The money, announced by NSSF Managing Director Richard Byarugaba, was raised during the inaugural NSSF Kampala Hash Seven Hills charity run on April 3 this year that was graced by over 600 individuals and officials from the corporate world.

KCCA is in charge of over 79 UPE schools but the first beneficiaries of the money are Nakivubo Settlement School and St. Ponsiano Kyamula Primary School, with the former set to get Shs55 million for renovations, while the latter will get Shs5 million to construct a water harvest point.

“The raised money will help improve on the conditions in these schools like sanitation facilities and infrastructure in the next two years,” Mr Byarugaba said, before lauding those who participated in the run. Contributions were received from among other organisations Stanbic Bank, KCB, Bank of Uganda, Monitor Publications, Standard Chartered Bank, NTV Uganda, Computer Point, Pinnacle Security, INterswitch East Africa, Vision Group, Roko, Rwenzori Bottling Company, Deloitte and Touche, Fireworks Advertising, KCCA and staff of NSSF.

According to Ms Musisi, the schools will not be given money directly but KCCA will use it to put in place the said facilities. She also lauded the NSSF and other partners for heeding the plight of the schools and urged more companies to join the cause.

On their part, the representatives of the beneficiary schools hailed the authority for the assistance. They however, said there was need to improve on the pupil-teacher ratio, which they believe will help in developing the UPE standards.

Previously, NSSF has engaged in a number of corporate social responsible initiatives like the Annual Torch Awards, blood donation drives in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the annual Dental Camp at Mulago Hospital.

Museveni minister Sarah Opendi kicked out of Parliament

Another of President Museveni’s favourite politicians, Primary Healthcare State Minister Sarah Achieng Opendi, has lost her parliamentary seat and been ordered to pay costs of the suit.

On Thursday, the Mbale High Court Judge Lady Justice Margaret Oguli Oumo nullified Opendi’s election as Tororo District Woman Member of Parliament over non-compliance with electoral laws. According to Ayo, a contestant on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket victory was in contravention of the Constitution, Electoral Commission Act Cap 140 and  Parliamentary Elections Act of 2005.

Minister Opendi was declared winner of the February 18th election with 62, 215 against Ayo, her main challenger, who polled 59, 806 votes.

Ms Opendi, an Independent who subscribes to the ruling NRM, becomes the third minister to lose a parliamentary seat. With her nullification, number of MPs kicked out stands at 24.

Last year, in a hotly contested NRM party primary, Ms Opendi lost the flag bearer position to Ms Ayo, who polled 44,441 against 42,718 votes.

Former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi’s grandson has appeared before the Nakuru Chief Magistrate’s court, charged with stealing two mobile phones valued at Ksh19,000 (about UgShs 1,140,000).

According to reports, Collins Toroitich Moi, a son to former first son Jonathan Moi, allegedly stole the phones belonging to his daughter May Chelimo and a friend.

It is that Collins invited Ms Chelimo, a second year university student, for lunch at a hotel Nakuru, and later relieved the two girls their phones so the group could have an uninterrupted conversation.

According to Mr Moi’s lawyer Ochang’ Ajigo, May is a second year university student born to Collins and his former girlfriend, something that could have precipitated the young girl’s anger to take her father to court.

Collins Moi was released on a cash bail of Kshs7000 (approx. Ugshs210.000) or a bond of Kshs20, 000 (approx. Ugshs600.000). He returns to court on August 15.

‘Kiir agrees to foreign troops’ deployment’

SOUTH SUDAN MEDIATOR: Festus Mogae , former Botswana President,

The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), the body tasked to oversee implementation for South Sudan peace agreement, has said that President Salva Kiir has expressed ‘willingness to deployment of foreign (troops)’ in a private meeting contrary to his public statements.

JMEC said in a statement on Wednesday that the South Sudanese leader disclosed his flexibility during a meeting on Tuesday with former Botswana President and JMEC chairman Festus Mogae.

“Among the key points discussed during the productive meeting with President Kiir was his [Kiir] willingness to consider the deployment of a regional protection force in accordance with the recommendations of the IGAD Plus Summit and the Summit of African Union Leaders,” JMEC said in a statement also published on its website on Wednesday.

Mogae, JMEC said, also met the new First Vice President Taban Deng Gai on Monday, hours before being formally nominated as Riek Machar replacement by President Salva Kiir. The President said he acted to fill a vacant created by Machar’s absence following the recommendation of the SPLM IO leaders in Juba.

JMEC said it will resume regular meeting in Juba and ensure that the peace agreement is fully implemented.

“Our only interest is to see a solution that promotes peace and a return to normality as well as security in South Sudan,” said Chairman Mogae.

JMEC said the political deployment in recent weeks that include replacing Machar are ‘complex’ and should be treated with caution.

“The Chairman [Mogae] has decided that, due to the complexity of the issues involved, this is a matter that should be considered and deliberated upon by the JMEC members, both the South Sudanese and our International Partners,” the statement added.

