Makerere Council approves 15 per cent fees increment

Must read

As students draw closer to the starting of the new semester, the vice chancellor for Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe says University Council has approved the 15 per cent fees increment that was recommended by students elect committee.

On July, 4, the committee led by Polly Bandora made recommendation after holding a number of consultation meetings from various stake holders and students at the university. Bandora contended that the 15 per cent increase will only be paid by new students for only one semester and the process will be examined in a period of five years.

In a social media post published by Prof Nawangwe, new Fees Structure for undergraduate students is effective from 2018/19 with an increase of 15 per cent.

“The increment will enable the University Management to enhance service delivery and undertake major improvements on university infrastructure for the good of our students and staff,” he wrote.

In reaction to the committee’s recommendation, Last week a group of students led by Lubega Pius a student’s leader from Mitchel hall, protested the move saying committee leaders were compromised and sold their trust to the University.

They floored all the recommendations saying they were not consulted about the move despite being leaders at the might university.

Just as it has been in the past, the reaction from students to the increment could be a strike against the increment.
