Stanbic Bank drags gov’t to Court over failure to refund money

Must read

Stanbic Bank has dragged government to High Court accusing it of having pocketed exhibits that initially belonged to it.

The money in question is Shs154 million and US $400 which police recovered from thugs that attacked the bank in 2007.

However, close to ten years later, the money has not been returned to the bank. Worse still, the case has stalled. The last time the suspects appeared in Court was in 2010 when they appeared before the general Court martial, a reason why Stanbic is demanding for the money that was recovered, which police has kept for a decade as exhibits.

According to the bank’s  lawyers of  Ssebalu, Lule and co advocates, the bank says on January  15, 2007 five persons attacked its IPS branch and robbed Shs592 million and US$ 6000 disappeared.

However, they were later arrested with Shs154million and US 400 USD in their possession. Police kept it as exhibit.

Stanbic is now demanding for the same with an interest. It claims that it has written several letters requesting for refund of their monies but in vain.
Now it wants court to compel government to refund its money with interest of 20 percent.

The Attorney General who is listed as the respondent in the case has been summoned to file defense within 15 days.
