Prof. Owgang gets Shs5b and Investment license for Covidex manufacturing plant

Professor Peter Owgang has been granted Shs5 billon and Investment license to set up Covidex manufacturing plant in Soroti.

Prof Ogwang is the brain behind the innovation of Covidex, a herbal remedy which helps in the treatment of #Covid-19.

Recently, National Drug Authority (NDA) cleared the herbal drug following the establishment that it’s components play a vital role in the treatment of #Covid-19.

The certificate has been granted by Uganda Investment Authority (UIA).
The processing of a certificate which normally takes two days, has been generated in one hour and handed over to Prof Ogwang and Jena Uganda Limited to go on with the activities set up the factory.
According to State Minister for Investment Everyn Anite, Prof Ogwang has been given Shs5 billion and five acres of land in Soroti Industrial Park.
“Prof Ogwang will benefit from other government incentives like a 10 years tax holiday which has always been given to other investors,” Anite said
Soroti Industrial Park was chosen because most of the raw materials like Lemon grass are mostly grown in Teso subregion.
“The setting of Jena manufacturing plant in Soroti, will help the country to save over Shs4 billion that has been used to import drugs,”Prof. Ogwang said
Currently, Prof Ogwang and his company employee 200 people at the factory and 300 collecting raw materials. Upon complication, the factory is expected to employ over 1200 people.

Moroto prison break ringleader arrested by joint security team

The ring leader in the September 2020 Moroto prison break in which guns and rounds of ammunition were looted has been netted in Kotido district.

Security forces have for the last 10 months been on a hunt for the 40-year-old Lokolikau Lochu and others. Over 80 escapees have been rearrested.

Lochu was found with a gun with 14 rounds of ammunition. Police say the gun belongs to Uganda Prisons Services.

In September last year , a total of 219 inmates overpowered prison warders at Singila prison in Moroto District, broke into the armory and went away with a total of 15 guns and 480 bullets. Efforts to pursue them yielded no results then but the forces did not give up.

In the 10 months hunt, the security forces have put out of action (killed) several members of the group while others have been arrested.

With Lochu’ arrest and recovery of the gun he was carrying, the forces continue to hunt for the 13 more stolen SMG guns still missing.

“As we continue with disarmament operations, today morning 20th/7/21 at around 8:30 am, the joint forces recovered smg.no.UG.POL.56-5968030-40693 with 14 rounds from Kotido district belonging to prisons service after arresting one of the escapees who broke into the Moroto prisons armoury last year by names Lokolikau Lochu aged 40 years,” said one of the police officers who carried out the operation in which Lochu was arrested.

Police says Lochu has been using the same gun to carry out cattle raids in the neighbouring districts.

Whoever touches our country should get burnt – Gen Mohoozi

The Commander of UPDF Land Forces Lt Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi has visited the detach in Zombo district that was last Friday attacked by rebels from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Land Forces commander commended the soldiers for successfully repulsing the rebels, urging them to continue defending their nation.

Gen Kainerugaba said he had visited to personally appreciate the soldiers, listen to their issues, and generally understand the environment in which his soldiers operate.

Emphasizing the soldiers’ mandate, Gen Kainerugaba said: “We are the fire of our country and therefore, whoever touches our country should get burnt.”

He was speaking after touring the encampment and part of the Uganda-DRC border in Zombo.
The UPDF chief was furnished with first-hand details of attack.

This past Friday UPDF troops fended off Lendu militias of Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) that targeted their base in Zombo.
According to the UPDF spokesperson Brig Flavia Byekwaso, the Force’s unit at Zeu in Zombo repelled 20 men disguising as forest workers.

They captured two, put four out of action and recovered one gun and bows/arrows, but sadly lost a soldier.
CODECO is an armed group that has been carrying out attacks in the DRC province of Ituri.

The militia is drawn from the Lendu ethnic group, a predominantly farming community that has historically clashed with the Hema, a group of traders and herders.
Since March 2020, CODECO members are said to have killed over 300 people in Ituri province.

Gov’t declares Tuesday a public holiday

Government has declared tomorrow Tuesday 20th July, 2021 a public holiday to mark Eid al-Adha.
“The Honourable Minister of Public Service informs the general public that Tuesday 20th July 2021 is Eid al-Adha and will be observed as Public Holiday throughout Uganda,” the Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Public Service Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire wrote in an official announcement.
She added that the day will be observed from home due to the prevailing Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings to prevent 2nd wave infections.
Eid al-Adha, Arabic for Festival of the Sacrifice, is the latter of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam.
During the festival of Eid al-Adha, Muslims acknowledge the devotion of Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son, Ismail, under the order of Allah.

