Government has asked all academic staff of Makerere University Business School-MUBS to call off the strike and resume work.
Addressing Journalists at Media center on Wednesday, the minister of public Service Wilson Muruli-Mukasa said that the strike by MUBS academic staff is unnecessary especially at such a time when the final year students are about to do their semester two exams and that such a time when the economy is disrupted by the corona virus pandemic.
The Nakawa based Makerere University Business School-MUBS academic staff is on strike over salary discrepancies which has left over 8,000 final year Students stranded. The academic staff says they have been earning much less compared to counterparts in other public universities.
According to minister Muruli-Mukasa, all the challenges that the MUBS academic staff presented, the government agreed to work on them and that a supplementary budget of shillings 4926,869,832 billion to cater for the salaries of the 843 staff appointed by the appointment authority of MUBS is being worked on.
Therefore, he says that the academic staff should be patient and wait for the government to work on their issues since the government is aware of it.
The Minister further noted that the government is committed to fulfilling its obligations and as in the process of identifying resources to a dress the pay disparities in all public universities in a comprehensive manner, adding that the government is open to further dialogue and engagement on the matter with the aggrieved staff.
Makerere University business school has been consistently focused on the service delivery to the extent that there is barely a record of engaging in industrial action to resolve staff grievances. The minister says that this is highly commended and an exemplary brand amongst the academic.
He further calls upon the chairperson of Makerere university business academic staff association to explain to his members the position of the government in solving their grievances and to request them to call off the pending industrial action.
According to the salary structure from the Ministry of Public Service, a Vice-Chancellor in a public university is entitled to a salary of 20 million Shillings, deputy vice-chancellor 17.4 million Shillings, Professor 15.6 million Shillings, an associate Professor 14.8 million Shillings, a senior lecturer 9 million Shillings, lecturer 8.1million Shillings, assistant lecturer 6.6 million Shillings and Teaching assistant 5.7million Shillings.
