President Yoweri Museveni has banned police bond and court bail for criminals who kill people.
Museveni made the remarks on Thursday at Serena International Conference Centre during the Budget Speech. He directed Chief Justice Bart Katureebe who was amidst not to allow courts to allow granting bail to killers. He said it wasn’t a clash of institutions but rather an appeal.
“There is one thing am going to accept anymore. No way to police bond. Bail for killers is not acceptable,” he said. I don’t want a conflict between institutions. But I am here in two capacities-president of the country and leader of the resistance,” he said.
The president said his government will deal with criminals who have been killing Ugandans, leaving many angry and sad. “People are angry, sand and worried-. I am sad. I am angry but am confident we are going to defeat these pigs,” he said quoting Mathew 7:6, adding that his government has dealt with “pigs’ (criminals) before.
Museveni unexpected decision to ban police bond and court bail comes following the gruesome murder of Arua Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Abiriga who was buried on Monday.
Museveni has promised to address parliament on the security situation in the country next week.
