Gashumba cons ‘Nkuba Kyeyo’, fired from NBS TV

CONMAN? Frank Gashumba taking porridge at the burial of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi on Tuesday.

If you fail to see Frank Gashumba’s show this weekend on NBS TV, it isn’t the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to blame as has always been the case.

Indeed, available information indicates the controversial social critic has reportedly conned a ‘Nkuba Kyeyo’ chap of millions of shillings in the name of helping needy people.

The conned man is said to be a one Ben Nyombi, formerly a journalist and currently staying in the US. Apparently, while watching NTV Nyombi saw a limbless lady who cultivates using her legs and immediately posted on Facebook asking for a person who knew her. Nyombi claims the first person to get into his inbox was Gashumba.

“He assured me that he knew the lady. I sent him money, whose sum I won’t reveal for now to take to the lady. Few days later Gashumba called me, informing me that he had bought for her household items,” Nyombi posted on social media.

Again, Nyombi says Gashumba requested him to send money to buy the woman a boda boda to help her with daily income. “I told him I didn’t have the money he wanted.”

Another incident was of a street vendor, a woman carrying a baby on her back who was thrown on to a pickup truck in a gruesome manner by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials.

Again, Nyombi claims he posted on Facebook asking for a person who knew the lady in the video that had gone viral. Still, he says, it was Gashumba who got into his inbox first. Nyombi sent him money to give to the lady.

However, Nyombi claims Gashumba later called him saying that he needed Shs5million to get her a lawyer since she had been arrested. Nyombi says he told Gashumba he didn’t have the money.

However, the money that has made him let the cat out of the bag is the last sum he allegedly sent Gashumba.

On this occasion Nyombi says Gashumba contacted him, saying the President (Museveni) was soon visiting the US; Miami and New York among other places, and that there were still six vacant slots on the President’s entourage.

Gashumba reportedly asked Nyombi to recommend a person of his choice to be included on the list of those travelling with the ‘big man’. When Nyombi told Gashumba his choice of person, the said person had no passport.

Subsequently, Gashumba reportedly told Nyombi to send Shs500, 000 for an express passport and the money was sent.

He later reportedly told him that for the name to be included, he had to pay State House officials Shs6million. Nyombi sent Shs2million and promised to send the balance the following week. However, he became suspicious when Gashumba started phoning him from minute to minute asking for the balance.

This reminded him of a time he had read about Gashumba conning people. He ‘Googled’ his name and found several complaints about Gashumba conning other people.

This forced him to have a second thought about his plans. He demanded Gashumba to refund his money but all he had got were lies until when he felt he couldn’t take it in any more.

“When I contacted him this week asking for the money, he told me ‘we are still mourning’. This left me wondering what had been his contribution towards the burial of the late AIGP, Kaweesi. Was he the one that bought the coffin in which he was buried?”

As an alternative, Nyombi contacted NBS TV boss Kin Kalisa and narrated to him the whole story. In response, NBS TV which hosts his show has scrapped it.

Nyombi has further vowed to make sure that Gashumba doesn’t appear on any other local station again.

“I am not doing this to embarrass Gashumba but I just want to save the hundreds of unsuspecting poor people who might fall victim,” he says.

Nyombi is just one of the several people who have decried Gashumba for conning them especially in the name of promising them jobs in the Middle East.

Fans ‘force Trevor Noah to visit Uganda’

FORCEFUL VISIT: Some of the creative works on 'Trevor Noah's visit'.

It all started with Daily Show Host and Comedian Trevor Noah discrediting an article by local tabloid, the Matooke Republic that claimed the US-based celebrity comedian was on a visit in Uganda for the Culture Week.

Indeed, on March 23 Noah denied he had any plans of visiting the ‘Pearl of Africa’.

This was enough to tickle Ugandans on Twitter who took to the hashtag now trending ‘Trevornoahvisitsuganda’, urging and persuading Noah to reconsider his decision as they bombarded him with memes, local cuisines and countless images depicting beautiful sceneries.

In their creativity, the Ugandans even edited him into various locales that would best suit a tourist of his stature.

The trend has kept on for a while with even public figures such as Allen Kagina, and, businesses and organisations Nice House of Plastics, NBS TV joining in the melee in a bid to get Noah here!.

Umeme Ltd. even went a step further and threatened ‘heavy load shedding’ should Noah disappoint his enthusiastic Ugandan fans!

Singer Ronald Mayinja, Betty Nambooze launch ‘war’ against Mao

WANTS MAO OUSTED! Mukono MP Betty Nambooze, singer Ronald Mayinja and other DP 'rebels' during the launch of their 'war' against DP boss Nobert Mao

Following the successful entry of comedian Kato Lubwama and singer Judith Babirye in politics, struggling musician, Ronald Mayinja has also joined the ‘dirty game’.

