taking care of me. He took me around his schools and many other properties. He bought me everything I wanted, saying, ‘Dad, enjoy. These are the fruits of your sweat’. When I returned, he has been giving me $10,000 every year.”

Luyinda also used the opportunity to speak about Semwanga’s upbringing. He said that Semwanga’s father, George Semwanga Pinto Lutaaya died when he was just six years. He raised him and his sibling to the person he was at the time of his death.

Semwanga’s grandfather, Pinto Katula Lutaya Semwanga was a wealthy and prominent businessman in Kayunga.

Semwanga’s mother, Liize Semwanga was also from a wealthy family. She reportedly shared a father with former energy Minister Syda Bumba, who is currently the Nakaseke MP. Ssemwanga, while growing up, also spent time with his mother’s relatives who were predominantly Muslim. No wonder he had constructed two mosques in South Africa, it was revealed.

“At the time of his (father’s) death, Ivan was just six years old. But if that is what God has wished (Semwanga dying too), we shall move on with that.”

Luyinda pledged to take care of Semwanga’s children and those in South Africa, and contributed US$1000 dollars (about Shs3.5m) to the children’s fund.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of ‘Kwagalana Group’, Godfrey Kirumira contributed Shs5m, SK Mbuga – Shs6m and socialite Jack Pemba contributed Shs10million to the funeral of Semwanga.

City tycoons not culpable for land-grabbing – Ministry

ONE OF THE TYCOONS ABSOLVED BY GOVERNMENT: James Garuga Musinguzi

Over 20 tycoons who are in court battling a case involving over 200 acres of land allegedly belonging to Gertrude Nakiyimba in Ntende, Wakiso, were absolved of any culpability in land-grabbing by the authorities.

Prominent among the tycoons cited in the alleged land-grabbing is Gordon Wavamunno and his brother Jack Wavamunno; James Musinguzi Garuga among others.

But in a May 6, 2014 letter to the Commandant of the Land Protection Police Unit under the CIID, the then Commissioner for Land Registration Sarah Kulaata Basangwa, said the MRV 152, Folio 12 ceased to exist on February 7, 1962 and that any ownership claims had to be proven by claimants like Ms. Nakiyimba.

‘Whereas it is correct that this land at one time was registered in the names of Daudi Kasimbazi under the title known as Mailo Register Volume 152, Folio 12, the said person is no longer the registered proprietor,’ Ms Kulaata’s letter reads in part.

She added: ‘The title known as Mailo Register Volume 152 Folio 12 was converted to Busiro Block 453, Plot 5 on 7th February 1962. At that point in time, the MRV title became a closed Register and no further entries could be entered thereon. Closing of that Register is provided for under section 32 of the Registration of Titles Act.’

According to Ms. Kulaata Basangwa, issues of the said land were to resurrect 32 years later, in 1995, when the Administrator General was enjoined as an Administrator of the estate of the late Daudi Kasimbazi.  Interestingly, the name of Gertrude Nakiyimba does not appear anywhere on official documentation, until another  44 years since 1962, when her nephew Joseph Kanaabo claims the title was given to him in 2006.

‘From 1917, the MRV title currently held by Gertrude Nakiyimba does not appear until 2006 when the nephew Joseph Kanaabo claims that it was given to him. And this title only appears after the original administrators of the estate have died’, one of those involved with the matter told The EagleOnline, on condition of anonymity.

‘The above was the ownership from nineteen seventeen to nineteen sixty two. After microfilming and archiving, transactions continued to be registered on this land. I cannot guarantee that the ownership is still the same. Therefore, I advise you to search the correct ownership and the history of any other transaction that could have taken place,’ Ms Kulaata Basangwa quotes a Report issued earlier from the Surveys and mapping Department.

BACKGROUND

The said land in Ntende was registered in the names of Daudi Kasimbazi in 1917 under a title known as Mailo Register Volume 152, Folio 12. Kasimbazi died on 11/8/1959, and was succeeded by Daudi Mukasa, after which the Kabaka’s government intervened and on 30/9/1959, and distributed the said land.

Beneficiaries to the said land included Samwiri Mukasa Kityo Sekulya (108.88acres); Eriyasafu Kanabo Kimanje (65 acres) and 10 acres for the Bibanja holders.

Other beneficiaries included Daudi Mukasa (25 acres); Yowana Kabula (5 acres); and the ancestral land (Butaka) was allocated 15. 35 acres to be ‘controlled by Daudi Mukasa and the heads of Ssiga, Kasolya and Mutuba’.

Mike Dubke quits as White House communications boss

White House communications director has resigned only three months after being hired by President Donald Trump.

Mike Dubke, an experienced Republican strategist, was hired in March to revamp the White House media strategy.

As part of the shake-up, White House press secretary Sean Spicer will reportedly hold on to his position, but there will be fewer media briefings.

The reshuffle follows reports of disarray in the White House communications team.

