Excitement as Nakawa Market elects new leadership

Must read

Nakawa market community has elected new leaders amidst joy and jubilation by vendors. The market has been with leadership for a period of seven years instead of four years.

The Nakawa market vendors say, the market has suffered a number of setbacks because of these leaders who have stayed for long which made them relaxed in serving the interests of market people.

The three elected leaders include Sheikh George Kibirango and other two who will work as market coordinators and their representatives to KCCA.

A Few weeks ago, President Museveni directed KCCA to help Nakawa market come up with the leadership that will be able to solve the escalating challenges affecting the market.

Minister of Kampala Capital City Betty Amongin, who graced the event together with other KCCA officials, said that all the pending issues that have not been in the right order will be addressed by the new leadership of the market.

George Kibirango, one of the three coordinators says that the old leaderships had lost the meaning which has hugely affected the market. He pledged to work with all market vendors in order to bring back the glory of the market.

Kibirango says that the market has a lot of challenges which includes discrimination, high levying on market stalls, therefore, he appealed to the Nakawa market community to cooperate with the new cordinators and improve the welfare of the market vendors.

Each individual who operates in the market pays shillings 99000 for a stall and the minister Amongin said, this amount should not be increased because the situation in the country is not normal due to coronavirus disruptions.

For the people who operate from this market for only four hours like it has been previously, will continue paying shillings 1200 as a tax for a stall.

The new coordinators elected will start with registering all the market vendors and forward it to KCCA management, after, KCCA will sit with the registered members to see how they can plan further for the market.