Like Lubwwama, the ‘Tuli Kubunkenke’ hitmaker has joined the Democratic Party (DP), but under the ‘rebel’ faction led by Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze, and the singer was among the people that turned up at the launch of the ‘Bad DP’ faction Friday morning in Kabalagala.

The ‘Bad DP’, which draws parallels with Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s Suubi faction, is opposed to DP President Norbert Mao’s authority.

The two groups accuse Mao and his deputy, Mukasa Mbidde, of ‘selling the DP’ to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party President Yoweri Museveni.

“At the moment, DP as a party is a ship in the hands of pirates led by Mr. Mao and Mr. Mukasa Mbidde who are steering it on a wrong course. They are determined to wreck it and then jump ship to the safety of other boats on the stormy sea,” said Nambooze at the launch.
Interestingly, by the time of joining Nambooze, Mayinja had pledged allegiance to Museveni, having traversed the country with him during the campaigns.

Religion and tribe: the ‘magic bullets’ for Uganda’s cabinet appointments

Uganda's founding President and Makerere University alumni Dr Apollo Milton Obote. Dr Obote led a strike at makerere and was to be expelled from university before completion of his studies there.

Uganda attained Independence on October 9, 1962, with Apollo Milton Obote becoming the first Prime Minister. At the time Obote named a Cabinet of 31 Ministers and Deputy Ministers.

It is instructive to note that despite not being the official government position, over the years two factors: religion and tribe, have played a big role in determining how the ‘political cake’ is distributed.

As a result of the ‘unofficial policy’, the competing interests of the Catholic-domintaed Democratic Party and the Protestant-dominated Uganda Peoples Congress and its ally the Kabaka Yekka, in the first post-Independence Cabinet 18 of the 31 ministers were Protestants. Of these, six were from the Central region (Buganda); four from Eastern region); eight from the Western region and three from the Northern region.

Similarly, during the Obote II government from December 10, 1980 to May 27, 1985, given that the same differences between the DP and UPC still obtained , there were 17 Protestant Ministers in the 20-member Cabinet. Of these three came from Northern region; six from the Eastern region; three from Central region and five from the Western region.

Today, in the first of seven-part series we bring you the Protestant men who served as Ministers during Obote’s two regimes that spanned a cumulative total of 13 years. Interestingly, there were no women in both Cabinets.

Gambia to probe Jammeh finances

FINANCES TO BE PROBED: Former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh

Gambia has said it will probe the finances of former President Yahaya Jammeh, who fled into exile in January to Equatorial Guinea after a rule that began in 1994 when he seized power in a coup.

Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou said in a statement the government would also set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and offer reparations to victims of Jammeh’s government, which is accused of the torture and killing of perceived opponents.

Jammeh lost an election in December to the now-President Adama Barrow but refused to accept the result. He only stepped down after pressure from regional leaders who sent troops to Gambia to force him to leave.

Since his departure, Barrow’s government has taken steps to restore the rule of law and strengthen the judiciary.

“A Truth and Reconciliation Commission with appropriate reparations for victims will be set up within the next six months and public hearings will be expected to commence by the end of the year,” Tambadou said.

The government would first study other such commissions.

South Africa established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission after apartheid ended in 1994, and other African countries have set up similar bodies.

The aim is to encourage people to confess crimes committed under the previous government and for victims to air injustices they suffered. Reparations can also be set.

Uganda at ‘breaking point’ from S. Sudan refugees – UN

The United Nations has warned that Uganda is at a ‘breaking point’ as almost 3,000 refugees pour into the country every day from South Sudan, fleeing violence and famine in the world’s youngest country.

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, appealed to the international community for assistance saying that with present rates of arrival, the numbers of refugees in Uganda would surpass a million before the middle of 2017.

“We are at a breaking point. Uganda cannot handle Africa’s largest refugee crisis alone,” Grandi told reporters in Kampala.
Ruhakana Rugunda, Uganda’s Prime Minister, said the surge in refugees had placed ‘enormous strain’ on public services and infrastructure, with food and clean water running short.”The lack of international attention to the suffering of the South Sudanese people is failing some of the most vulnerable people in the world when they most desperately need our help.”

“We continue to welcome our neighbours in their time of need but we urgently need the international community to assist as the situation is becoming increasingly critical,” Rugunda said.

The UN says it urgently needs more than $250m to support South Sudanese refugees in Uganda.

Last year, only 33 percent of the $649m needed for South Sudan was funded.

Since July 2016, some 572,000 new arrivals who have poured into Uganda in desperate need of safety, with 172,000 arriving there this year alone.

Babar Baloch, a spokesman for UNHCR, said that the international community had ‘failed’ Uganda as it dealt with ‘Africa’s largest refugee crisis’.

“Inside South Sudan there is insecurity, food shortages and gross human rights abuses. This is what has prompted these people to flee to Uganda and safety.”

Baloch said Uganda’s approach to dealing with refugees had been among the most progressive on the continent, with the government and host community displaying outstanding generosity towards people fleeing war and conflict.

