Kadaga directs rules committee to investigate media stories

Keenly watching events, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has today directed rules, discipline and privileges committee of Parliament to investigate some of the stories that she deemed painted Parliament in a negative light.

Kadaga said that such negative stories published by media houses and Journalists accredited to cover Parliament are false and tainting the image of the August House.

“Media continues to paint a negative image of Parliament, this is intentional so the chairman of the rules committee needs to look at these publications and charge them on contempt of Parliament. If they are found guilty, the editors should appear before the committee and apologize” said Kadaga

The debate arose from the Speakers’ communication after she called out media houses like Monitor Publications Limited, the publishers of Daily Monitor, The Observer and Red pepper accusing them of publishing false news about Parliament.

Aruu County South legislator, Samuel Odonga Otto informed Parliament of his experience while suing media on grounds of defamation

“When I went to Court to sue, some media houses ran to me saying they will finish me, I told them that I was already finished, The public relations should sue media houses that publish false stores, make them lose money” he said.

Supporting Otto, Kabula County MP, James Kakooza said any media house that publishes false news should go to hell.

One of the stories that had MPs are accusing the media of running is the Shs68 million set aside for their burials.

“The Shs68 Million is not eaten by the dead MP, it is the relatives, coffin makers, so what is wrong with that?” said MP Odonga Otto

Kadaga also cautioned MPs who are willing to speak to media on issues that they are not conversant about. “Some of you MPs talk a lot, commenting on things you don’t understand, you should stop it.”  Kadaga said

Jalia Bintu, the Masindi district woman MP called on her colleagues to demand that government gives them Shs500 Million for brand news rather than buy old cars.

Pablo is nominated for the competition along with other comedians from all over the world including fellow countryman Patrick Idringi aka Salvador.

The winner of the competition will be the ‘comedy peace ambassador’ and will walk away with the grand prize of US$100,000 (approx. UgShs350million). The chosen clip below is what will make it or break it.

“My call to you is to watch the 3 minute video via the link (http://indi.com/7fz6m), LIKE IT and SHARE IT. You will have voted for yours truly by just doing that. If we managed to beat Comoros, we can beat the world at this…,” he added.

UNRA top boss faces nepotism allegations

GAVE ULTIMATUM FOR WEALTH DECLARATION: IGG Irene Mulyagonja.

It is increasingly becoming difficult for top public servants to escape allegations of favouring their kin and kith, when it comes to the prickly issue of employment in Uganda.

And so early last week a top official at the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) was on the spotlight for allegedly giving jobs to four relatives, to work in UNRA, one of the best-paying parastatals in Uganda.

The matter of allegedly hiring relatives, commonly known as nepotism, has now been put at the discretion of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), who has since started investigations into the allegations that will, if found true, further tarnish the image of the institution that is charged with overseeing the development of the road sector in Uganda, a task heaped on the UNRA Executive Director Allen Kagina and members of her team, most of them newly-recruited.

It should be recalled that in May last year, following scathing allegations of massive corruption at UNRA, the institution laid off over 900 workers in the biggest-ever single public sector restricting drive and consequently embarked on a new recruitment drive. It is this new process that has now come under scrutiny.

And sources within UNRA told this Website that ‘a top boss’ brought the four relatives from Canada and posted them in the lucrative planning and administration department.

“It is sad that competent people were sacked under the pretext of sweeping corrupt officials but what is happening here is dangerous. How can four members of one family be recruited in one department as if they are no other qualified Ugandans?” a source told EagleOnline.

Inspectorate of Government Spokesperson, Ali Munira confirmed investigations were underway but said the inquiry is still at a tender stage for her to divulge details.

“We are working on it but as you are aware, we only received the complaints two weeks ago but investigations are going on,” Ms Munira said on phone.

Meanwhile, sources at UNRA have intimated to the EagleOnline that all new projects have been put on halt to clear the way for the completion of all ongoing projects.

Efforts to contact UNRA spokesperson Mark Ssali over the developments were, by press time, futile.

‘My life is in danger’, says woman who ‘brought back’ Aine

DIDDLED? Ms Ali Alwi, who says she was instrumental in the return of former Mbabazi aide Christopher Aine.

