Our fathers are in the evening of their regime, it is good to be humble – Otafiire’s son to Muhoozi

Gen Muhoozi, Otafiire

Ernesto Otafiire, the son to Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has told Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi to remain humble stating that their fathers are in the evening of their regime.

“Our fathers are in the evening of their regime, it’s high time you became humble. These Generals and people you taunt will owe us nothing when our fathers are no more .When chasing us into exile, make sure you can run as fast as some of us. I am sure you know what exile means,” Otafiire’s son said.

“This country doesn’t belong to any of (us), it was here before we came, it has been here and it will be here long after we are gone . Be humble and calm down,” he added.

This comes after Muhoozi said Otafiire could get some lessons from veteran opposition figure Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye.

“Finally my elder Kizza Besigye and I agree on something. As I said before, I have no problem with Kizza Besigye. He is my elder and I look forward to discussing with him on many issues, Maybe, he can teach Otafiire some lessons?” Gen Muhoozi said after agreeing with Besigye that ‘NRM is probably the most reactionary organisation in the country.’

Gen. Kahinda Otafiire and other several leaders have endorsed President Yoweri Museveni for the 2026 presidential elections which could disintegrate Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions.

Over 12,000 set to graduate at Kyambogo University

Kyambogo University is graduating over 12,000 students this week in a three-day graduation ceremony.

Professor Eli Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, while addressing the media at Kyambogo University in Kampala on Monday, revealed that the University Senate agreed that the University hold the 18th graduation from 7th to 9th December starting from 8am-1pm.

He said plans have been underway, the University Council has blessed the occasion, and in preparation of the graduation ceremony, the University first installed the Chancellor.

Professor John Yakobo Okedi was installed on 9th November after being appointed by the President of the Republic of Uganda Yoweri Museveni, replacing the former Chancellor Professor John Ssebuwufu.

He noted that this is the first time the University is graduating the highest and the largest number of students since it was established. Of those set to graduate, 6,239 are male and 5,841 are female.

“We are glad that we are having the big harvest of students and to contribute to the human resource capital of this country. This ceremony will be physical and we urge all students wherever they are to come and attend the graduation ceremony,” Professor Eli Katunguka added.

The Vice Chancellor during the press Conference also noted that students graduating from the Learning Centers of Soroti and Bushenyi will graduate from the Main campus.

According to the press release, the first day, that is 7th, will have students from the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation and those from the School of Management and Entrepreneurship.

The second day (8th Thursday) will have students from faculties of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Agriculture, School of Vocational Studies and School of Arts and Industrial Design.

The last day (9th Friday) shall have School of Education, School of Computing and Information Science and School of Built Environment, and lastly Faculties of Science and Engineering.

He noticed that there is a concern that some students are not on the graduation list. He said this is because the students have retakes or have not paid the university dues. He also revealed that other times, some results come late but this time the Senate decided not to have an addendum.

“if there are students who have everything needed for graduation but are not on the list, after graduation, they will be required to go through the right procedures and they will be given their transcripts,” he assured.

According to Professor Katunguka, the University will be closed for other university activities for all these three days.

“During the three days of the 18th Graduation ceremony, starting from Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th and Friday 9th December 2022, there will not be any lectures taking place at Kyambogo,” Prof Katunguka said.

Wilson Okaka while showing his happiness on Twitter, he congratulated all the Kyambogo University graduands on marking their latest career development excellence in 2022. “Give thanks and glory to God who fills your life with all kinds of good things so that you stay brilliant, strong, and young as you fly higher and higher like an eagle. Be always blessed,” he posted.

Each graduand is only allowed to invite two guests to accompany them. No more people shall be accepted.

Professor Eli Katunguka revealed that the University has invited The First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports. However, she informed them that she will be having other engagements. Professor said that Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo, the State Minister for Higher Education will represent Janet Museveni.

Uganda commemorates International Volunteers Day

Uganda today December 5, 2022 has joined the rest of the world to commemorate International Volunteers Day (IVD) under the theme “Solidarity through Volunteering”.

The United Nations (UN) set aside this day in 1985 to recognize and promote tireless work not just of UN Volunteers but all volunteers around the globe.

Over a billion people volunteer their time, skills, and experience to help improve their communities. From providing practical support to vulnerable children and adults to advising on sophisticated technical and legal issues, volunteers are present at all levels of society. Each one brings a specific set of skills to their tasks.

The celebration of the day provides an opportunity for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, share their values and promote their work among countries, non-governmental organizations, UN Agencies, and governmental authorities as well as the private sector.