Mogae, JMEC said, is consulting regional leaders and international partners and “has thus met with the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the United Nations and other concerned parties to discuss the political impasse at this sensitive and difficult time for South Sudan.” He met with the Chairperson of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Ethiopian Prime Minister Haile Mariam Desalegn on Tuesday “to discuss the latest developments and the way forward for South Sudan.”

JMEC said Mogae will continue with the consulting and will address the United Nations Security Council in August about the South Sudanese peace implementation.

President Kiir has previously vowed not to allow ‘a single foreign soldier’ in South Sudan following IGAD and African Union (AU) proposal to send regional forces to support UN peacekeepers in the country. He repeated this stance on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony for the first deputy president Taban Deng Gai.

Bitature daughter excels in US1m competition

INNOVATION: Natalie Bitature and her colleagues from the Hultz International Business School display the Musana Cart.

Despite recent media reports indicating that Ugandan tycoon Patrick Bitature is in need of government intervention to assuage his financial woes, he does not need any assistance when it comes to investing wisely in his children and his daughter Natalie Bitature is testimony to that.

The twenty-six year old Natalie and two colleagues, Manon Lavaud, 24, and Keisuke ‘Kei’ Kubota, 29, all students of the prestigious Hultz International Business School in San Francisco, US, have come up with an innovation, the Musana Cart, in the process entering the annual Hultz prize competition, which has a US 1 million dollar top prize.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS: A diagram giving specifics on the Musana Cart
HERE IS HOW IT WORKS: A photo illustration giving specifics on how the Musana Cart works

With Uganda as their study case and initial target market the trio devised means through which Ugandan vendors can improve production and efficiency, and Musana Cart is designed to help and make the workload of vendors easier to produce quality induced goods and services, particularly the average ‘rolex’ guy.

The two-wheeled cart will have a solar panel roof, permitting the mobile vendors to cook and refrigerate their products as they go about their work.

Initially entering the competition on a whim, the trio did not expect the Musana Cart to be among the innovations competing for the top prize money let alone being a favorite with the judges and most likely to win. Musana means ‘Sun’ in luganda, Uganda’s most widely-used dialect and was probably the name chosen for the cart, because it uses solar energy.

The Hultz prize was engineered by the alumnus of the San Francisco college to drive students to think out of the box by coming up with ideas that impact on society, in the process changing the way many entrepreneurs tackle business.

Uganda Rugby Cranes raid Nairobi to restore pride

SATURDAY, RFUEA grounds Nairobi

Kenya vs Uganda – 4pm

The Uganda men’s national rugby team travels to neighbouring Kenya to play their CAR 1A tie which also doubles as the Elgon Cup return leg clash hoping to build on their surprise win over Zimbabwe.

The mouthwatering game is at the RFUEA grounds on Saturday 30 July, beginning 4pm. Kenya lost to Uganda Rugby Cranes on 45-47 aggregate last year.

Uganda won Africa Cup Division 1B contest last year to earn promotion but this month toiled to retain their Africa Cup 1A status for at least one more season with a memorable 34-27 victory in Zimbabwe last weekend which catapulted them from 50th to 42nd position in the new World Rugby rankings that enables Uganda to play in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers.

Rugby Cranes vice-captain Michael Wokorach also says after the team’s target was always to avoid relegation, John Duncan’s side will work even harder to overturn a 65-16 walloping by Kenya last month.

Wokorach also told EagleOnline: “This is a big chance for us (Cranes) to seek redemption and make Ugandans proud again. The win against Zimbabwe was a moral boaster and we are using more energy to win in Nairobi.”

Wokorach was supplemented by Captain Brian Odongo in rallying his troops not to rest on their laurels but to get over the finishing line.

According to head coach John Duncan says a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since Kenya beat Uganda at Legends rugby club and the Cranes are more prepared for the return leg.

Uganda will bank on the experience of Odong, Wokorach, Kevin Makmot and Byron Oketayot to match the highly tactical Kenyans whose star players are centre David Ambunya, fullback Vincent Mose, fly-half Nato Simiyu and back-row Mike Okombe.

‎Rugby Cranes squad that will be in Kenya: Masendi Robert, Odongo Brian, Kitooke Elijah, Kimbowa Collin, Uhuru Odong Charles, Wandicho John Willam, Asaba Brian, Oketayot Byron, Mpande Arthur Joshua, Ogena Puis, Kalyango Thomas Oscar, Okorach Michael, Lubanga Chris, Magomu Ivan Arthur, Watum Cyrus, Odongo Marvin Harold, Mugerwa Asuman, Kiwalabye Davis Kayongo, Odong James, Wokorach Phillip, Ssebuliba Lawrence, Jawdong Aredo Joseph and Kasita Eric.

Police ‘hiding’ senior cop indicted for murder – deceased’s family

COMMITTED TO HIGH COURT: SP Aaron Baguma is accused of murder.

The former Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) Superintendent of Police (SP) Aaron Baguma, who is indicted over the murder of Donah Betty Katushabe over a Shs9m debt, is being shielded by the State, the deceased’s family has said.