Its like stuff extracted from Agent James Bond 007’s series by Ian Fleming, involving conspiracy theories, intrigue, intimidation, backstabbing, double-crossing, women and all that goes with espionage.

And this is part of the life Ali Alwi, the woman who claims to have brought back former fugitive Christopher Aine, the former chief bodyguard of presidential candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi from self-exile in Tanzania, is living: she says her life is in danger!

According to Ms Alwi, she together with Aine were the inner handlers of Go-Forward team and presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi, a responsibility that allegedly encouraged the police to draft her, while conversely, her colleague Aine was forced to go into hiding after getting involved in an altercation in Ntungamo town with supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) during the presidential campaigns in December 2015.

And, narrating her ordeal to EagleOnline today, Ms Alwi said since then the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura, instructed her to spy on Mbabazi and team Go-Forward, with promises of reward.

“I was in charge of programmes of candidate Mbabazi and I knew who was who and where he was due to travel and basing on that, I was recruited by IGP to give him hourly reports on Mbabazi,” Ms Alwi said.

She added: “I recruited other groups on the promise that Gen. Kayihura was to pay but up to now he hasn’t paid us and instead when I complain, I am intimidated. I reported the case of ‘threatening violence’ at Kasangati police registered as 38/03/05/016 but nothing has been done up to now.”

According to Ms Alwi, she conscripted a team of 17 people in the Go-Forward team to help her with the espionage task but to date none of them has been paid.

Ms Alwi also said she is the one who first made contacts with Aine before she was facilitated by police to travel to Tanzania to arrange for Aine’s return.

“It is me who alerted them that Aine was in Tanzania and I made contact with the IGP; actually Gen. Salim Saleh’s security team grabbed Aine from Gen. Kayihura at Entebbe Airport,” Ms Alwi says of the saga that saw her colleague Aine, the chief bodyguard of Mr Mbabazi, allegedly flee the country.

At the time Mr Aine, who was wanted by police for orchestrating the beating of NRM supporters in Ntungamo during the campaigns, had a bounty of Shs20 million put on his head by IGP Kayihura.

Asked for a comment on Ms Alwi allegations, Mr Jonathan Baroza, the personal assistant to Gen. Kayihura, said he couldn’t elaborate much about Alwi but rather referred EagleOnline to Eng. Badru Kiggundu, the chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) who, according to Ms Alwi, is a friend to her father.

“I you want to know about her issue, please talk to Eng. Badru Kiggundu as he is the one handling her case,” Mr Baroza saids on phone earlier today.

And when contacted, Eng. Kiggundu,  was cagey about Ms Alwi’s issue but said he would prefer meeting this reporter for a face-to-face meeting.

“I rather if you make an appointment and we meet and see what kind of information you want,” Eng. Kiggundu said on phone.

NTV’s Faridah Nakazibwe: ‘I have finally found the right man’

NTV presenter Faridah Nakazibwe with her 'new catch'.

Forget the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Chairman Al Hajj Moses Kigongo, NTV Mwasuze Mutya presenter Faridah Nakazibwe is in love again!

And unlike before, when she was ashamed of going public about her love affair with the second most powerful person in the NRM, this time she has come out on her latest ‘catch’.

“What a sweet feeling being in love with the right person, Believe Me or Not, lt’s nice to have someone you can celebrate small victories with when you have been losing for such a long time. It’s nice to have someone who can make you forget all the pain you have been through when their love comes at the right time,” Nakazibwe, who is also an anchor for NTV Akawungeezi, posted Thursday on Facebook.

Such sweet statements haven’t come solo; they have been accompanied by photographs of her latest man, having fun at home.
According to the TV Presenter, “to be loved by the right person genuinely and unconditionally is truly one of the best feelings in the world. The older you get, the more you end up cherishing the small things in life.  You end up cherishing having someone worth waking up to.  You end up cherishing comfortable silences with deep talks and slow back rubs.  You end up cherishing making beautiful memories together.  You end up cherishing finally having someone who understands you on a level that no one else has before.”

“You end up appreciating the fact that even when you both disagree on certain things, your love for each other will always bring you both back to each other.  The older you get, the more you end up wanting the things out of life that money can’t buy…. like being in love with the right person.

