Unveiling the Shs3.3trillion wedding

Entertainment provided by Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and an £18,000 ($25,000)  designer wedding dress is far beyond the reach of most brides, but when the groom’s father is worth billions you can afford to splash out.

Billionaire’s son Said Gutseriev, 28, married 20-year-old student Khadija Uzhakhova in Moscow this weekend in a jaw-droppingly lavish affair, rumoured to have cost up to $1 billion.

Held at the luxury Moscow restaurant and banqueting venue Safisa, which was decked out in wall-to-wall fresh flowers, the wedding set a new bar for extravagance.

The young bride arrived in a beaded Elie Saab gown, whose wedding dresses range from £5,000-£18,000.

Her dress was imported from Paris and reportedly weighed 25lb (almost two stone) because of the huge train and heavy embellishment and the bride needed the assistance of several people to carry her train and help her walk upstairs

With a tight bodice, long sleeves and a full skirt cascading in folds to the floor, the gown was pure fairy tale – and came with a floor-length veil and bejewelled handbag to match.

Khadija’s look was completed with a diamond tiara and whopping diamond pendant around her neck.

Meanwhile, guests travelled to the grand nuptials in a fleet of luxury cars including Rolls Royces which were seen lined up outside the venue ahead of the ceremony.

The entertainment also did not come cheap, with Jennifer Lopez – who was reported to have been paid $1million for singing for Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the president of Turkemenistan in 2013 – jetting in to give the moneyed crowd in an energetic performance in a series of skimpy outfits.

But providing an unforgettable show was the least of J Lo’s worries as the singer apparently told guests that pronouncing the newlyweds’ names was ‘the hardest thing I had to do today’.

The singer, who performed her hits If You Had My Love, Dance Again and Get Right went through several outfit changes including a black tailored suit and a silver spangled leotard.

And she clearly received a generous pay cheque for the performance as the 46-year-old singer treated herself to some fancy accessories at Moscow store Aizel, which shut down for two hours to allow the star to shop in private, over the weekend.

Enrique Iglesias took to the stage to perform Bailando, casually dressed in jeans, a T shirt and baseball cap.

Sting also performed and was joined by a group of young girls and women for his song Desert Rose.

French singer Patricia Kaas serenaded the guests and the Georgian national folk dance ensemble Sukhishvili also made an appearance, despite artists from the region unofficially boycotting performances in Russia since the 2008 war.

Beyonce and Elton John also sang at the wedding according to Russian media reports, however this has yet to be confirmed and no photos have emerged.

The couple’s 600 guests dined on European cuisine and sushi and the wedding cake was a lavish eight tier creation, decorated with elaborate white icing and layers of pink floral garlands and topped with a star and crescent as a show of the couple’s Muslim faith.

But the extravagance of the occasion is surely fitting for the son of Kazakh-born Mikhail Gutseriev, a Muslim born in the Caucasus, who is thought to be worth $6.2 billion (£4.3billion).

The self-made man who now calls Russia home ensured he gave his public school-educated son a day to remember.

Said, who was born in 1988, was educated at Harrow and then the University of Oxford where he studied archaeology and geology.

He faced tragedy when his son Chingis – who also went to Harrow – died in a mysterious car accident in Moscow while driving his Ferrari.

It was reported that Russian papers tried to investigate but both the police and ambulance service then denied all knowledge of it.

Chingis was buried in Baku, Azerbaijan, where his family have links.

Said also completed a masters degree at the University of Plymouth, focusing on management of oil and gas industries, before returning to Russia to join the family business.

He’s also spoken of his desire to one day return to the UK to study for an MBA at London Business School, but for now is director of Russneft’s Orsk Refinery.

Little is known about the bride other than that she’s a first year student at the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry.

Fireworks were let off at the end of the evening to celebrate the happy couple’s union.

Ultimatum for Burundi troops over CAR sexual abuses

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric

Burundi has until the end of this week to report back on whether it will conduct an inquiry into the sex assault allegations against its UN peacekeepers in the Central African Republic.

The development follows reports that the United Nations had received new allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation against UN peacekeepers from Burundi and Morocco in the CAR, including one that involved a 14-year-old girl.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Burundian peacekeepers had been accused of raping the 14-year-old girl earlier this month, while a Moroccan soldier had been accused of engaging in an exploitative sexual relationship with a woman in February.

Dujarric said Burundi and Morocco had been notified of the allegations. Once notified, a state has 10 days to tell the United Nations if it intends to investigate the accusations. If it does not, the world body will conduct its own inquiry.

“The Moroccans so far have indicated that they will investigate,” Dujarric said.

There have been dozens of such accusations against peacekeepers in CAR, where the UN peacekeeping mission, the MINUSCA, assumed authority from African Union troops in September 2014.