Arriving refugees receive small plots of land in host communities to help support themselves.

“The government is open to welcoming refugees and the host nation is sharing land and resources with the South Sudanese,” Baloch said.

“But the world is failing the refugee hosts and the world’s most vulnerable refugees as well.”

At least 50,000 people have died in South Sudan’s civil war, which began in December 2013 as a result of a struggle for power between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.

The pair signed a shaky peace deal a year ago, but fighting has continued.

An estimated 100,000 people are currently experiencing famine, and according to South Sudan’s government and UN agencies, another one million people are on the brink of starvation.

Big Brother Naija: TBoss, Debie-Rise, Bassey and Bally up for possible eviction

EVICTEES? Bassey, Debbie-Rise, Tboss and Bally are up for possible eviction.

Palpable tension seems to have returned to the Big Brother Naija house as this week’s nomination show returns previously nominated housemates, TBoss and Debie-Rise as two of the nominees up for possible eviction. They were joined by Bassey and Bally who were both exempted from eviction last week.

This week’s nomination show is predicated on Sunday’s Head of House task which saw the emergence of Efe as new Ultimate Head of House. Before the nomination proper commenced, Biggie instructed all the housemates to make a presentation to the ultimate HoH, and make a strong case for self on why they should not be evicted.

As earlier promised during eviction show, Biggie mandated Efe to make use of his privileged position to nominate four housemates that he will like to be evicted next Sunday. In this particular order, Efe nominated TBoss, Debie -Rise, Bassey and Bally, during a diary session with Biggie.

When asked by Biggie whether his choice of housemates was motivated by sentiment or strategy, Efe who appears to be on the spot, said: “I think it was both sentiment and strategy. This is because I prefer to have some of the housemates I am close with to get to the final while those I am not comfortable with should go.”

As the show progresses, the competition seems to get stiffer. Ebuka Uchendu, the show’s host has confirmed that one housemate will leave the house come next Sunday. Who will be the next housemate to leave the house come Sunday?

On Monday, popular producer and CEO of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy visited the housemates as a celebrity guest and he advised the housemates in the company of his new signees, the DNA Twins, including a studio engineer. The songwriter and producer got the housemates to build a makeshift studio where they all worked on the official theme of Big Brother Naija, See Gobbe.

The seventh eviction show holds on Sunday, 26 March. To save your favorite housemate, viewers in Nigeria should text the word “Vote” followed by the housemate’s name to 32052. While for the rest of Africa, follow the AfricaMagictv official account on WeChat and click on the menu option ‘BBNaija’ and select your preferred housemate. Voting closes at 19:00 CAT on  Saturday.

NSSF to recognise journalists in Torch Awards

TO RECOGNISE JOURNALISTS: NSSF Managing Director Richard Byarugaba speaking at the launch of Torch Awards today.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has called upon individuals and institutions that are making a positive impact on communities to submit their proposals for the annual Torch Awards where a total of Shs80 million financial support is up for grabs.

The financial support will be given to the winning projects at the Annual Torch Awards, an initiative by NSSF aimed at recognising individuals and institutions like the media that are transforming their communities and have made a positive impact through those projects.

WE ARE HERE WITH 80 MILLION: NSSF MD Richard Byarugaba addresses guests at the launch of Torch Awards

Speaking at the launch NSSF Managing Director Richard Byarugaba said the awards are premised on the fact that as a socially responsible organisation, the Fund has a duty to contribute to the wellbeing of the communities in which it operates.

Byarugaba said the Fund is now calling for proposals from individuals and institutions that have positively transformed communities to compete for the Torch Awards project funding.

“To qualify for the awards this year, projects should focus on one of four thematic areas, namely; Youth, Education, Health and the Disadvantaged. In addition, the projects should be not-for-profit, non-partisan, impactful, benefit a wider community and should not be funded by local or international charities and Non-Governmental Organisations,” says Byarugaba.

This year the Fund has also introduced an additional Torch award category for journalists whose reporting has positively impacted lives of the underprivileged.

“We feel there are great stories in our communities that have inspired community interventions to assist the underprivileged members of society and journalists are at the forefront of bringing these stories to life, hence this new category. To qualify, journalists will be required to submit their work about a project they reported on that has greatly impacted the community in which it operates. The top two winning journalists’ entries will be rewarded with equipment that will advance their work,” said Byarugaba.

He added that the Fund will engage journalism and communication professionals to evaluate and select the best entries for the new category.

Community based organisations or individuals and journalists have up to April 21, 2017 to submit their proposals and work through e-mail at csr@nssfug.org.

Over the last two editions, six projects have benefited including 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation (40-40), Childcare and Rescues Home (Makindye), Youth and Women Empowerment Foundation (Kabarole), Mbale Maternity Home, Kisozi Orphan Support Center – Gomba, and Children of Uganda- Mukono, among others.
