Thierry Henry chooses TV role over Arsenal

Thierry Henry

Henry Thierry has turned down the opportunity to join the club’s coaching staff on a permanent basis preferring the punditry job.

The move comes after Manager Arsene Wenger offered Henry a job as Under 18s assistant manager but with the condition that he steps down from his role as a pundit.

Thierry is believed to earn in the region of £4million-a-year at Sky but Wenger was concerned at the obvious issues raised by the club’s all-time record goal scorer criticizing Arsenal players in public only to then subsequently mix with them at their London Colney training base.

Thierry, Arsenal’s leading scorer with 228 goals with two spells at the club criticized Olivier Giroud as a player who cannot lead the team to winning any major trophy at the club.

The 38-year-old rejected the proposal to coach but he is still welcome to attend future sessions as he continues to work on his Pro License coaching badge, it will no longer be on an official basis as part of the setup.

Henry must now find a team to coach in order to complete his Pro License.

His departure has raised question marks about Wenger’s willingness to work with some of his former  and this comes weeks after Mikel Arteta was also offered a role with the youth teams after the midfielder decided to retire at the end of last season but opted to join Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Did Museveni just pull off the best PR stunt ever, stifle Besigye?

President Museveni’s Press Secretary Linda Nabusayi called it a simple 30-minute call, but was it also a great PR stunt …perhaps even one of the best ever!

Typically, Ms Nabusayi shared an unusual picture of her boss sitting on a comfy by the roadside, making a suspected call to embattled South Sudan leader Salva Kiir.

“On the way from Isingiro District yesterday… President Museveni stopped at Kyeirumba Village to make a phone call,” she captioned the picture.

“Curious residents gathered to look at the president, who after 30 minutes on phone, briefly interacted with them. They thanked the government for tarmacking the road linking Uganda to Tanzania through Isingiro.”

The pictures have generated widespread buzz that has even spilled over into Kenya’s cyber space, the busiest online fraternity in the Sub Saharan region, where millions are forecast to participate in trolling Museveni, according to the their notoriety.

Still, social media influencers say this Tuesday sharing of the eye-catching pictures (taken on Monday) was designed to sway the public perception precisely at the point when Uganda’s opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who had just been granted bail, was expected to ‘rule the internet’ for the rest of the day.

Emmie Omongin, the founder and CEO of CampusBee, a university news portal, said that the way Museveni’s press team unleashed the pictures makes it a great publicity stunt.

“It’s all about owning the moment, and this is the moment that President Museveni needs to own,” Mr Omongin said, adding that: “it’s now overwhelmingly the biggest story on social media. Nabusayi should be given a salary increment for a job well done.”

“There’s no news in Dr. Besigye being given bail,” he added. “Over time it has become less exciting because he will be checked in and out again, just like the last time but you will not see many of such hilarious pictures of our President.”

“Even if you know what they’re doing, it doesn’t necessarily mean Besigye’s popularity on social media networks today hasn’t been stifled and disengaged,” Boses Musiime, a techie said. “The train jammed into Besigye supporters, and there’s nothing they can do about it.”

Kudos to Nabusayi and her immediate boss Don Wanyama, a former managing editor for Daily Monitor, who has previously served as the special media assistant to the chairman of the National Resistance Movement.

Analysts see this as an All-Star team assembled by the President and one that has greatly upgraded his media team which has often been looked at as weak especially in countering social media criticism. The opposition had generally exploited this loop hole to advance their programmes on various online platforms,” Mr Omongin noted.

EXCLUSIVE: How the South Sudan war was sparked by a mere Facebook post

South Sudan Ambassador Chol Ajongo alleged that James Gatdet informed the army that Machar had been detained at the President’s palace.

A Facebook post by the Press Secretary of South Sudan Vice President Riek Machar is what caused the violence that has claimed 272 lives mostly soldiers according to South Sudan Embassy in Nairobi.

South Sudan Ambassador Chol Ajongo alleged that James Gatdet informed the army that Machar had been detained at the President’s palace, a message that was immediately acted upon with violence sending cold chills across the Capital of Juba.

“On 8th July, 2016, the SPLA-IO forces Spokesman James Gatdet, Press Secretary of Dr Riek Machar created and spread rumours that their leader Dr Riek Machar Teny was under arrest.”

According to Ajongo, Machar was on the contrary attending a security briefing meeting with President Salva Kiir, Vice President James Wani and other senior government officials at the J1, which is the presidential palace.

The meeting was being held in response to the killing of five of President Kiir’s soldiers on Thursday allegedly by Sudan People Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO).

“SPLA-IO forces proceeded to attack the government forces at J1 at 4.15 and killed many innocent soldiers.”

According to Ajongo, earlier on Friday, one of Machar’s soldiers had forced his way into the palace and after being denied access he shot at a security officer, an attack that could have provoked Machar’s spokesman to allege that he had been detained.

“One of the officers came into the palace and wanted to force his way through to where the meeting was taking place and as a result of that he was denied access to the building. He then shot the officer and the fighting broke out,” he explained.

Kizza Besigye granted bail in treason case

Dr. Kizza Besigye

President Museveni’s leading opponent, Dr. Kizza Besigye who has been on remand at Luzira Prison on treason charges since May 16 is out on bail.

The frequently arrested opposition leader, has for the past two months appeared in court on treason charges after he allegedly took part in a fake presidential swearing-in ceremony which was filmed and circulated online.

But Dr. Besigye was on Tuesday morning granted bail on condition of a non-cash UGX100m bond, asked to restrain from violence for as long as his trial is still ongoing.

High Court Judge Wilson Masalu Musene while reading his judgement on Tuesday morning said bail is representative of notion that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty or if they confess.

Court was impressed by the high caliber of sureties presented. Even state counsel had no objection.

Besigye’s four sureties include FDC party president Gen. Mugisha Muntu, FDC Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi,  Rukungiri Municipality MP Roland Mugume and Rubaga Division Mayor Joyce  Nabbosa Ssebugwawo.

“The applicant (Besigye) has proved on oath that he is 60 years old which is advanced age. There was no rebuttal,” ruled Judge Musane.

“The accused person [Besigye] religiously attended court in previous cases in honor of bail conditions,” he added.

“The liberty of one must never be curtailed wantonly or arbitrarily,” Justice Masalu quoted retired judge James Ogoola.

The judge said Mr Besigye should end his party’s defiance campaign, including demonstrations and weekly prayers at his party’s headquarters.

He also told the opposition leader to live peacefully and not cause any violence.

When he came out of the court building and flashed a victory sign.

He said: “I’m very happy to be out.”

Starting July 26, Besigye expected to report to court once every two weeks.

In 2006, Besigye who was facing treason charges, was released on bail and appeared in court 39 times before he was acquitted.

Dr Besigye, a former doctor to Mr Museveni, has unsuccessfully challenged him four times and was in the space of five years arrested 38 times for political activities as well as being repeatedly beaten and tear gassed.

He was detained frequently during the last election and was held under house arrest for more than a month afterwards. He claimed that he won the poll with 52 per cent of the vote and called for an independent audit.

When the opposition announced a day of defiance over the swearing in of the incumbent, newspaper editors were summoned by the cabinet and told not to give the protest coverage.
