Winnie calls for Museveni, Besigye dialogue on unity govt

Must read

Winnie Byanyima, wife to Col (rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer in the just-concluded elections, has called upon her husband and incumbent president Yoweri Museveni, to hold talks aimed at having a unity government in place.

‘I am for dialogue as well, cant Mr Museveni and Dr Besigye sit down and resolve this, I would like a government of unity,’ Ms Byanyima, an outspoken politician and rights crusader, wrote on her Twitter handle.

Ms Byanyima, the Executive Director of charity organisation Oxfam International, also called upon the two top contestants to also focus on dialogue, with a view to ‘giving people back their power’.

‘Dialogue can’t be about sharing power. It’s about giving people back their power,’ she added, in reference to the two political nemeses that have been at the epicenter of Ugandan politics for the last 20 years.

This time round Besigye, a four time challenger to president Museveni, is challenging Mr Museveni’s victory announced by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Saturday, February 20, a development that has caused concern among the population.

Meanwhile, since the announcement of election results, Dr Besigye has been under police surveillance, with his movements restricted, prompting diplomats from the international community accredited to Uganda including those from the European Union (EU) and the US to demand for his unconditional freedom.
