Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard will be retiring from active football at the end of the next Major League Soccer season.
The 35-year old midfielder who joined USA’s Los Angeles Galaxy in July this year made 710 appearances for the Red ‘Kops’ scoring 186 goals in the 17 years he was at Anfield.
“Next season could be my last season as an active footballer; I certainly don’t want to feel like I’m feeling right now” Gerrard was quoted after his side LA Galaxy was knocked out of the MLS play-offs by Seattle Sounders.
“I would love to retire after winning, it was a long season for us, and I was only present for the last four months; I wish I came earlier, but I will certainly be better and help my team win next season,” added Gerrard, who scored two goals in 14 appearances for La Galaxy after joining it halfway this season.
Gerrard, who played 114 games for the English national team before retiring after 2014 world cup says he, found some aspect of playing in US difficult.
“Playing on [artificial] turf, playing at high altitudes, playing in high humidity, those are the hurdles that I’ve had to face over the last three months that I wasn’t aware of them. Every away game has a different challenge,” Gerrard was quoted saying.
He is due to return to England where he will work as a TV pundit before heading back to Los Angeles for pre-season training in January.