And the United Nations pledged to crack down on allegations of abuse to avoid a repeat of past mistakes. The previous head of the UN mission in Central African Republic, Babacar Gaye, resigned last August and some 800 Congolese peacekeepers were repatriated last month.

The United Nations reported 99 allegations of sexual exploitation or sexual abuse involving UN staff members across the UN system last year, a sharp increase from the 80 allegations in 2014. The majority, 69, involved personnel in 10 peacekeeping missions.

The United Nations currently has 106,000 troops and police serving in 16 peacekeeping missions.

Allegations of sexual abuse have also been made against European troops deployed in Central African Republic. French troops have been in the country since December 2013, while European Union troops were there from April 2014 to March 2015.

In December, an independent review panel accused the United Nations and its agencies of grossly mishandling allegations of child sexual abuse by international peacekeepers in Central African Republic in 2013 and 2014.

Dujarric said on Monday the UN mission in Central African Republic had also received new allegations of sexual abuse by UN and non-UN forces and civilians in the Kemo prefecture that occurred in 2014 and 2015.

He said the mission would send a team to the area to gather information.

Come clean on attacks

Over the past two months there have been sporadic attacks on different security installations, notably on police posts and against security personnel in the areas of Rwenzori and Sipi region.

In the Rwenzori region raids in Kasese and Bundibugyo the attackers have displayed a high level of intransigence, at times taking on armed personnel with sticks and stones.

Consequently, differing versions have been given by the authorities about the Rwenzori attackers, with some even pointing to rebellion in the direction of the Bukonzo King Charles Wesley Mumbere and some of his subjects including Mbusa Nyamwisi, a prominent former minister in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), reportedly hell bent on the creation of the ‘sovereign’ state of ‘Nyiira’. Then there is another version ostensibly of tribal clashes involving the Bakonzo, Bamba and the Babwisi. Also, attackers have twice now raided police establishments in Kapchorwa and Kween districts in the Sipi region, but not much has come by the way of intelligence information as to who these people are and their motives.

It is important to note that this country has got layers of trained security and intelligence personnel reaching right down to the parish level. But even at the lowest level there is the LC 1 Chairman and the committee members, who act as the eyes and ears for the government at that level, making a very tight security net around the country.

Quite obviously then, all these people are supposed to play their part to ensure that the people of Uganda live in peace and harmony, and carry on their economic activities without fear of being attacked by indignant fellows aimed at causing instability.

That said however, the bigger point is that those responsible for the attacks must be positively identified basing on actionable intelligence, that is without emotional and sentimental feelings, so that innocent people do not get caught up in the saga as was the case in Luwero Triangle where thousands of innocent civilians died on mere suspicion of ‘supporting’ either the rebels or the government troops.

So, as the country tries to come to grips with the current situation, it is incumbent upon the security agencies and all of us as Ugandans to ensure that the country is stable and focused on development, devoid of instigated witchhunt.

Fellaini plays wrong position at United

Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has criticised Louis van Gaal for not playing much-maligned midfielder Marouane Fellaini in his natural position.

Fellaini is on international duty with Wilmots’ squad having endured sustained criticism of his performances and on-field conduct over recent weeks, notably from a significant section of United’s fan base.

But Wilmots believes the former Everton player is naturally a box-to-box midfielder, while he tends to feature at Old Trafford in either a holding role or as an emergency striker

“I know him by heart,” Wilmots told the Times. “In my eyes, he is a box-to-box [midfielder]. He could also play as a number six by himself, but not with a partner.

“He has the ability to play on the offensive too, as Everton used him. He is the best goal scorer I have.

“He is a very good player with a unique profile, but he is a player who must be used taking his qualities into account.”

Belgium play Portugal in Leiria on Tuesday – a match relocated from Brussels follow last week’s terror attacks – before Fellaini returns to United for Sunday’s match against Everton at Old Trafford.

We’re playing for Abel Dhaira tonight – Cranes

Afcon qualifier

Tonight at 7pm

Uganda vs Burkina Faso, Namboole stadium

Match Tickets: Shs20, 000 (Ordinary), Shs50,000 (VIP), Shs120,000 (VVIP)

In times of grief, bravery arises. This is exactly the mood in Cranes camp ahead of a crucial tie against Burkina Faso in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers.

This follows the death of ex-teammate Abel Dhaira who passed away on Sunday in Iceland due to abdominal cancer.

Longtime pal and teammate, striker Hamis ‘Diego’ Kiiza believes the only way to send off Dhaira is by winning the game on Tuesday.

“It’s a somber mood as you know,” he started. “We lost a brother, a friend, a teammate. This has however galvanized us ahead of game and we want to win it for him,” he added.

The Ugandan FA has already confirmed a minute of silence before kickoff at Namboole in remembrance of the fallen talented goalie.

Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic knows what is at stake and says that every one of the remaining three matches; two at home against Burkina Faso and Comoros and one away to Botswana will all be approached as if they were their last because whoever takes them will have done themselves a huge favour in the duo’s quest to qualify for Gabon.

“The game tomorrow (Tuesday) especially is like a cup final,” Micho said, “We shall squeeze from every player the remaining energy to see that we get the result we need.”

Yet the Serbian coach still has concerns about how his players will respond to the long trip from Ouagadougou. While Burkina Faso came by chartered flight a day before the Cranes arrival, the Ugandan team did not touch down at Entebbe Airport until the wee hours of Monday morning.

“It’s tough on us but we shall not be crybabies,” said Micho, his disgust at the situation hard to hide.

“I believe in the strong character of our players and work we are doing to be mentally strong, physically fit and technically-tactically effective.”

The Cranes had their final training session on Monday night under Namboole floodlights. All players left unscathed.

Micho is expected to make at least two changes from the team that started in Ouagadougou, with Khalid Aucho most likely to make way for Michael Azira, and Hamis Kiiza or Emmanuel Okwi coming in for Godfrey Walusimbi.

Scorer of the winner against Uganda on Saturday, Jonathan Pitroipa is again expected to be at the forefront for the Stallions, with Chelsea’s Bertrand Traore also raring to go.

  • Uganda probable XI:  Dennis Onyango, Denis Guma, Joseph Ochaya, Murushid Juuko, Isaac Isinde, Tony Mawejje, Michael Azira, Kizito Luwagga, Farouk Miya, Geoffrey Massa (C), Hamis Kiiza

OPINION: Why Prados continue killing Ugandans

Prado Toyota, a dangerous suv 4×4. Like I have always said. Is seated on a Hilux H frame Chasis hence very unstable at high speeds. The back fish tails on small multiple humps.
In car terms, it’s called a body on Chasis- no more than 8 bolts hold the body on the Chasis be warned.

This car originally was produced for Japanese families that lived in the snow hills & mountains meant to be driven at slow speeds up the mountains it became a good seller and intermediary between Hilux double cabin & Landcruiser 80 100 200 series commonly known as Mpenkoni the proper Landcruiser was too expensive and double cabin was a pick up & was not presentable in constituents, weddings and office to most Ugandans. As the constitution states, No government servants should have more than 3000cc and all cars should be diesel at that.

So the Prado made its way to best seller to organisations government and to most average families and high end because they sit high off the ground, the down side to all this no research is done by the buyers.
Over speeding by the owners & their relos all they do is walk in to a show room and as far as they are concerned, a 4×4 is here and I can go Mbarara the next day at 180kmp off they go, really?
Prado TX, TZ etc should not exceed 80 or 60kph on a marum or dirt road. The brake servos are also wanting….prefarably keep it as a city car.

Prado killed Ayume
Prado killed Nakato URA

Prado killed city businessman Crescent Baguma
Prado killed the Katama family.
Prado killed Miss Tourism Uganda
Prado killed the woman mp last week
Prado almost killed the Lira Woman MP.
Prado almost killed female artist Fina M
Prado last week almost killed MC Marcus Kwikiriza.
Almost lost NTV presenter G. Epenu.
Dr Hilderman & Mc King close call.
Prado killed 10 last week in Luwero.
A few years ago almost killed Winnie Byanyima

Prado has killed Pastor Kawesa and two missionaries.

VERDICT:
You are better off buying the older landcruiser vx or the new primo or pajero is a better car too rather than a brand new prado save a life save a nation this is just my opinion. Have you ever heard of a Q7 or ML accident if so 1 or 2.
Please stop buying prados!!!
Harrier is a much better car 100% I have tried & tested.

Car fanatic & critic.

Knives are out for aging Rooney

In the clamour to finish off Wayne Rooney, his crisp volley against France at Wembley last November has already been forgotten.

Rooney, after 109 caps and 51 goals for his country, deserves more respect than that. Much more.

Last September he scored from the spot in a 2-0 win against Switzerland to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s England record.

We have such short memories, we really do.

Injury robbed Rooney of another cap in the Olympiastadion, when a team with an average age of just 24 completed their memorable comeback against world champions Germany.

Instead, Rooney sat at home watching England on TV, tweeting once before the game to wish them “good luck” and again after they completed their stunning 3-2 win.

England head coach Roy Hodgson said: “Wayne, I repeat, is our captain. He has captained the team extremely well in these past two years.

“He has taken us through a qualifying campaign where we had complete success, with ten wins out of ten.

“It doesn’t please me too much when it is suggested that the moment he is injured and doesn’t play that he deserves to be jettisoned in some way.

“He certainly doesn’t deserve that. When he comes back and is fit again he is going to be putting enormous pressure on these players.”

Rooney will also know that the fight to get into that forward line at the Euros is certainly on after Harry Kane and substitute Jamie Vardy scored against Germany. Danny Welbeck, playing his first England game since the 4-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley in March 2015, also excelled in the first half.

