Uganda gets Shs5.8 billion grant from Japan to boost the country’s #Covid-19 response

H.E. Hidemoto Fukuzawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Uganda

The Government of Japan has extended Shs5.8 billion (US$1,640,442) emergency grant to Uganda to boost the country’s Covid-19 response.

The assistance channeled through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), will provide Uganda with cold chain equipment including medical equipment such as cold-storage facilities and transportation, as ‘Last One Mile Support’ to ensure vaccination in the country.

Uganda is among 31 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa that have benefited from a US$39 million Japanese Government emergency aid extended to countries suffering from the impact of Covid-19.

“Currently, ensuring equitable access globally including in developing countries and accelerating vaccination is the common challenge for the international community towards the goal of containing COVID-19. Japan has been contributing to formulating the COVAX Facility, an international mechanism for the procurement of vaccines, and has already made financial contribution of US$200 million,” said Hidemoto Fukuzawa, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Uganda.

Japan’s emergency aid grant this time around aims to deliver vaccines to each and every person in the all corners of developing countries, which will complement efforts of the COVAX Facility.

COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi – the Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO) – working in partnership with UNICEF as key implementing partner. UNICEF is handling the procurement and delivery of the vaccines and related supplies on behalf of the COVAX Facility.

“Based on our experience in helping to build medical supply networks that reach every corner of developing countries, Japan will continue to extend support to deploy vaccines to every person in the world with a view to containing COVID-19 as quickly as possible,” further said Fukuzawa.

The UNICEF Representative in Uganda, Dr. Munir Safieldin says the funds will be used to procure 106 solar direct drive vaccine refrigerators, 190 cold boxes, 2,200 vaccine carriers, 10 generators and support cold chain repairs and maintenance.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant consequences not only in Uganda but the world over. The children have not been spared either. UNICEF is supporting the Government of Uganda and working with different partners to make every effort to protect children, including through our efforts to build more resilient communities,” Munir said.

Munir expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for this timely assistance which will go along way to support the Government of Uganda COVID-19 vaccination efforts and ensure that all the vaccines received in the initial phase from the COVAX facility and Government of Uganda are fully used in time.

Kyambogo bosses ask gov’t to reopen Namboole for #Covid-19 positive students

Officials of Kyambogo University have appealed to the Government to reopen a #Covid-19 Management facility at Namboole National Stadium isolation of Corona virus positive students.

Addressing the media about the COVID-19 situation in Kyambogo University on Monday, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya said that the situation in the University is worrying because of the number of COVID-19 cases so far registered.

According to Vice Chancellor, Kyambogo has already registered 50 Corona Virus positive cases of Students and eight positive cases from staff and no one has died fortunately.

“So far, many students and staff have tested positive. In addition, many students have flue and cough and a number of them have refused to be tested, hence the situation may be worse than is reported,” says Vice Chancellor Katunguka.

Professor says for this reason, the Government should reopen Namboole specifically for managing these positive students and staff because the students who test positive have nowhere to go, so they keep on coming back in the university and others are infecting friends in hostels.

In the light of the fast-growing Covid-19 incidents, Ugandan health ministry transformed parts of Namboole National Stadium into an auxiliary hospital to cater for the rapidly increasing numbers last year 2020.

The facility began with a capacity of 1,500 beds, as health officials continued to track the COVID-19 situation in the country, later, the facility was closed.

Director of Health Services at Kyambogo medical center Grace Meregurwa, similarly says that the government should reopen Namboole National Stadium for the positive cases.  He adds that health ministry has taken over 800 samples which the university is yet to receive the results and they are worried that the cases from these samples might be many due to the existing flu and cough among students.

With the cases increasing rapidly, Kyambogo has put in place strict measures like reducing number of staff coming to the university, lecturing strictly going online and limiting the number of people accessing the university.