The Minister of state for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Persis Namuganza, said that Uganda is celebrating, honoring and galvanizing the efforts of commitment and resilience that the volunteers exhibit to promote development work, including that of organizations like Habitat for Humanity in Uganda and Uganda as a country.

“We know that for 40 years now in Uganda, Habitat for Humanity in Uganda has been partnering with government, districts and families to improve the living conditions of Ugandans through helping them access a decent shelter,” Namuganza said.

The pandemic and recent conflicts have reversed years of progress made in the fight against housing poverty, resulting in the emergence of newly poor people who would have exited poverty in the absence of the pandemic but remain poor, and those who would have fallen into poverty on account of the pandemic, rising inequalities especially in the housing sector implore that there is need to work effectively to find common solutions especially for the vulnerable in society.

“As government, the provision of decent shelter, clean water and sanitation facilities are part of the greatest commitment we have and this situation is improving year after year; a big thank you. To the work of partners like Habitat for Humanity Uganda,” she added.

She added that Uganda does not have national celebrations because of the health situation in the country.

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is committed to ensure that Ugandans not only have decent homes and the related facilities but also have a decent home without security of their land.

The minister noted that although great work is being done, they also appreciate that there are challenges encountered in supporting every family to access a decent home as the Ugandan population continues to grow because of better health and security among other factors.

“Ladies and gentlemen, concerted effort is therefore required by all of us to join hands and make decent homes a reality for the vulnerable families within our communities. This is the effort I like to commend the volunteers for and continue to challenge us to embrace volunteering to impact our communities,” the minister said.

The minister also challenged the higher institutions of learning, the staff within the corporate world and other friends; the journalists to find a few hours of their time to volunteer so as to bring impact on vulnerable families in the communities.

“The Government would like to use this occasion to urge all Ugandans to embrace voluntarism in order to help fellow Ugandans to have a decent roof over their heads. Doing this will create for us the Uganda we deserve,” she urged.

I agree with Besigye, he should teach Otafiire a lesson – Muhoozi

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba

Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi has said he has no problem with veteran opposition figure Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and that he is open to holding a discussion on many issues with him.

Muhoozi was replying to Besigye who agreed with him that NRM is “probably the most reactionary organisation in the country!”. Besigye added that “What he’s [Muhoozi] yet to find out, is that NRM is an outfit for organised crime and that it is M7, his father.”

“Finally my elder Kizza Besigye and I agree on something. As I said before, I have no problem with Kizza Besigye. He is my elder and I look forward to discussing with him on many issues,” Gen Muhoozi said.

“Maybe, he can teach Otafiire some lessons?” he added.

It all started with Muhoozi saying the NRM did not represent the people of Uganda and that he does not believe in the ruling party led by his father. “In Marxist terms it is probably the most reactionary organisation in the country,” he stated on Friday.

This comes after Gen. Kahinda Otafiire and other several leaders endorsed President Yoweri Museveni for the 2026 presidential elections.

Muhoozi warned that sections of NRM which are ‘signing declarations’ should prepare for tough times ahead. He believes there is a movement within NRM to disintegrate his presidential ambitions.

“Those people signing declarations against us in the NRM. We will teach you what Uganda means. This country belongs to Almighty God and the people of Uganda. Let us see who is stronger you or us?” Muhoozi said.

Muhoozi, who was relieved of duties as Commander of Land Forces in October following controversial tweets about Kenya, but then promoted to the rank of General, earlier today said he would soon make an “important announcement in the next few weeks” in his personal capacity and as a leader of this generation.

Stanbic PMI: New orders increase for fourth consecutive month

Stanbic Bank

Conditions in Uganda’s private sector continue to improve as the latest data for the monthly Stanbic Purchasing Managers Index (Stanbic Bank PMI) showed output, new orders and employment all increased over the month.

The headline PMI rose to 50.9 in November from 50.0 in October, indicating an improvement in business conditions for the third time in the past four months, following a stable position in the previous month, however, the latest figure was still below the series average.

The monthly survey is compiled by S&P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in a panel of around 400 private sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. The sectors covered by the survey include agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction, wholesale, retail and services. Data were first collected in June 2016.

Sector data showed output rising in the industry and services categories, but falling in agriculture, construction and wholesale & retail.

