President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late Gregory Karuretwa who contributed immensely to Uganda’s liberation struggle in the late 80s and early 90s.
The President took time off his busy schedule at the 27th AU summit in Kigali to pay his respects to the late Karuretwa who died in Kigali aged 77 years.
Karuretwa migrated to Uganda in the early 60s as a refugee and settled in Sembabule where he became a progressive farmer and successful businessman.
During the NRA liberation struggle, the late Karuretwa sacrificed a lot of funds, recruited combatants for the struggle and also contributed food essentials to the liberators.
He was awarded the Nalubaale Medal by President Yoweri Museveni for his contribution towards the political development of Uganda either through armed struggle or civilian disobedience or otherwise from colonial times to-date.
With the return of peace in Rwanda, Karuretwa returned to his homeland where he has been living with his family until his death.
The President described the late Karuretwa as a uniting factor for both Uganda and Rwanda and hailed him for his historical contribution to the liberation struggle.