Finally you deserve someone that makes you a priority and gives the effort to be with you, not excuses. So my wishes for you is before the END of this year, God will turn things around in your life just the way he did it on me, its time for you to step up, Enough is Enough, Whatsoever been standing or holding you from getting Married or Making you not to have a Happy home, Allah the most gracious will deliver you in Amen and Amen.”

Nakazibwe is a mother of two young daughters gotten from a previous relationship with her then workmate, NTV station engineer, Dan Nankunda.

However, the two broke up over four yours ago and the gorgeous lady started dating Kigongo last year but the relationship failed to workout. Indeed, not only was Kigongo twice her age, his daughters, who turn out to be Nakazibwe’s age mates were also totally against her. This, coupled with the public mocking her for dating a 70-year old when she is hardly 30, compelled her to finally call it quits in December last year.

Hima Cement to supply Chinese firm material for Uganda’s biggest mining project

According to government, when completed, the project would include a phosphate fertilizer plant with a production capacity of at least 300,000 tonnes per annum.

The water is under the bridge finally. China’s Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group Company Ltd was preferred ahead of one of Uganda’s richest families, the Madhvanis, for a multi-million dollar mining project. But Hima Cement will also walk to the bank smiling after the cement makers signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the contractor, to supply cement for the Chinese firm which is set to develop the huge phosphates deposits in Eastern Uganda.

“The purpose of this MOU is to establish the relationship between Hima and GZDS. This cooperation of both parties shall cover the project of construction of the phosphate plant and steel mill plant, and any other projects within the Sukulu Industrial Park,” said Daniel Pettersson, the Country CEO of Hima Cement.

The parties will execute a definitive Sales Agreement where Hima Cement will supply the required cement for the project; to the tune of over 40,000 tonnes of cement for the first two years.

The Sukulu Phosphate Project located in Tororo district in Eastern Uganda will manufacture key products such as phosphate fertilizers, steel products, rare earth minerals and generate electricity with the capacity of 12 megawatts.

hima

Commenting on this partnership, the General Manager of Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group Mr. Zheng Xu said that the MOU opens up opportunities for a mutually beneficial engagement with Hima Cement; creating long term benefits for both parties.

The Chinese firm is expected to start production on the $620 million Sukulu Phosphate Project in December 2016 and will employ more than 1,200 Ugandans but also earn Uganda Shs 1.6 trillion in taxes annually.

According to government, when completed, the project would include a phosphate fertilizer plant with a production capacity of at least 300,000 tonnes per annum.

There will be a steel mill with a capacity of not less than 300,000 tonnes per year. A power plant of 12 megawatts will also be set up and a sulphuric acid plant, with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year, will also be established.

“We are proud to be making a significant contribution to an investment of this magnitude that will create many opportunities for the local population,” said Pettersson.

HRW castigates repatriation of Somali refugees from Dadaab camp

Bill Frelick of Human Rights Watch. Photo credit/voanews.com

The repatriation of Somali refugees from the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya fails to meet international standards for voluntary return, a Human Rights Watch report has found.

The organisation says many of those returning to Somalia are motivated by fear of being forced out.

Both Kenya and Somalia say it is time Dadaab was shut down and tens of thousands of refugees have been making the journey back home after years in the camp.

But HRW says Kenya is not giving the refugees a real choice between being repatriated or staying.

It also says the UN’s refugee arm, the UNHCR, is not giving the refugees accurate information about security conditions in Somalia and they face serious risk of persecution or threats to their lives if they return.

Pressuring refugees to return to a place where their lives or freedom could be under threat is a breach of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the organisation says.

Some of the refugees are also choosing to leave because they fear being deported later and forfeiting a $400 (£300) UN cash grant, the organisation says.

“There is no way these returns can be considered voluntary,” said HRW’s Bill Frelick.

Some refugees who have left Dadaab have since found themselves stranded near the border after regional leaders in Jubaland, which borders Kenya and where most of the returnees are going, stopped receiving them, citing inadequate humanitarian support.

The Dadaab camp in Kenya is home to more than 300,000 Somalis.

It was set up in 1991 to house families fleeing conflict and some people have been living there for more than 20 years.

Kenya says attacks on its soil have been planned in the camp.
