Uganda shifts focus to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

The Uganda Cranes team successfully returned home on Sunday afternoon after qualifying for the CHAN 2018 tournament for the fourth successive time.

And now the focus has shifted to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, with interim coaches Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba today planning to announce the squad including the professional players to begin the preparations for the game against the Pharaohs of Egypt that is only 10 days away.

Uganda will host the first leg on Thursday, 31st August 2017 at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Egypt last faced Uganda in the second round of the group stage of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in a game that saw the Pharaohs claim a late 1-0 victory.

Mauritanian referee Ali Lemghaifry, 42, will officiate the first leg in Kampala. Lemghaifry was the centre referee when Uganda drew 1-1 with Mali in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations that took place in Gabon. Farouk Miya scored the Cranes’ goal.

The return leg which will be held at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium, Egypt and will be officiated at by South African Victor Gomes.

Egypt are looking to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990, and currently top the group on six points after claiming 2-1 and 2-0 victories over Congo and Ghana, respectively.

The Pharaohs are two points ahead of second-placed Uganda, who played a goalless draw with Ghana and defeated Congo 1-0.
