Suspects behind killing of 6 lions transferred to CID

Lions

Suspects behind the grave killing of 6 lions have been transferred to Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID headquarters in Kibuli for court purposes.

The Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said, “We wish to inform the public that the 3 suspects, allegedly involved in the killing of 6 lions at the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kanungu district, on the 20.03.2021, have been transferred to the Directorate of CID, Kibuli, for further necessary court action.”

The suspects who include; Tumuhirwe Vincent, a 48-year-old peasant of Tukundane village, Ariho Robert, a 40-year-old male peasant of Kazinga lower village, Miryango David, a 68-year-old male, traditional healer of Tukundane village, will be arraigned before the Utility court of Buganda road, on various charges of unlawfully killing wild life species, unlawfully entry into wildlife protected areas and being in unlawful possession of wildlife pieces of three lion heads, 15 legs, jerry can containing suspected animal fats, which were all exhibited.

Other exhibits which were recovered include a tin of suspected poison, and spears. The dead lions and 9 other wild birds that died after eating the poisonous carcases were forensically examined by the veterinary experts from UWA.

The 3 suspects, who were thoroughly interrogated, admitted the killing of lions for body parts and fats, which are used for ritualistic cleansing. It was established that during their poaching exploits on March 20, 2021, they drove a herd of antelopes towards the pride of lions. After a successful catch by the lions, the suspects chased them away and laced the catch with poison, which the lions eventually ate and died. An additional 9 wild birds which ate the carcases too, also died.

“It is unfortunate that the suspects who had knowledge about the laws protecting wildlife in the area, still went ahead with their dangerous poaching exploits. This calls for increased awareness and sensitization about the safety of wildlife in the area,” Enanga said.

“We would like to greatly thank the offices of the RDC, the UPDF 25th Brigade, UWA, the territorial Police in Kigezi and Kanungu, DISO, and the residents who shared valuable intelligence. Our priority as the joint security agencies, still remains enforcement of wildlife protection laws in the country. The case in point clearly demonstrates our resolve in holding accountable all persons who endanger wildlife,” he added

Fifa hands former president Sepp Blatter additional ban of six years

Sepp Blatter

Fifa has banned former president Sepp Blatter from football until 2028 after giving him a new suspension of six years and eight months.

Former Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke has received a similar ban, with both also being fined £780,000.

The punishments were for “various violations” of Fifa’s code of ethics.

The new bans start when the current suspensions of 85-year-old Blatter and Valcke, 60, end in October 2021 and October 2025 respectively.

A Fifa statement said: “The investigations into Messrs Blatter and Valcke covered various charges, in particular concerning bonus payments in relation to Fifa competitions that were paid to top Fifa management officials, various amendments and extensions of employment contracts, as well as reimbursement by Fifa of private legal costs in the case of Mr Valcke.”

In its findings, world football’s investigatory chamber found Blatter accepted “an undue economic benefit” of 23m Swiss Francs (£18m) “split over the years 2010 to 2014, as a result of the conflict of interest created by the allocation and execution of extraordinary bonus payments between limited top-ranking Fifa officials”.

It also found that Blatter, Valcke, along with former Argentina football federation president Julio Grondona and ex-Fifa finance director Markus Kattner, had “set up a scheme through which they were allowing themselves to obtain extraordinary benefits with a minimum of effort”.

It added: “This vicious circle saw three of them (Blatter, Grondona and Valcke) signing the amendment contracts of the others and approving the respective extraordinary bonuses, while the fourth (Kattner) was in charge of implementing the payment of such bonuses (as well as of keeping the matter “off the books”, by not reflecting the bonuses in the Fifa financial statements and not reporting them to the Fifa auditors).”

Blatter was originally banned by Fifa for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches when he was found to have made a £1.3m “disloyal payment” to ex-Uefa boss Michel Platini.

His appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) was rejected in December 2016.

Speakership race: Kadaga stings Oulanyah as she launches her campaigns

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has scoffed at fellow National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs who claim that the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) is not backing her for another term.

Earlier this month, Kiboga district woman MP Ruth Nankabiwa was dragged into Kadaga-Oulanyah row on the floor of parliament after some members claimed that she was campaigning for the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanya.  Nankabirwa denied the claims saying she was just reminding MPs of the 2016 CEC resolution to the effect that Kadaga was to serve only ten years and pass on the baton to Oulanyah.

Speaking at the launch of her campaigns, Kadaga said; “There is this myth that the Central Executive Committee doesn’t like me, but am the Vice-chair of that Committee massively elected by the people of Uganda.”

“I represent the will of the people. Many times, I have had to stand between the state and population. For me, I am guided by the interests of the population,” she said in Munyonyo.

During the launch, she hit at her opponent and her deputy saying he is a coward. “There are liars in NRM who say I don’t like NRM, how was the situation during the age limit debate? I was in America when my Deputy called me and said there was something he couldn’t handle; I came, straight into fire as my Deputy ran away,” she said.

“I represent the will of the people. Many times, I have had to stand between the State and population. For me, I am guided by the interests of the population.”

The election of the Speaker is the first job of the new Parliament, after that, they will go for induction for three weeks.

“You our new ambassadors in the mission must maintain the tempo of the operations set by your predecessors to ensure continuity on the journey to peace in Somalia,” said Gen Muhoozi.

He reminded the troops to observe discipline, follow the Standard Operating Procedures of the mission, and ensure a healthy living by paying close attention to the preventive measures of all disease.

The Commandant of the PSO-TC, Brig Gen Bonny Wolimbwa said the battle group had received close to a year of pre-mission training and that it was in a good state to deploy in Somalia. He noted that the same battle group was the first to be trained by purely Ugandan instructors.

The Deputy Commander Land Forces, Maj Gen Sam Kavuma said:”The deploying troops have demonstrated high levels of military competencies and will therefore be reliable in contributing to the achievement of the Mission’s intended objectives,” he said.

UNBS releases list of certified maize milling companies

Maize

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has released a list of certified maize milling companies in Uganda.

The companies were certified as part of following an ongoing process to improve milling standards in the country following a ban on maize grain imports from Uganda to Kenya.

UNBS urged all maize flour dealers in Uganda to adhere to the quality standards and seek UNBS certification before delivering their products on the market.

The updated list has 23 companies, producing 27 brands of certified maize flour and maize grains.

This is in line with the UNBS mandate of consumer protection, aimed at protecting Ugandans from buying substandard maize flour which could be harmful to their health.

The standards body said it has received applications from over 50 maize flour dealers, who are in the process of certification and the list will be updated periodically.
