The Finance Ministry has hosted a farewell luncheon to honor the retirement of Ishmael Mweru Magona, the outgoing Acting Director Budget. Magona’s retirement took effect on November 3, 2024, after reaching the mandatory retirement age.
State Minister for General Duties, Henry Musasizi, praised Magona’s dedication to public service, highlighting his expertise in government policymaking, budget reforms, and expenditure management.
“Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Magona demonstrated excellent knowledge and leadership skills, mentoring many staff members over the years.”
Magona’s contributions to Uganda’s economic reforms have been significant, particularly in driving the achievement of the ministry’s agenda on repurposing the budget.
He also played a key role in spearheading major reforms in planning, budgeting, and decentralization of frontline services.
In his remarks, Magona emphasized the importance of passion, mentorship, training, and teamwork in achieving success. He urged the ministry to continue building the capacity of its staff to ensure continued growth and development.
The farewell luncheon was attended by various dignitaries, including Hajj Yunus Kakande, the Secretary of the Office of the President, and representatives from the Budget Transparency Initiative Partners. Magona’s family, friends, and colleagues from the ministry were also in attendance.
Magona’s legacy in revolutionizing budget practices and contributions will continue to benefit not only the Finance Ministry but also the broader public sector. His retirement marks the end of an era, but his impact on Uganda’s economic development will be felt for years to come.