Mr Dubke tendered his resignation on 18 May and is leaving on good terms, according to Axios News, a politics website which first reported his exit.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said Mr Dubke had agreed to stay on until Mr Trump returned from his overseas trip to the Middle East and Europe on Saturday.

“He has expressed his desire to leave the White House and made very clear that he would see through the president’s international trip,” she told Fox News.

According to news website Politico, Mr Dubke, 47, provided few details on his departure in an email to friends.

The reasons for my departure are personal,” he wrote, “but it has been my great honor to serve President Trump and this administration.

“It has also been my distinct pleasure to work side-by-side, day-by-day with the staff of the communications and press departments.

“This White House is filled with some of the finest and hardest working men and women in the American Government.”

‘War room’

President Trump is reported to have been frustrated with White House messaging amid congressional and FBI investigations into whether his campaign officials colluded with an alleged Kremlin plot to help him win the presidency.

He recently raised the idea of scrapping the daily news briefing altogether and holding one himself every fortnight.

According to Axios, Mr Trump plans to follow through on that plan by taking more questions directly from the media.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer – who is expected back at the media podium on Tuesday – will reportedly hold fewer on-camera briefings.

White House rallies to Kushner’s defence

How Trump’s Russia trouble unfolded

Mr Dubke, who previously worked as senior partner for Republican political advertising company Crossroads Media, was not part of the Trump campaign and was not seen as a loyalist.

The White House has not named a successor for Mr Dubke.

However, Corey Lewandowski, former campaign manager for Mr Trump, was spotted leaving the White House on Monday.

Mr Lewandowski was forced out in June last year amid reports of a power struggle with Jared Kushner, Mr Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser.

However, Mr Kushner is now reportedly under scrutiny as part of the FBI’s investigation into alleged Moscow influence that is engulfing Mr Trump’s fledgling presidency.

According to reports, the combative Mr Lewandowski could rejoin the administration soon to lead a White House “war room” to counter the narrative that Mr Trump is too close to Russia.

The fight-back strategy could include hiring more lawyers to handle the allegations, according to reports.

Ivan Ssemwanga’s death unites sworn enemies

Judith Heard and others at the vigil.

The death of singer Juliana Kanyomoozi’s son in 2014 will always be remembered for having re-united sworn enemies; Juliana and Irene Namubiru who surprised many when she offered the former a shoulder to lean on at a time when she needed it most.

Ever since that time, the two have remained friends, very close friends and of recent they even attend social events together.

Well, the death of socialite Ivan Ssemwanga has also united Zari and her sworn enemy, socialite Judith Heard.

On getting the news of Ssemwanga’s death, Heard was among the first people to send condolences to Zari.

“Words cannot express my sadness. May the comfort of God help you through this difficult time,” she wrote.

This came as a shock to many.

Later in the day she posted on her social media, “It is true that God also needs good people to manage his work in heaven. Otherwise why would He have called you (Ssemwanga) all of a sudden? He must have known that you are such a great person and can handle any situation. REST IN PEACE IVAN,” she wrote.

Unlike many who grieve with others only on social media, she took it a step further by attending Ssemwanga’s vigil, and spent the night there.

For every long time Zari and Judith Heard haven’t been seeing eye to eye, with each claiming is richer than the other. Their beef peaked when both took to the same business, selling clothes and Jewelry. Zari’s shop was at Garden City while Judith Heard’s was on Forest Mall. Unfortunately both shops closed, literally sending the two into parties.

Zari has been hosting the ‘Zari All White Party’ while Judith Heard hosted ‘Arab Money Party’ almost on the same dates.

Socialite Pemba disappoints fans at Ssemwanga Church service

As hundreds turned up at Namirembe Cathedral for the service of late socialite, Ivan Ssemwanga, it later turned out that not all who came were purposely there for the Church service.

A section of people appear to have come expecting to ‘milk’ money out of showy socialites who were expected to show up at Church.

Indeed many socialites turned up and among them included Jack Pemba, Godfrey Kirumira, Bebe Cool and his wife Zuena to mention a few. But of the group, perhaps audience knew Pemba as the most generous.

As soon as the service ended, they swarmed the car, expecting to pick money on a first come, first serve basis. It wasn’t long that Pemba arrived. He entered his car, a convertible and lowered the roof, further arousing the anxiety of the masses that were surrounding his car, expecting him to throw money in air as he has been known.

To their disappointment, he just started the car, the disappointed masses couldn’t just let him go as they blocked his way and it took the intervention of his bouncers that a passage was created for him.

He drove off as the public taunted him that they were to report him to police for he is a wanted man.

Meanwhile, Bebe Cool and his wife also turned up at Church in his eight year old Hummer in what appeared like trying to live to the theme of the day. Perhaps having realized that his car was more old compared to the cars around, he parked behind other vehicles as majority of the cars in the Church’s parking lot were new and more luxurious.
