Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) councilors have this morning warned Minister for Kampala, Betty Kamya against passing decisions without consulting the Council.
The warning was made during a crisis meeting convened by City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, where top on agenda of the urgent meeting was the eviction of traders from Park Yard market. They also resolved to visit the market to see what was taking place, and by press time the councilors led by Lukwago were moving towards the market.
The demolition of structures at Park Yard market started at 3am this morning when police sealed off the market and demolitions kicked off with traders’ merchandise still on the stalls.
On February 7, Kamya issued the directive through Council, giving the traders 30 days to vacate. However, the demolition has started ten days before the deadline.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Lukwago likened the move to land grabbing.
“This is just a matter of land grabbing, just like the commission of inquiry that has been set up to probe land matters in Uganda, Museveni and his government are all out to grab land,” the Lord Mayor said.