According a local daily the family, in a letter dated July 18, confirmed asking Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for assistance in tracking down Mr Baguma who was early this week relieved of his duties at CPS by Police chief Gen Kale Kayihura.

‘Upon follow-up we got information that several orders have been issued to have the DPC of Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala Aaron Baguma produced in court for trial but police never comply with the above directives. We trust that proper prosecution shall be conducted for justice to be done as we are witnesses’, the newspaper reported today.

The death of Katushabe, who was killed at the Pine car depot in Nakasero in the Central Business District, reportedly exposed a racket of corrupt and dangerous cops at CPS that was keen to ‘kill’ the widely-publicised case.

And mid this year the DPP spokesperson Jane Okuo Kajuga said Baguma had been indicted for murder because he allegedly abetted the murder of Katushabe.

Mr Baguma has since December been sought by the DPP, who on December 18 last year wrote to the Resident State Attorney at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, directing that Mr Baguma be jointly charged with Muhammed Ssebuwufu, the proprietor of Pine car depot, who has already been charged with Katushabe’s murder.

But contacted for comment today, police spokesperson Fred Enanga refuted the family claims, saying that the institution had acted objectively and transparently in the matter. He noted that there had been engagements between the various parties and, citing the possibility of witch hunt, Mr Enanga said that Baguma had instead ‘protected’ the investigation from distortions, a development that was brought to the attention of the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura.

Further, Mr Enanga said: “the DPP is reviewing that file and it is not yet returned; if it has it will be brought to the attention of management.”

Previously, the Prosecution had averred that Mr Baguma went to the scene of murder, a few metres away from his duty station at Central Police Station, found the deceased being beaten by the accused persons and despite her pleadings to him to rescue her from her tormentors, he simply asked her to pay Ssebuwufu’s debt. It is stated that Baguma left the place and Katushabe was killed shortly after.

Under the Penal Code section 188 and 189 any person found guilty of murder is liable to death sentence upon conviction.

Onyango ‘safe hands’ helps Sundowns beat Zamalek to reach Champs League semis

Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango on Wednesday kept a clean sheet as Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa continued their impressive run in the African Champions League with a 1-0 win over Zamalek which put them into the semi-finals.

An own-goal from Zamalek’s Ali Gabr in the 79th minute secured Sundowns’ qualification to complete a remarkable turnaround for the South Africans in the Champions League.

Onyango who is the Uganda assistant captain was the reason his side picked a point against the Egyptians. He stood tall between the posts to denying Youssef, Abdelkhalik, Khaled, Shikabala and Morsy. On several occasions, he had a few shaky moments but did well to keep his side in the game. He was on several occasions called into action when his back-line exposed him.

Onyango believes Downs, who set an Absa Premiership record 71 points winning the title this season, have the muscle to reach the finals of Africa’s most prestigious club competition.

“It’s a new challenge for us because most of the guys have never been into the group stages,” Onyango says.

“We need to give our best because the club wants a star. It’s very difficult, but we need to fight as a team. We need to win our home games, and also get one or two results away.

Sundowns had been eliminated in the final qualifying round for the Champions League last April by AS Vita Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Demoted to the second-tier Confederation Cup, Sundowns were beaten by Medeama of Ghana in a play-off to suffer further African disappointment.

But on the eve of the June draw for the Champions League groups, the organisers kicked out Vita Club for using a banned player and Sundowns were reinstated.

The victory over Zamalek puts Sundowns top of Group B on nine points – six ahead of Zamalek in second.

Onyango will also be the main man on September 3 during must-win Cranes versus Comoros Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole and Uganda can progress as either Group D winners or as best runners-up.

In the other group, qualification will go down to the final day of matches, after bottom side Al Ahly finally recorded a win – beating leaders Wydad Casablanca 1-0.

Zambia’s Zesco are tied with Wydad after being held 1-1 by Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast, who have the same number of points as Ahly.

Pay civil servants well or they steal – Otafiire

Internal Affairs Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire (R) consults with cabinet former colleague Hajji Abdul Nadduli, while at the cabinet retreat in Kyankwanzi. He is set to bounce back with a resounding victory.

KYAKWANZI Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has told fellow cabinet colleagues and Permanent Secretaries attending a retreat at the National Leadership Institution (NALI) in Kyankwanzi to consider paying civil servants well or else they steal government funds.

According to a source, Gen. Otafiire, who was reacting to a submission by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, said that whereas politicians are paid well, civil servants, the people who monitor most government projects, aren’t well paid. The outspoken minister further said the low pay is a temptation for the civil servants to swindle the funds.

“Civil servants should be paid well and whoever is paid well should work. Look for a way of paying them well because you (politicians) go to the same super markets,” a source at Kyakwanzi, quoting Gen Otaffiire, told EagleOnline.

The country’s top cream is attending a one-week retreat, where among other issues, they are deliberating on how the country can achieve a middle income status by 2020.
