Rukungiri-Former Security Minister, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde has camped in Rukungiri ahead of district woman seat.
Rukungiri woman parliamentary seat fell vacant after appellant court judges led by former Deputy Chief Justice, Stephen Kavuma nullified the election of National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) candidate Winfred Matsiko over voter bribery following electoral petition that was filed by Forum for Democratic Change candidate (FDC) Betty Muzanira.
The Electoral Commission has earmarked May 31, as a polling date for by-election of Rukungiri woman Member of Parliament.
The by-election is pitting two parties, NRM and FDC and the campaigns have so far seen FDC’s kingpin Kizza Besigye who doubles as son of the soil and others campaign for their candidate on nomination day while NRM’s Jim Muhwezi who also doubles as the district NRM chairman plus Ministers Chris Baryamusi and David Bahati have all campaigned for NRM candidate.
Gen. Tukukunde who also hails from Buyanja Sub-County in the same district is conducting parish by parish campaigns. He was over the weekend and yesterday in Buyanja and Kebisoni sub counties. Yesterday Tumukunde converted FDC supporters in Rwentondo into Matsiko’s camp. He is currently in municipality.
Tukukunde is created with operational skills and his involvement in campaigns could easily give Matsiko an upper hand against her rival.
