Here is Lindah Lisa’s Valentine’s Day message to NTV’s Douglas Lwanga

Valentine’s Day is known as a day when lovers openly express their love and romance for each other.

Well, the day didn’t leave out ex-Club Silk’s PR, Lindah Lisa and NTV’s Douglas Lwanga who have kept their relationship a secret for a very longtime.

But perhaps yesterday was too much for Lisa to keep to herself what’s at her heart. She poured her heart out for Douglas through a love message shared on social media.

“Being in a committed relationship is so fun like you just hang out with your best friend all the time and you never stop loving each other!!! From the happiness family to yours, happy valentine’s day y’all,” she wrote, further reminding lovers to remember to love each other every day, any time and not only on Valentine’s Day.

The message was accompanied by a photograph of the couple together.

Meanwhile, the couple has a child together, Donnell Larris who is a month shy of making four years.

Kenyan striking doctors released unconditionally

Raila Amollo Odinga

Seven doctors’ representatives who have been serving a one-month jail sentence have been released unconditionally.

The release today comes after their colleagues, through lawyers James Orengo, Philip Murgor, Mutula Kilonzo Junior and others successfully appealed their jailing.

Court of Appeal Judge Wanjiru Karanja ordered that the doctors be released immediately as negotiations towards the ending of the strike that has persisted for three months continue.

The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commissioner have been tasked to lead the negotiations.

Among those present in court during the ruling was opposition leader Raila Odinga who had early indicated NASA lawyers would be tasked to ensure the jailed doctors are released.

The seven were sent to jail after they failed to call off the strike as directed by the court as a pre-requisite to holding negotiations.

Kenyans were angered by the incarceration and blamed the government for apparently harassing doctors and refusing to honour a CBA it signed.

On Tuesday February 14 Aden Duale accused Raila of playing blame games and even offering ODM lawyers to intervene in the doctors’ strike drama yet the 2013 CBA was passed when he was the Prime Minister.

“The illegal CBA was created when Raila served as Prime Minister. The health docket was led by his close ally, supporters and appointee Anyang’ Nyongo,” he said.

He further stated that Raila has taken a stand with the KMPDU bosses and not with the Kenyans who are suffering from the ongoing strike.

Gambia President to swear in Saturday

Gambian President Adama Barrow

Adama Barrow is to be inaugurated as President of Gambia at a ceremony at the national stadium on Saturday.

This will be the second time Barrow is swearing-in, after the January ceremony in neighbouring Senegal, following the refusal of then President Yahaya Jammeh to step down after losing elections in December last year.

Meanwhile, Gambia’s new government has told the United Nations it will remain in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The administration has reversed the previous regime’s plan to withdraw from the tribunal, announced in October after Jammeh accused the world body of ignoring alleged war crimes of Western nations and seeking only to prosecute Africans.

But President Adama Barrow, pledged during the campaign to undo Jammeh’s decision, restore human rights and repair the country’s badly-damaged foreign relations.

“As a new government that has committed itself to the promotion of human rights… we reaffirm The Gambia’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court,” said a statement read on state television and radio.

The statement added Gambia’s foreign minister notified UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the decision in a letter last month.

The announcement constitutes a rare victory of late for the embattled tribunal. South Africa and Burundi also signalled last year they would quit the ICC and African Union member states earlier this month endorsed an unspecified ‘strategy of collective withdrawal’.

Jammeh fled to Equatorial Guinea last month under regional military pressure after refusing to accept his defeat to Barrow. Equatorial Guinea does not have an extradition treaty with Gambia.

Why I will miss Crane Bank

Crane Chambers, formerly headquarters of Crane Bank.

In around 2012, a friend convinced me to open an account with a local commercial bank that ‘understands’ the inner workings of a society that is laden with poor people struggling to get on their financial feet.

At the time I had just returned to Uganda and had little or no understanding of the workings of the financial sector here, so I asked that particular friend to take me through all that I needed to know about banking in Uganda and then asked him to help me make a suggestion.

At the time the options of local commercial banks that easily come to mind included Centenary Bank, Stanbic Bank, National Bank of Commerce and Crane Bank, the latter which my friend recommended.

As I am wont to do before taking a decision that touches on the fringes of finance, I carried out a ‘background check’ on the four banks and zeroed in on Crane Bank. Here the Internet came in handy, revealing that Crane Bank had over 20 branches spread across the country, coming only second to Stanbic Bank.

The first information that calmed my nerves was that Crane Bank was one of the ‘100 best taxpayers’ in Uganda, contributing over 40 billion shillings to the country’s coffers annually. This trend, I am told, had been consistent for about 8 years earlier, and was to continue for the next three years.

Much as Uganda’s economy is not that gigantic, for an indigenous commercial bank to contribute huge sums to the national coffers is a sign that it is afloat and buoyant, meaning its management is sound. This also meant that the depositors’ monies were safe.

According to my friend, a businessman in Kikuubo, the branch there had ‘changed’ the rules of the game, providing services way beyond the ‘official hours’ in order to serve the clientele in Uganda’s business hub.

Against such a background, he said, banking in Kikuubo was made easy, enabling the businessmen to carry out transactions without the fear of losing money to planned thefts of money while in transit.

That aside, banking with Crane Bank was such an experience, what with tellers working round the clock to make sure the services were satisfactory.

Indeed, at one time someone sent me money though the Western Union, but I did not have all the required identification to successfully carry out the transaction. However, when I approached the Manager at the Crane Bank Bugolobi branch, he was kind enough to help me with his phone so I could call the sender in the US for clarification and indeed, we both spoke to the sender and after that the Manager led me to his office and called the teller to bring the amount indicated. I only handed in my employee Identity Card, and in a flash the money was with me! A real change in approach to modern-day banking.

That single act, when told to my other family members, endeared them to the Bugolobi branch, a place where we have all been carrying out all our transactions since that memorable day when the Manager showed me a different approach to banking.

Fare thee well Crane Bank, for the time you served Ugandans, you surely changed the face of banking Uganda!

I will always remember ‘growing to serve, serving to grow’.

Zari, Diamond Platinumz earn big from ‘unveiling’ son’s face

HAPPIER DAYS: Zari Hassan, hubby Diamond Platnumz and baby Nillian Dangote.

Socialite Zari Hassan and her husband, Diamond Platnumz on Saturday unveiled the face of their youngest child at a lavish party that was held in Dar es Salaam.

The venue and the attires of the people in attendance all proved the financial prowess of the couple behind the party.

And it didn’t end at just that, Zari took it a step higher by throwing money for all to pick. Well, if you thought it was that much which was spent on the party, you are mistaken.

CELEBRITY KID: Baby Nillian Dangote

Apparently, that’s just a tip of the iceberg! Indeed, reports indicate that the couple earned about Shs330million from the party. This came in form of money earned through endorsements for their child, Nillian Dangote.

Among the companies whose products were endorsed during the unveiling of Nillian’s face include; Vodacom, GSM and Dizzim Online.

Another company, Baby Shop, will be paying the baby Shs1,605,350 a month in return for dressing the baby.

As a norm, Muslims keep the faces of their kids a secret until when they are 40 days old.  To fulfill this, the celebrity couple held their son Prince Nillian’s first biggest party which they called 40 Special. The party was to finally reveal his face to the public for the first time, 40 days after being born. The two were dressed in some really expensive attires, making them look like royalty.