Caroline Ayebare, a student leader serving as minister of Health in 17th Guild leadership calls upon the student’s fraternity to adhere to Covid-19 SOPs to avoid the further worsening of the situation.

She says that no person is allowed to enter without masks and washing hands, but when students reach inside the university, they pocket the masks and cannot social distance themselves, which Ayebare says is dangerous to the community.

Last week, Kyambogo University announced that there will be no more physical lectures due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in the University. Professor Katunguka notes that they left with no other option apart from embracing Open Distance and electronic learning- ODeL policy.

“Before reopening the university, we had planned for blended learning involving both physical and online learning, however, due to the existence of COVID-19 at the university, we coincided with our earlier plan of going online,” adds Katunguka.

He further noted that unfortunately, some section of students is opposing ODeL, adding that that is why students led by the Guild President were striking last week saying that they wanted to study physically but the university shall not allow that.

According to Professor, the university has enough infrastructures and capacity to study online, adding that “I urge all Deans and Heads of Department to engage the students through ODeL as planned. I am glad that a number of faculties have already taken this move”.

On the issue of vaccination, he said that out of 1000 staff of Kyambogo, only 400 have already received the vaccination and calls upon the remaining 600 staff who are still refusing, to come up and go for vaccination. Kyambogo has over 30,000 students both at University and outside the University.

Over 2000 arrested for flouting #Covid-19 guidelines

Some of the people arrested by security operative in bars during curfew hours.

A total of 2124 people were arrested over the weekend for flouting the #Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures, Police has said.

Police intensified operations against members of the public violating Coronavirus SOPs as the country is in its second wave. During the course of last week, 1390 new cases were registered, within two days.

“In the course of the week 445 motor vehicles and 2,088 motorcycles were impounded for violating the curfew timings.  A total of 2124 suspects were also arrested for flouting the health SOPs and curfew timings. They are set to appear in court,” Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement.

The most affected were Kampala, Wakiso, Moroto, Tororo, Luwero, Kalungu, Mbarara, Kibuku and Iganga among others.

“Now we are experiencing a second wave of Coronavirus infection that is worse than the first. However, when issues of non-compliance due to behavioural fatigue, put our country as risk, there are enforcement measures in place to help protect the health and safety of Ugandans. As a result, we are now focusing our enforcement efforts on high risk settings to minimize the risk of the virus super spreading,” Enanga said.

The main areas of concern include public transport of buses, taxis, Boda-bodas, arcades, markets, schools, malls, restaurants, retail shops in trading centres, congregations at worships centres, weddings, bars operating illegally.

Enanga warned that all Territorial Commanders have become more punitive in the approach to #Covid-19 infractions. “We continue to punish offenders with fines, penalties and charges as one way of bringing the epidemic under control.”

“We urge all Ugandans and visitors that everyone has a role to play in stopping the spread of the virus.  Enforcement is only one component. We hope the vaccination exercise which has begun to pick-up, will play a big part in controlling the wave of this pandemic,” he said.

LOP warns Ssemujju Nganda for blaming his failure on NUP MPs

Mathias Mpuuga

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Mathias Mpuuga has warned Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju Nganda for blackmailing and blaming his failure on the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Over a week, Ssemujju has been furiously blaming NUP MPs for declining to vote for him in the just concluded Parliamentary speakership elections. The race was taken by Omoro County Legislator Jacob Oulanyah who polled 310 votes while former speaker Rebecca Kadaga got 197 votes as Ssemujju garnered 15 votes.

“I thought that the NRM would have one candidate. Unfortunately, two of them came. I thought the opposition would vote for me. I know NUP sat and agreed to vote Kadaga. They were opportunistic, now that has taught them a lesson. I want to congratulate the 15 MPs who voted for me,” Ssemujju said after elections at Kololo Independence ground.

And today, the newly elected LoP came out and taunted the Ssemujju and FDC saying that next time they should not do something they aren’t convinced about instead of doing it as a form of blackmail.