Concede defeat Museveni urges Kiwanda and team

In his capacity as chairman of the National Resistance Movement, President Yoweri Museveni has asked whoever lost in the Friday polls of the NRM Caucus executives and the EALA by-elections not think only about themselves but the party.

Museveni who was at Kololo during the elections, said “what matters is not the positions of individuals but the agenda of the party as a whole.”

After announcement of the results, Museveni went to his Twitter handle and tweeted, “I congratulate all those that participated in the NRM Caucus executive elections and the EALA by-elections irrespective of the results. What matters is not the positions of individuals but the agenda of the party as a whole. Democracy won. Congratulations.”

The polls were won Herbert Kinobere (Vice chairman), Lillian Aber as General Secretary, Alex Brandon Kintu as Publicity Secretary and Faith Nakut the Secretary for finance.

The stiffest competition however, was between James Kakooza and Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi both former state ministers of health and tourism respectively. The duo contested for EALA slot that fell vacant following the untimely demise of Hon Matia Kasamba.

Being a member of the Central Executive Committee of NRM, Kiwanda saw himself as a winner even before the polls. But this hit a snag when voters snubbed him in favour of Kakooza.

In an election believed to have been very transparent, Kakooza polled 93 votes and Kiwanda scored 85 votes placing him behind the former.

Minister Kasolo praises Letshego for supporting gov’t by giving jobs to locals and offering better services

Finance State Minister in charge of Microfinance Haruna Kasolo has praised Letshego Uganda for employing locals and offering both treatment and donations during the #Covid-19 pandemic.
Minister Kasolo made the remarks at Letshego head office on Wampewo Avenue in Kololo while paying a courtesy call to Letshego. Kasolo said amidst the pandemic, Letshego had shown true colours of a a true friend to Uganda.
“Government is supposed to employ Ugandans and you’re our people. You’re our partners, we must protect you, work with you and support you,” Kasolo said.
He also applauded Letshego for their participation in the fight against #Covid-19 through donations and treating patients.
“Many organizations have not done this, treating a #Covid-19 patient requires a lot of money so bravo Letshego,” he added. Minister Kasolo is on a tour of registered microfinance leading institutions in the country.
Present was the Letshego Uganda Chief Executive Officer Germany Giles Aijukwe and the senior management team and members from the Finance Ministry.
“Our doors remain open to assist our esteemed customers countrywide across our 44 branches,” remarked Giles Aijukwe.
Letshego is a microfinance company that offers SME loans, mortgage loans, and education loans, among other forms of lending. The company also offers savings accounts.

Kakooza trounces Kiwanda and 4 others to scoop EALA seat.

The former Kabula Member of Parliament, James Kakooza has defeated the NRM Vice Chairman for Buganda, Godfrey Kiwanda to carry the NRM flag in filling the EALA slot left by the late Mathias Kasamba.

In a tight Friday race at Kololo Independence Grounds, Kakooza polled 93 votes and Kiwanda the NRM Central Executive Committee Member for Central Region and former Minister of State for Tourism, came second with 85 votes. Abbas Mutumba came third with 54 votes.

In his speech, Kakooza thanked the parliamentary caucus MPs for considering the need to have a wider representation on various positions available for party members.

Kakooza is a former State Minister for Health in Uganda a position he held since 2009.

He was also the Member of Parliament representing Kabula County, Lyantonde District, in the Ugandan Parliament a position he has held since 2001 until May this year following his last year loss to rival Enos Asiimwe Kinywamachunde in the party primaries who garnered 15,021 votes against Kakooza’s 3,876.

His plan

Kakooza has for long been planning to ensure that the cap for term limits for members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is removed.

The Assembly is the Legislative Organ of the East African Community with a membership of 45 elected members from five states. These include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda. However, representation to the assembly is limited to two five-year terms.

But since 2016, Kakooza has been arguing that the term limits have consistently crippled the ability of EALA members to serve their countries because the ten year mandate is not enough for them to achieve effective representation.

On June 25, 2016 during the EAC integration outreach workshop for Lyantonde, Rakai and Sembabule districts held at Lyantonde District headquarters, Kakooza said that because of the limits, EALA was losing experienced members without putting to use their expertise and seniority on the complex issues of the East African Community.

He said then that if he could one day make it to EALA, he would push for the removal of term limit of its members.