Still to come, against Holland at Wembley tomorrow night, is Liverpool’s striker Daniel Sturridge.

Manchester City’s injured forward Raheem Sterling, one of Hodgson’s “five-yard furies”, is another favourite.

Throw Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into the pot, if fit, and it becomes a big problem for Hodgson. Theo Walcott, fading fast from the first-team picture at Arsenal, faces the prospect of missing out on yet another tournament.

He was ruthlessly culled by Fabio Capello in 2010 and missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil through injury.

Whatever happens, there will be at least one big-name casualty when England’s squad for the Euros is announced.

Still, it is too soon to suggest that Rooney, a player with genuine pedigree and experience, is no longer worthy of a place. The next logical step is to morph into Francesco Totti, to dip in and out of the national team when circumstances dictate.

Totti has done it with Roma and Italy, extending his career into a third decade by listening to the advice of those around him.

Rooney has the ear of England’s head coach and his contribution to the qualifying campaign has not been forgotten.

He was England’s top scorer with seven goals and has hit 11 in 14 games since the World Cup.

Rooney’s knee injury has kept him out of this squad but he is convinced that he will be fit to play in France.

Hodgson remains one of his biggest allies and it would take something truly remarkable to dislodge him from the final 23.

The Three Lions chief added: “I was busy enjoying the fact that Welbeck came back and did well, Vardy came on and did well and Kane was excellent throughout the game.

“I will enjoy that for a minute.

“I’m pretty sure when Wayne is fit again and comes back that we can assess the situation.

“I’m not going to spend any time thinking about anything else at the moment.”

A more pressing matter is with England’s keepers after Jack Butland was taken off on a stretcher with an ankle injury just before the break.

He was slow to react to Toni Kroos’ long-range effort, which put the Germans 1-0 up. But he appeared to be suffering after making a routine clearance with his left leg. With Joe Hart also sidelined, Fraser Forster is expected to start in goal against Danny Blind’s Dutch team tomorrow.

Hodgson added: “Our goalkeepers have work to do if they are to become as good as the De Geas and Lloris’ of this world.

“In an ideal world we will build that up as well.

“The few times we have to play the ball long, and it will happen towards Harry Kane, the better it will be.

“We want our midfielders to run the game.”

The prestige friendly against Holland will also give Hodgson the chance to run his eye over Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater.

With Jack Wilshere still sidelined through injury, an unexpected opportunity could open up for Drinkwater.

The midfielder was on the sidelines for the clash with Germany but he should get a chance to make an impact against Holland.

With time running short, it will need a performance we never forget.

Uganda among top investment destinations

With its economic growth outstripping that of most of its rivals and bucking a downward trend among emerging markets, Uganda is in pole position to pass its regional neighbors in the investment league tables this year. With up to Quarter 3, 2015 data on Nielson Africa’s second edition of the Africa Prospects Indicators (APi) now in, this year looks to be a milestone year for Uganda following its impressive performance.

According to the new report which provides a ranking of business prospects for leading markets in sub Saharan Africa, Uganda has been ranked 8th on the continent and third in East Africa.

Uganda comes is behind Ivory Coast, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Zambia, Cameroon and South Africa. EagleOnline understands that the country’s improved performance is partly due to the increased investments in oil and services sectors.

The report indicates that Uganda has had tremendous progress in retail execution, route to market and distribution, business insights and measurements among others.

“Uganda’s ranking improves on the business outlook dimension, and it continues to rank top in terms of retail sentiment,” part of the report says.

Sustained growth and development can only be realized with deep consumer and retail understanding, by 2015 35% of Ugandan retailers viewed the conditions that ease doing business as improving according to the report.

“From being largely unconnected to the web a little over a decade ago, millions of the consumers are now using it, due to the exponential advancements in mobile connectivity. 16% of consumers now access the internet using their mobile devices,” the report describes the rate of Uganda’s internet penetration.

growth

Uganda’s stronger investment attractiveness is best explained by its own sustained growth rates in the context of slower regional growth. Sub Saharan Africa (SAA) region growth prospects are likely to remain solid, as an urbanising and rising middle class drives demand for consumer products and improved services.

With Uganda’s economy registering slowed Foreign Direct Investment, weak Shilling, high interest rates and rise in commodity prices, the report offers some positive news.

“Inflation is one of the most realistic indicators of the conditions consumers face. On average, Food accounts for 30% of the Ugandan consumer’s basket,” it continues in part.

Media

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau and Kampala City Council Authority allow online business license applications. This has improved the procedure and also brought several businesses into the tax bracket. Additionally, business incorporation fees were reduced.

Uganda’s labour is also highly trainable, English speaking and the cost compares favourably in Africa with the country’s political and economic environment has been consistently improving and stable since 1986.