“FDC knows what happened and they are trying to go for the soft target which is NUP because I am sure they didn’t even get their own votes. They are trading intellectual dishonesty,” Mpuuga adding “As NUP, we aren’t looking for Patrons; we are looking for people who want to work with us. I want to set the record straight. The NUP leader didn’t order anyone to vote a particular candidate in the Speakership race, that’s propaganda,” he said.

Mpuuga said if the opposition is to face off with this regime, they have to swallow their ego, calm down and talk to each other.

He expressed his dismay over Political party leaders making patronizing statements about NUP people in Parliament being new and young, noting that there is no school teaching experience.

“I am not worried about the numbers in Parliament; I am worried about the quality of debate. My invitation is for Opposition MPs to rise and make superior debates, and then they will invite everyone to our side,” he said.

“We will guide them and I am sure, they will be up to the tasks. The duty is on Opposition MPs to filter what they bring on the floor of Parliament. We have to debate relevant topics so that we can challenge the forest to react for posterity,” he said.

World Environment Day: Uganda Breweries plant 75 hectares of trees in Nakaseke District

Uganda Breweries plant 75 hectares of trees in Nakaseke District

Uganda Breweries Limited Staff in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment and Tree Adoption Uganda (TAU), have planted 5000 trees in Nakaseke District.

The trees were planted in commemoration of World Environment Day.  The day is commemorated on June 5th every year. This activity is also part of the initiatives to support the Running out of Trees Campaign

In 2020, the Ministry of Water and Environment launched a National Tree Planting Campaign Running out of Trees (ROOT) to engage local stakeholders in both the public and private sector in making a contribution towards attaining national restoration goals. This year, the Ministry supported by Uganda Breweries Limited aims to plant over 40 Million trees. Uganda Breweries Limited, on top of this 5000-tree planting initiative has already contributed 330 Million shillings to this initiative which is the equivalent of growing and maintaining 2,200,000 Trees

Speaking at the Tree Planting activity, David Onyango, the Head of Communications and Sustainability, Uganda Breweries Limited emphasized the need to create good relations with our environment so as to fight the negative effects brought about by mismanagement of the ecosystem.

“Uganda’s catchment Areas are vital in providing livelihoods to millions of Ugandans through activities like fishing, trade and providing fresh water. It therefore has become a necessity for Uganda Breweries every couple of years to recommit to tree planting activities in these areas in order to continue to support communities that depend on the lake for their daily bread. We strongly believe that for effective environmental management, improving the livelihoods of people is the first step in the right direction to sustainable growth” he said

In 2018, Uganda Breweries Limited through its Water of Life initiative signed a partnership with the National Forestry Authority NFA and Rotary Uganda worth over 200 Million to jointly restore Gangu and Nawandigi Forest Reserves in Mpigi District and other forest reserves within the Lake Victoria water catchment areas.

As Uganda Breweries celebrates 75 years on 27th July 2021, the UBL’s top executives together with a team of over 30 staff from the E – Green Team planted 5,000 tree seedlings on 75 hectares with an aim of restoring forest cover within forest reserves in Lake Victoria Basin catchment area. This is part of the UBL’s spirit of progress which includes a 10-year action plan to help create a more sustainable world through making a contribution in preserving the natural resources. In 2018 the E-Green team received and planted at least one tree seedling at their home, which saw the business plant over 500 trees of several varieties in one weekend in and around the areas they live in.

Tree Adoption Uganda came on board the Running out of Trees Campaign this year to ease monitoring, maintenance, transparency and most importantly accountability of the project and to ensure that the planted trees mature to full capacity.

The Running out of Trees campaign is a 5- year initiative that will run until 2025. This will see a total of 200 million trees be planted across Uganda.

It is anchored around the private sector joining development partners in supplementing government efforts on the conservation and protection of mainly indigenous tree species that are being lost to different human activities, resulting in an estimated 15 million tons of carbon that would have adverse effects on our climate and well-being.