Kampala Parents shines in PLE 2020 results as schools praises online learning

Kampala Parents School has once again emerged among top 2020 PLE performing schools in the country as Uganda National Examination Board released the exams.

The School in the released 2020 P.L.E results, has announced 129 pupils in the first grade o out of 186 with majority of the pupils in the glorious range of 4-6 aggregates.

While celebrating the results, the school Principal Kato urged government to scale up online learning to ensure that children continue learning during the current #Covid-19 pandemic or other challenges that could emerge in future. Most public schools in Uganda lack internet facilities and a s such many pupils cannot access learning online.

Ms Kato further says that it’s important for children in both private and public schools to continue learning and that government should support efforts to put the necessary facilities in place
Kato was speaking after receiving the 2020 PLE results in which 129 out of 186 candidates who sat from the centre passed in grade one with grades ranging between 4 to 6.
Kampala Parents School was among a few schools that ensured continuous learning through use of online platforms. Kato says that this helped a lot.

“The situation was not so normal but we had to give our best, online lessons helped a lot, because if we had not had them, we could have not had such results. I urge the government to increase efforts and promote E-learning because we do not know when the pandemic will end.  E-learning is very helpful and health because both teachers and the pupils stay in their respect homes”

 

The principal also welcomed the performance of the pupils saying it is remarkable given the tough conditions pupils studied in and sat for the examinations
“The results have been released; the general performance is very good. Given the difficult time, to see our pupils performing like this is really wonderful, we thank God and the parents that really cooperated with us to get this kind of performance”

UNEB released the results today of the 2020 Primary Living Examination and a total of 749,761 candidates, 395,855 (53 per cent) females and 353,957 males (47 per cent) registered for PLE from 14,300 centres.

Rwabwogo is a businessman who has played behind the scene in most undertaking especially in media relations and politics.

Mr. Museveni further named former head of public service John Mitala as Presidential Advisor Public Service while former Minister of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister and outgoing Bushenyi District  Woman MP Mary Karooro Okurut  was named  Senior Presidential Advisor on Public Relations.

Ms Nakiwala Kiyingi, the former Minister of State for Gender has been appointed as Senior Presidential Advisor on Gender and Youth Affairs While Adonia Ayebare has been named Special Envoy  and Ambassador to the United Nations.

The name advisors join a long list of others that advise the president on a number of different subjects.

Sseninde assumes new position at NRM , vows to tackle youth issues

The National Resistance Movement Secretary General Richard Todwong has today Thursday welcomed the new Director Mobilisation, Cadre identification and placement,  Rosemary Sseninde, who officially assumed her office at the party headquarters on Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

Sseninde was appointed to the position last week and she replaces the late Mathias Kasamba who passed on in May.

At a ceremony attended by the NRM Deputy Secretary general Rose Namayanja Nsereko and the Deputy Treasurer Jacqueline Kyatuhaire, Sseninde was given an official car and shown her new office.

In her remarks, Sseninde said it was by the Grace of God that she is now the NRM Director of Mobilisation, “I thank the President who selected me to serve the NRM party in this capacity as Director of Mobilisation. Because the NRM is the party in government, this is an opportunity for me to serve the country. Together with my colleagues at the secretariat I will do all my best to serve,” she said.
She attributed the growing youth population in the country to the the achievements of the NRM among which she cited immunisation of children and putting in place a good healthcare system, something she says has decreased the infant mortality in the country.

“The NRM government has educated the children through UPE, USE and other tertiary institutions with this you find the number of youth coming from these institutions is high. And while the jobs available do not match the numbers of those graduating, we will work to addressing the grievances of the youth, she said, adding: “These are some of the issues we shall work together to ensure that we mobilize them and they come to appreciate the tireless efforts of the NRM party and also avail a conducive environment for them to create their own jobs.”

Sseninde, who is former Woman MP for Wakiso District, underscored that the opposition rides on the issues affecting the youth to downplay the numerous achievements of the government.

“We are aware and have tried to address some of these issues that affect the youth. I have been in Parliament for 20 years and and so I understand and appreciate most of the challenges the youth are facing and with this new responsibility, I will ensure that most of these challenges are addressed,” she said.

She stated that the party would address the issues that caused the dismal performance in Central Uganda.

“I am not going to do this alone because we are going to work as a team. There are issues for which we shall seek the President’s guidance on how to handle.”

She also stated that the losses in Central Uganda are not alarming. She said the FDC party have in the past created waves of change in some parts of the country but with proper planning, the party returned those areas to its fold.