Mulalo Madula, Economist at Standard Bank said, “Uganda’s November PMI is still below the series average but shows signs of improving business activity for the fourth month in a row. The industrial and service categories of the economy reported higher output, while agricultural, construction, wholesale and retail output declined. Production grew strongly as new orders continued to improve, the new international business returned to growth and the six-month contraction ended.”

The PMI is a weighted average of the following five indices: New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Employment (20%), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15%) and Stocks of Purchases (10%). For the PMI calculation, the Suppliers’ Delivery Times series is inverted so that it moves in a comparable direction to the other series.

According to the November findings, companies remain optimistic that business activity will continue to rise over the year ahead.

Madula said, “The improvement in demand has been a recurring topic and reportedly a major driver of growth, employment, and purchasing activity. Businesses continue to evaluate the future business situation positively. This is due to the expected growth of new orders and moderation of prices. However, the growing risk of a global recession could cloud the outlook for economic growth.”

Anecdotal evidence suggested that advertising had helped firms to secure greater new business during the month.

Companies in Uganda remained optimistic that output will increase over the coming year, with 73% of respondents expressing a positive outlook in November. Hopes for expanded new orders were central to optimism, with some firms also predicting a moderation of price pressures.

Although new orders continued to expand, there remained little pressure on capacity and firms were able to deplete backlogs of work again. Companies kept on top of workloads in part due to a second consecutive increase in employment.

As well as taking on additional staff, companies also signaled a renewed increase in their purchasing activity during November, ending a two-month period of decline. Inventories were also up for the first time in three months.

Some respondents indicated that sales had come in lower than expected, meaning that fewer inputs were required to support output and more were kept in reserve.

Suppliers’ delivery times lengthened in November, following an improvement in vendor performance in October. Material scarcity was central to delivery delays, with poultry feed mentioned in particular as being in short supply.

Higher input costs were recorded amid reports of rising charges for electricity and water, alongside increased purchase and staff costs. There were some reports, however, of fuel prices starting to come down.

As has been the case in each of the past 16 months, purchase costs increased in the Ugandan private sector in November. Panelists reported a range of items as having risen in price, including food products, paper and packaging. Purchase costs continued to increase across each of the five broad sectors covered by the survey.

In response to the rise in input costs, companies increased their own selling prices for the fifteenth month running. Hopes of the continued growth of new orders and moderation of prices contributed to ongoing optimism regarding the year-ahead outlook for business activity.

I will make an important announcement soon, Muhoozi says as he moves towards presidential bid

Gen. Muhoozi

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said he will make an important announcement in a few weeks in his personal capacity and as a leader of this generation.

Even though he did not disclose the exact date, the First Son said he won’t announce it on twitter, but by other means.

“In a few weeks, I will make an important announcement. Not on Twitter but by other means. I will make it in my personal capacity and as the leader of our generation,” he tweeted.

Muhoozi first signaled his desire to go public about his presidential ambitions when he turned his 48th birthday celebrations this year into a national event.

Gen Muhoozi who was relieved of duties as Commander of Land Forces in October after controversial tweets about capturing Kenya’s capital Nairobi in two weeks, later announced that he wants to be president of Uganda to honour his mother Janet Kataaha Museveni.

“The only way I can repay my great mother is by being President of Uganda! And I shall definitely do it!!” he tweeted on October 27.

Across the country and online, multiple ‘Team MK’ or ‘MK 2026’ support groups have popped up to support his future presidential run.

Uganda will go to the polls in 2026 to elect a new president.

Bank of Uganda builds maternity ward in memory of former Governor Mutebile

Bank of Uganda (BoU) has built and equipped a new maternity block at Rubaya Health Center IV in Kabale District named after deceased former Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, who presided over the function on Friday, said Prof Tumusiime-Mutebile embodied the spirit of giving.

“You may wonder why the central Bank of Uganda invests in maternal, newborn and child healthcare. You may wonder why the BoU had revamped and revitalised numerous health centres across the country. You may wonder what this all has to do with the late governor,” he said.

“The answer is simple and self-evident. It is because the BoU family believes deeply in the African concept of Obuntu or Ubuntu. And the Late Prof. Tumusiime-Mutebile embodied, exemplified, and lavished that sense of Ubuntu on everyone who interacted fruitfully with him, especially the less fortunate among us,” he explained.

“It is, therefore, befitting that the new maternity block is named in his memory. Our late governor was a devoted humanitarian, and this maternity block symbolizes his enduring legacy of service to humanity,” he said.

The Deputy Governor together with area leaders also planted a memorial tree and said the bank shall promote the planting of various other trees for flowers, shade, fruit, and hedge at the Rubaya health facility.

