President Yoweri Museveni will today Thursday, February 4th, 2021, address the nation about the reopening of all schools, Covid-19 pandemic and security related issues.
On Monday, Cabinet Okayed the reopening of schools to non-candidate students. In March last year, Mr. Museveni ordered for closure of all schools. The move according to the fountain of honour peddled at curbing the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.
The schools will be allowed to reopen in a staggered manner that will ensure compliance with Covid-19 Standard operating procedure (SOP) of maintaining social distance, washing hands or sanitizing, and wearing of face masks.
Globally there 102, 942,98 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including 2,251,613 deaths, reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Uganda has 39651 confirmed cases and 325 deaths.
The Ministers decided that in order to finish up the academic year and ensure progression, all semi candidate classes, which include primary six, senior three and senior five should report back to school in the short term and study with the candidate classes.
Meanwhile, pre-primary schools will remain closed because the learners in this category cannot observe SOPs and are prone to respiratory infections. It added that because many of the pre-primary institutions are day-based, there is a lot of interaction between learners, and parents, teachers which would increase the risk of contracting the virus.