He also challenged the Kabale district leadership to extend financial literacy and sensitize all the people about producing a surplus beyond their household needs, which they can sell in the physical and electronic markets.

From the proceeds of the BoU@50 Charity Walk, the Bank has to date funded renovations at nine Health Centres namely, Budondo Health Centre IV, Kyanamukaka Health Centre IV, Rutete Health Centre III, Bwizibwera Health Centre IV, Ayivuni Health Centre III.

“Next, in the third phase, we will revamp and retool Kigorobya Health Centre IV in Hoima District, Rwoburunga Health Centre III in Mitooma District, and Magoro Health Centre III in Katakwi District,” the Deputy Governor said.

Dr. Ego said BoU will keep promoting maternal, newborn, and child health care under corporate social responsibility to sustain its contribution to the population’s productivity for increased competitiveness and better quality of life for all.

EU provides Shs4.6 billion grant to skill refugees and host communities

The European Union under the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa has awarded three organisations grants totaling Shs 4.6 billion to skill refugees and host communities in West Nile and Kiryadongo. Recipients include; Edukans Education Services, Windle International and Welthungerhilfe.

The funds provided through the Support to Skilling Uganda (SSU) project implemented by Enabel and the Ministry of Education will facilitate the training of 1210 refugees and their Ugandan hosts in Yumbe, Arua, Madi Okollo, Terego, Adjumani and Kiryadongo.

Enabel Country Representative Tom Vanneste says the project started in 2017 and has to date trained more than 5000 refugees and host community youth, women and girls.  “Tracer studies indicate that nearly 7 out of 10 trained people either get employed or start their own enterprises within six months after graduation,” Vanneste says. He attributed the high employability rate to deliberate efforts taken to align training with labour market needs.

“The EU is proud to be one of the key partners of Uganda in supporting the national refugee response. Through this project, we will support increased access to quality skills development through vocational training and the provision of entrepreneurial skills. This action contributes to the development of sustainable livelihoods through the creation of income-generating activities for both refugee and host communities,” said Nadia Cannata, Head of the Section for Sustainable Development, Delegation of the European Union to Uganda.

The Support to Skilling Uganda project aims to increase access to quality skills development through vocational & entrepreneurship skills training, provision of startup kits and post-training business development support.

The grants award ceremony at National Teachers’ College Muni in Arua City also featured a photo exhibition to commemorate the work of the EU and the Government of Uganda in support of the national refugee response. The exhibition presented photography of EU interventions in refugee hosting districts, which highlight the EU’s contribution towards building resilience and transforming lives. The photo exhibition was free and open to the public all day on 1 December.

Refugee-response initiatives funded by the European Union address a wide spectrum of issues. These include humanitarian aid and civil protection; water, hygiene and sanitation; cash and vouchers transfer; strengthening the capacity of local governments to contribute to improved service delivery; supporting income-generating activities for refugees and host communities; increased environmental and natural resources protection by restoring and conserving degraded natural resources; and accelerating access to justice and protection for vulnerable groups.

MPs Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana

The International Crimes Division of the High Court has set 20th February 2023 as the date for the hearing of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and his Makindye West legislator Allan Ssewanyana’s bail application.

The legislators through their lawyers led by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Samuel Muyizzi petitioned court challenging their continuous detention in Kitalya min maximum prison.

They contended that they have been on remand for over six months without trial and therefore they should be released on bail. Citing medical complications, the two said that they were mishandled before and during arrest and they want to access thorough treatment.

The two MPs and four other suspects who have been on remand for over six months are accused of terrorism contrary to sections 7 (1) and (2) (d) and (d) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2002 in count one, aiding and abetting terrorism contrary to section 8 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2002 in count two, murder contrary to sections 188 and 189 of the Penal code Act in Counts three, four, five and attempted murder contrary to section 204 (a) of the Penal code Act.

Prosecution states that the two legislators together with other suspects -some on remand and others still at large on August 2, 2021 allegedly killed Joseph Bwanika, a resident of Kisekka Village in Kisekka Sub County in Lwengo District.

It is further alleged that on August 23 at Ssettaala Village in Masaka City, the MPs and their co-accused persons killed Francis Mugerwa Kiiza aka Nswa, Sulaiman Kakooza and Tadeo Kiyimba .

The MPs are also accused of attempting to kill Ronald Ssebyoto, a resident of the same area. They are also accused of financing the killings in the Greater Masaka region.
